LOL I have told them 1,000 times that not all songs need to be broken down. Some, if not most, are just music that needed words so a line of lyrics that rhyme are thrown in and it still makes a song that last a million years.

      Awesome tune!
There’s a bunch of these that really deserve to be “required reacts” that really helped shape the whole rock n’ roll dancehall aspect where the goal was more about dancing and having fun together at the party instead of making any kind of heavy statement or anything,
      just FUN.

.......it's a song about a monster called the Wooly Bully. It's described in the lyrics as having two big horns and a wooly jaw. When this song came out in the mid-60's there were numerous rock songs with humorous sci-fi and horror themes in the lyrics. At the time this song came out there were other songs with titles like "The Flying Purple People Eater" and the classic "The Monster Mash". They all make a great Halloween playlist !!!

This sounds like an accurate remake by the original group, the original record was a little better. And you heard one of the greatest screams in rock and roll history lol. I was a #1 in 1965. Young people didn't care about what it was about, it was just weird and fun, to dance to and yell/sing: "Wooly Bulllyyyyy!" and that sax solo was real fun also.

Funnily enough, “L-7” is a slang term for a slang term. It’s an alternative way of saying “square”, which is a way to describe someone dull.
This meaning of “square” arose in the 1940s around the jazz scene, and would indicate that someone’s tastes were old-fashioned and out of date, as opposed to someone who was “hip” or “hep”- whose finger was on the pulse, aware of all the latest trends.

    • @craigplatel813

That's it. It was fun to dance to and nobody understood most of the words. It didn't matter, it was just fun. btw, Mr Hollands Opus is a great movie about music from the 60's all the way to the 90"s. 😂 More crazy, fun music recorded in Memphis, although Sam was born in Texas. I think. He got a lot of airplay in Memphis with the Pharaohs (politically incorrect now). “Little Red Riding Hood” got more play, but there were also songs like “Oh, That’s Good. No, That’s Bad.” Sam later went on to play with some other artists, including country singer Freddy Fender.

Try to listen to a song without thinking about its meaning. That's what everyone did in 1965. And, long before and after. Could you dance to it? That's all that mattered. It was a favorite song, but I didn't know the lyrics until your video. If we wanted to sing along, we made up what we thought the lyrics might be, often to amusing effect, and often different from what our friends thought. There was nowhere for us to go to find lyrics. Maybe a musical store that sold sheet music.

Just a fun song, no analysis needed.... This was the song that was #1 when I arrived at JFK from Germany in 1965

This is not a song to over-analyze, folks. There is no way to explain this other than '60s cool. I know. I was there.

Millenials may not like it: 1965 single sold 2M records, pre-internet. 1st Chicanos to make what public felt was a #1 hit. On Tik Tok 59 years later. Pure art.

Nooooo . . . this was before the drug scene. It was pure fun. Sam the Sham, Tex-Mex ancestry. I always thought of the Wooly Bully as a buffalo, but it was really just a dance tune. I hope you two will react to his "Little Red Riding Hood!"

In the sixties there many hits from "novelty" bands like this. Monster Mash, They're Coming To Take Me Away, Snoopy vs The Red Baron, etc.

Some things are above (or beneath!) analysis...
It's just the music folks! Either groove with it, or dismiss it, but ANALYZE it??? Good luck.

L7 is slang for someone who doesn't take chances and is too serious (A square) This song is about dancing and letting go - Thats about it. (make an L shape with your thumb and index finger on one hand, and a 7 shape with your thumb and index finger on the other hand. Then join them to make a square shape. Every generation has slang and signs.

I always put the Wooly Bully in a category like the One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater. I guess you had to be there. As for "Let's not be L 7", L7 is a square. Being a square was the opposite of being hip or cool.

LOL...I always picture that ram sheep or billy goat at a farm, who takes advantage of their horns when someone bends over and doesn't see it coming....the Wooly Bully!

But according to the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, Sam corrected the record, and said: “People make up all kinds of stories when they don’t have the right answers. There was a saying around here - when anybody did good - it’s like, ‘Wooly Bully for you,’ like ‘big deal.”
Hatty invites Matty to dance, saying “Let’s not be L-seven,” which meant not to be square, the opposite of cool.
It became a monster hit. It went straight to number two on the charts. Billboard named it their “Number One Record of the Year,” and it became the first American hit to sell a million copies during the era of the British Invasion.
“We kicked The Beatles’ butt!,” said Sam.
