This was my first Gaiman book and you've described exactly how I felt about this book. The prose and concept were fantastic, and are the things that make me want to continue reading his work, but it just wasn't executed in a way that was memorable or engaging for me. I had no idea it was written for TV, so a lot of the decisions and the episodic feel makes a lot more sense now. Can't wait for your next Year of Gaiman video!

Oh I love that dramatization, but I also don’t think you could follow it if you hadn’t read the book before
I like reading, but i struggle with getting hooked on a story. I've been reading the same author for 7 years because her writing style is easy for me despite not loving every story. I decided to start reading Neil Gaiman this year because I like his TV shows, and i gotta say his writing style, prose, ways of explaining everything hooked me from the beginning! It's sooo easy to read for me, so I'm finally having fun reading again despite not LOVING the stories I'm reading lol I saved this video for when i finished Neverwhere😁

I started with Neverwhere a couple years ago when I was getting into reading. I got about halfway and thought... "when am I supposed to care?" Dropped it and haven't gone back and entered a few months long reading slump. I will likely try the audiobook at some point.

This might not have been the most glowing review ever, but you still managed to get me in the mood for a re-read, lol. This was my first book by Gaiman and I was just so entranced, though the audiobook probably helped a TON with that. It's actually kinda weird how much I enjoyed this, because I tend to be a very character-driven reader and the MC here is honestly just very FINE. Yet... I couldn't stop listening to this story and just ended up having a lot of fun. I also tend to like those series akin to what Morgenstern writes, so maybe that's why I was okay with the weirdness here? I have no clue, but all I know is that I am happy that this book made me discover Gaiman's incredible storytelling and writing skills, I immediately fell in love!

This was such a great review! I just finished reading Neverwhere and it was a very difficult reading for me. I was sleepy most of the time, and like you, I could not connect with the characters or the story itself. London Bellow seems like a terrible place that no one would like to go or go back to (that ending, OMG), overall I just found all of it kind of a crazy trip (I felt something similar when I read Alice, but that story made more sense). At some point I thought Richard was really imagining or dreaming all of it - like he truly became a homeless or was in a coma, I don’t know - and that would’ve been cool, even if it was sad, but the book just left me with a feeling of a pointless journey. It is a shame, I really wanted to love this book. I adore Neil Gaiman and I agree with all your positive remarks about the book. Kudos to you for reading it 3 times! For me, once was enough! 😅

Richard reminds me a lot of Arthur Dent.
Also it does kinda sum up my views on Gaiman books I've read in general - beautiful writing. Interesting stories but I can get very bored, very quickly if I read for more than an hour at a time.

Haven't read this book in about 15 years, but I remember loving it. Mostly, as you said, for the prose.
I also saw the miniseries that was based on this book and loved it also. Highly recommended as, you're right, this is more meant to be a show.

Now I'm curious about Neil Gaiman's books. Thanks! Now about action in books. One good example I reckon of brilliant action narrative is in the Murderbot Series written by Martha Wells. I'm a big fan. I read the whole series and there were times I noticed I was even holding the breath in the more action packed moments.
Action can be done well in a book but I think it’s generally harder to make it engaging than it is on screen
2:18 - this is literally how prose fiction is supposed to work.
This is my second fav Gaiman after Graveyard Book, mostly due to the Marquis de Carabas

I'm willing to read more Gaiman but I've never been wowed by any of his books, including this one (I don't dislike or love any of them). Like he falls into average territory for me but maybe one of his novels will surprise me eventually. I did pick up The Ocean at the End of the Lane last summer and I'm expecting that one to be better than others I've read...we shall see. I think my problem with his stories is I never really find myself fully immersed in them.

My introduction to Gaiman's work was this book.... And I absolutely hated it. I swore I would never ever read anything by him again and I used to scowl every time I hear someone recommend his books.
But I finally decided to give him a 2nd chance and that is when I read the ocean at the end of the Lane.... And it's now one of the best books I've read. It felt like watching a Ghibli movie

I had been a fan of Gaiman's since the early 90s when I discovered The Sandman. This was a hotly anticipated book for me when it came out and I too was left feeling like it was just OK.
I was perplexed with many how critics at the time acted like this book legitimized Gaiman as a writer when The Sandman series was much more original and creative than this. I also found similar but inferior to Clive Barker’s Weavworld. It felt too short and kinda of shallow from what I was expecting from him. I was disappointed because I liked a lot of things in the book but it felt bare bones with a better book waiting to be teased out of it.
It's amazing how many people (critics especially) jumped on the Gaiman bandwagon the minute he shifted from comics to what they considered a respectable medium. I'm still kicking myself for waiting until "Ramadan" before giving 'Sandman' a try. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I'd waited until he started publishing novels.
Props for the 'Weaveworld' mention. Great book.
Sandman is definitely better than Neverwhere imo but he can be great at novel writing, this just wasn’t it

It's a novelization. More care was taken than you typically find in novelizations, but still.
I tried watching the miniseries, hoping the story would be better served in its intended medium. Nope. Still couldn't get into it, and the cheapo BBC production values made it physically painful to look at.
