  • This video covers affordable non power tools I recommend to get you started in metal work. These tools aren’t the nicest money can buy but they definitely will help you in fabrication of metal projects. You would be surprised just how much you can do with a few simple metal working tools. Once you get your metal working tools established you can always buy better tools that fit your needs as you grow in your ability to fabricate, there’s a lot of tools and brands available, this video was mainly to point out a simple arrange of tools that won’t break the bank to buy.

    Just be careful with magnetic clamps. Two things. If you use an angle grinder, you’ll find those particles everywhere. Guess what picks them up like a magnet? Yup! So if you use them to keep things at 90 degrees, they won’t, because of the particles. So keep them clean, and away from where you grind. The other thing is to keep them at least 6 inches away from your weld, especially if you’re welding in DC. The arc will flare towards the magnet.
    Guys, Mike knows what he’s talking about. Take his advice. Check out his projects.

    Great tips. I think cheap autodarkening hoods are OK because they all block the UV and IR even in "light" mode. So if they don't auto darken you get dazzled but no harm done. I think most clear polycarbonate safety glasses block UV anyway but some have a proper certification. I recommend getting those and just leaving them on all the time even under the welding hood. That way you never have to remember to put them on and you'll be all right even if you really get flashed (because you forgot to actually put the hood down).

    Breathing protection is the most important and first thing any welder/fabricator should buy. Dont cheap out. If its not comfortable to wear you will skip doing so.
    Im old enough to have worked long before breathing protection was common/required. I am paying the price in my old age.

    I am a greenhorn when it comes to metal fabrication. I am retired and found a real old truck on the ranch where I get hay for our horses. It had a tree fall on the back of the cab that caved it in. The owner is considering letting me have it as I want to turn it into some yard art on my ranch. I dont want to restore it but I will need to bang out or repair the truck cab. I will need some cheap metal fab tools and your videos have been very useful. @@Mikefestiva Yep, just placed an order for 2 of the HFS 3" clamps through Amazon - gotta love tax refund season... I could have used these last week on my neighbors dump trailer project. I have a pair of 6" x 1/2" angle iron scraps I've used for a few years for squaring and clamping weld projects that work fine but much less convenient and time consuming on the setup. Also limits access to tack the inside corner. Although we'd all love a set of Fireball squares, my budget is more along the lines of the HFS clamps. Really appreciate you testing these reasonably priced tools and and sharing with the rest of us Mike!

    I have a few ideas for your next video on must have tools. Ball pene hammer, handles hitting hardened tools like punches and chisels. Letter and number drill sets. Required for proper clearances for taps and pins. Pin punch sets, transfer punches, hardens straight edges 18" to 24". Toolmakers vice, 4" is better. Rubber pad for setting finished parts on. Hand scribe and both the fixed 3 sided scraper and a rotary debut tool that tacked replacement blades.
    Best thing to do is try to make anything. Then buy only what you need. Best place to look is McMaster Carr or Granger. They carry true machinist and machine builder tools and fasteners.

    Hey, Mike.
    I use calipers a lot for machining. I started with the Empire set from home Depot that were like $25, and they work okay, but quickly moved up to Mitutoyo Digimatic calipers.
    For welding & fabrication, it's much easier on the wallet to buy one or two cheap sets of the stainless vernier calipers online that just have the markings on them. I find them for $12-ish on eBay often, and they're plenty accurate enough for metalwork. You also don't have to worry about batteries, or the screen getting messed up. The only thing is learning to read a vernier scale, but once you can do that, you can read a micrometer to .0001".
    If you're not well versed in vernier and want a way to read metal thickness easily, a metal thickness gauge on a keyring from Miller is only $6 or so on Amazon and shows the most common metal thicknesses.
    Another great video, Mike. Keep at it!👍

    Lincoln makes a nice entry level hood. Same or less $ than the HF top of the line. In general HF welding consumables and wearables cost more than the LWS. Support your Local Welding Shop! LWS also has a good middle weight glove for MIG; not as thick as the cheap MIG/STICK gloves but still insulated to 900f. Those and a single layer TIG pair for TIGing covers ya.

    Mike, can you give me an idea of what's the best route to go for gas bottles. What size bottle works the best for TIG? What about MIG? What about OFW/OFC? Should I lease or buy my own tanks?

    • @radishfever
      @radishfever 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy full cylinders of welding gas from Amazon. No matter which route you go it costs money up front. Even if you rent the shops around here want the full value of the empty tank for a deposit. Was about half the cost just to buy from Amazon. The 125 cf bottles are nice because they are 45 cf bigger than a 80 cf tank but when you get a refill the 125 cf tank only costs a few more dollars extra. More gas for slightly less and fewer trips to refill.

    • @heyyou5189

      Check with your local gas supplier. My region I cant find any supplier that will fill a customer owned tank.
      Also tanks need to be recertified periodically.
      My local tank tester will not test a privately owned tank.

      1rustytree I hear you on the weather, we finally got a week of sun out here and plants are starting to bud, so I’m trying to get the garden in order and that required swapping the old engine on my Troy built tiller, it’s feeling nice to finally get the sun back out in the Northwest!

      Hey Tom I just was out the other day ripping around on that bike, I have had all the parts sitting on the shelf and I really need to install all of them. I just got two weeks off of work because of the virus stuff going on and the shop I work at is not essential work, so I’m definitely going to get time here next week to install it!!! 👍

    What is a good gasless welder for messing around in a garage without 220? I need to do some fabrication on my 05 Kawasaki prairie 360 and my 68 Harley Davidson golf cart...

    • @davidmcduffie1398
      @davidmcduffie1398 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can get a wire feed welder that runs on 110 volts or 220 volts on the same machine depending on which cord adapter you use and start off with flux cored wire for welding. Then when you can afford to get a gas bottle just change to mig wire for mig welding. When you can afford to upgrade your electrical system to 220 volts ( already capable on your welder your set ). I hoped this helped.

      I personally have a Hobart 110V running flux core wire. Wish I had bought the 220/110 version. Last summer I bought the largest full bottle (that Americans an own) of 75/25 new for about $160 for another machine I inherited. Refills will be much less. If you watch Mike F. he's using a green Harbor Freight unit. Many others have done videos on the green machines as well. I suggest getting the biggest unit you can afford as you will be amazed how easy it is to "find" things that need fixing. Have fun!!!

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Michael if you are on a budget the little flux core Titanium 125 sold by harbor freight is about the best bang for your buck, it goes on sale for $150 often. If you have a little more money to spend I would say the Titanium 170 or 200, both are 120/240 volt welders both can run flux core wire but you have the option if you buy a gas bottle you can run shielding gas and your welds come out really clean and nice, the 170 is just a MIG ( wire feed) the 200 like I own is MIG, TIG and stick. Both 179 and 200 can run a optional spool gun to weld aluminum too.
      I hope this info helps 🙂

    • @mykee426
      @mykee426 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mikefestiva thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I havent learned how to TIG yet but I can MIG weld all day cuz its easy. I can somewhat stick weld but not the greatest. But I'll check them out and see which is best for my dollar as of now.

      I really like my Titanium 200 It’s my main welder for my home shop, I don’t run the flux 125 much because I usually use the 200, so my friend has the 125 for now so he can weld up some projects at his place. We have a flux 125 at my work and we use it often on small jobs when you don’t feel like packing a bigger welder and bottle around for a quick repair.
      I also have the Titanium plasma 45 and I have cut over 350 feet of metal with it on my CNC table and it’s been really solid so far 👍
      I’m not sure if you have seen my articulating dump truck build yet? I’m running the plasma 45 and the Titanium 200 on this project th-cam.com/video/MdbNO4S26jk/w-d-xo.html
