Walking The Coleridge Way | 51 miles In The Footsteps Of Poetry

  • The Coleridge Way runs for 51 miles from Nether Stowey on the edge of the Quantock Hills AONB, to Lynmouth on the coast of Exmoor National Park. The route travels through a variety of landscapes: heathland, moorland, deciduous & coniferous woodland, farmland, deeply wooded valleys and historic villages with expansive views over the coast towards Wales. Plus there is an endless chain of villages offering fascinating historical architecture and archaeological sites.
Myself, Anna and Ann walked the trail in 3 days, wild camping along the way.

Great video Abbie, lovely views. I was intrigued by Wandsworth's house now owned by triratna Buddhist school as I am a triratna Buddhist!
Oh and Coleridge wrote rime of the ancient mariner, the only poem of his I know as I did a paper in it at school many years ago!

Recently found your videos and have been enjoying them. I first encountered Lynmouth on a school trip and have loved the area ever since. A neighbour of mine used to talk about the 1952 floods he was in the army and stationed close by he went to help during the night and the following few days. He was a lovely guy with plenty of stories to tell recently departed unfortunately. I’m looking forward to exploring more of your back catalogue 🙂.

Great video! Wonderful hike. I wonder if the seeds in the raspberries caused the stomach distress? Those can be hard on the gut sometimes. Glad it wasn't serious. I had a smile on for most of your film, watching you all have such fun and make so many small discoveries - the frog, the berries, the feather, the flowers. And just relax and appreciate the company. The perfect way to enjoy a group hike.

Back in the day this area was owned and managed by a well heeled individual and member of parliament (forgot his name) who, when his serfs/servants grew too old to work did not throw them out. They continued to live on his estate until the end of their days. To repay him they would adopt a path and maintain it, hence, Tom’s Path, Sparrow walk, Cabinet Walk and many others which retain their name to this day.

I’ve been wanting to do this trail like forever. Thank you, it looks amazing and I know Porlock really well and a couple of times I’ve walked up to Hurlstone point and around to Selworthy. Porlock is my happy place seeing this made me so happy, I’m so pleased you shared this. I’m determined to to the Coleridge way now. There were so many things I recognised, the church with the stag and the view across Porlock bay towards Bossington and even Webber’s post. So there’s more sculptures to see other than the apple core , it’s all amazing. What a joy to see you all as well. I’m so happy right now.

Great video, please keep a check on any tick bites for a target like mark around them. This can be a sign of Lyme Disease, it's treatable but you want to get tested if you're unsure. I was unlucky enough to catch it a few years ago and it's unpleasant, I'd hate for you ladies to get it.

With the horse when you said "that's so sad" I'm assuming you were talking about the fly mask, not the flies. Fly masks are very see-through for the horse and a God-send to keep flies off their eyes (where the flies feed on fluid drainage) and the ears. As you could see the horse was already suffering through some flies...would have been so miserable without the mask.

Great video as always Abbie. Walked this back in 2015 in 4 days. Stayed in Monksilver, Wheddon Cross and Porlock. Found the first day a bit weird as you circle round the Quantocks rather than up Holford Combe and over the top to Bicknoller and like you diverted over Dunkery but the last bit from Porlock was just gorgeous.

Well done, Triple A!! I've just started this walk with a friend (also called Anna); we're doing it in 10-12 mile day walks.
I've also questioned why the route arcs around the Quantocks, beneath the hills and I believe it does the same around Dunkery Beacon. I guess the obvious answer is that Coleridge wasn't a fan of hills!! ;-)
All the best, Abbie and look forward to seeing more videos from you in time.
