Elvis's only Grammy was in *Gospel* award. He was the most at home when he sang gospel. It's in his blood from his younger days and never left. Elvis will *never* be replaced in music. I agree about those schaltzy movies that were made for him to be the star are just goofy. Although he really nailed the songs. He's in FOUR Halls of Fame: Rock & Roll, Country, Gospel, and Rockabilly.

Let me say this, I have really been enjoying your Bill Burr reactions man. I'm an older white dude who served with some great black men in the Marines many years ago. I grew up poor, and yes a "Welfare Kid" as well at times, but realized long ago that, although there may be some cultural differences, we all really do have many of the same struggles and issues. Just through different lenses. It makes me very happy lately watching reaction videos on TH-cam from various black men and women and they are watching either white comedians or music artists, or whatever. When we all act similar to you sir, we can all cross the stupidity boundaries of race. Yes, we all have some shit that we can poke fun about between races, but when you do that out of love and respect, it's all good. You my kind sir, I consider my brother. Keep going man!
Elvis did more for his community and for the lower income community then anyone ever. He didn't see color. He actually refused to do a concert if the sweet inspirations girls were not going to be treated as stars. Whitney Houston's mother was one of those girls. He was once at a Cadillac car lot and notice an older black woman admiring a car. He asked her if she liked that car and she replied oh yes it is very nice. He said would you like that car and she told him she couldn't afford the car. He turned to the salesman and told him to get the keys for the car and give her any frills on it that she would like. He was super generous to everyone he came in contact with. You would be missing a great thing if you don't look at all the videos and interviews about him. Your kids should watch with you and see how great that man was. And yes he died in the bathroom but to understand the whole deal you would have to watch the Celebrity autopsy show that features what happen to him.
@@panrick he was very much a part of that culture growing up in Mississippi. He just never forgot it and gave back all he could. And he is not the only one who benefits from others. I have recently been learning more than I ever knew about him through the ones that knew him best like JD Sumner. His great joy was to give to those who needed it. And it was not through organizations. He actually went to the people and gave what ever they needed.

Elvis actually gave credit to the black people that inspired his music and denied the title King of Rock and Roll. Problem is how he was presented by his team and the media.
Another thing about Elvis is that he was a gentleman. That is to say that he never talked trash about ANYONE in the press or interviews. When asked how he felt about a political point of view Elvis just smiled and said; "I'm just an entertainer. I don't want to get involved with that stuff." He did have his minor girlfriend Pricilla who he'd met while stationed in Germany live with him with her parents permission, but they did not get married until she was of age. Elvis' mother and father also lived with him during that time.
The only thing we really need to remember about Elvis is how great his music was and still is, and that he was, by all accounts of those who knew him and knew of him, a generous, kind and completely color-blind man.

Jeff Brown He paid for Jackie Wilson’s hospital bill. He paid for Roy Hamilton’s funeral and sent flowers to his wife until the day he died. He introduced Fats Domino as one of his inspirations during a Vegas performance. There are so many other examples in his life and his generosity towards all people of all colors.
I’m a huge Elvis. I’m also a huge Bill Burr and Mia fan. I listen to their podcast cast etc. that being said, the first time I saw this routine, I have to admit I got a little bent out of shape. There was nothing fake about Elvis. He brought the music the only way he knew how, and it was Encouraged by Sam Phillips, "old guy Bill Burr was referring too. Elvis didn't invent a new thing though he was just mirroring the Jump Blues, Boogie Woogie, Blues, Jubilee music that he grew up with and loved. Philips had several black acts that he was recording on his label, and was having a hard time getting them to cross over into the main stream so he was looking for somebody like Elvis to help to usher it in. Elvis was at the right place at the right time, like lightning strike, but would never call it appropriation, at least on Elvis part, Elvis covered songs he liked and always gave respect back to the artist, like Crudup & that's alright mama.
He hated the king label, and in fact pointed to Fats Domino as the true king of rock and roll. Also, he gave props all through his career to those black artists he revered. He could never have done what he did without a true reverence for the source material.
I never did understand this whole race appropriation thing. Every race and culture has amazing things. If someone sees something they like and they use it or enjoy it then that is a good thing. I mean america loves tacos and you don't see hispanic people whining about racial appropriation. Many black women straighten their hair and you don't see white people whining about racial appropriation. We eat rice by the metric tons here in America and you don't see asians whining about racial appropriation. They say the greatest form of flattery is to copy someone. Why can't we just get along as a people and enjoy things from all cultures and races. The more the merrier.
In the case of early Rock & Roll it was because many white radio stations wouldn't play black music. So, those black artists didn't make as much money as they could have. However, the industry could take a song like "Tutti Fruti" by Little Richard, give it to a white artist like Pat Boone, and Boone would make a ton of cash that Little Richard wasn't allowed to. That's why Little Richard and others complained about appropriation. It wasn't just culture being appropriated, it was income.

Initial cause was reported as heart failure. Later autopsy results discovered an excess of uppers & downers in his system. I love watching young people react to music from my day. I have really loved watching young black folks react to Elvis. Many of them have watched a documentary called Elvis and the Black Community. You probably know that Elvis grew up in a black neighborhood during segregation. I encourage you to watch that documentary.The best one is Baz Lurhman interviews Sam Bell. If I recall, Elvis was once accused of saying The only thing Negroes can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes." He denied it, and in an Interview with Louie Robinson for the African American magazine 'Jet" is quote as saying "I never said anything like that, and people who know me know that I wouldn't have said it. ... A lot of people seem to think I started this business. But rock 'n' roll was here a long time before I came along. Nobody can sing that kind of music like colored people. Let's face it: I can't sing like Fats Domino can. I know that." If your looking to mix things up in your music reactions, the early years of Rock N' Roll are all must listen for fans of both modern Rock and Metal as well as Pop, since that's where all of it starts. Guys like Pressley, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and many more. Pain in the ass to find some of their music though.

Elvis was talented beyond, nobody had ever heard a voice like Elvis. In short, Parker constantly overbooked Elvis to the point that Elvis couldn’t sleep or wake up. So, Parker hires a doctor out of Vegas. The “Doc” keeps Elvis on downers and uppers, telling him, their prescription...its okay. As a huge star, Elvis was drafted by the Army, he refused to let his stardom nor being the only male child get him out of the draft. While serving our Country, he meet his wife, she was 16 yrs old in the fifty (consider the times) he did not marry her until later. Then Parker booked him to star in bad movie which Elvis hated. Secretly, Parker was spending, gambling all of Elvis’ money away. Elvis was trusting and very loyal. The constant touring (you have to witness him live) the movies and all took a toll on his body. The drug addition caused many problems, especially his stomach. He did die in his bathroom but, his girlfriend was in the house. Check his live performances out...HE GAVE US ALL HE HAD!

He not only gave full credit to black blues artists whose genre of music gave birth to Rock N Roll but not only did white songwriters like Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller write some of those blues songs sung by black artists before Elvis but who do you think invented all the instruments used in Jazz, Blues, Rock N Roll, Pop, etc.? It had nothing to do with bluegrass vs. blues. Elvis' first single was a bluegrass tune and the other side was a blues tune. It was really Elvis and his two sidemen, Bill Black and Scotty Moore, who decided about the music. Elvis certainly did respect his sources in black culture. The first place that integration took place was in the army. The second place was in rock and roll. I'm from Tennessee and Elvis is almost a religion, but he was flawed. However, what always impressed me about him was his generosity. He would see a poor person looking in the window at a Cadillac and he would remember what that was like and just buy that person a new car. I thought that was really beautiful.

my grandfather died sitting on the toilet. he'd finished his dinner and felt some chest pain and went to the bahroom to get his nitroglycerin pills and grandma found him a few minutes later sitting on the toilet. now his pants werent down or anything, not sure about elvis, but he died in the bathroom.
Elvis actually died from an impacted bowel, confirmed in autopsy. He was taking prescribed uppers for shows and downers to sleep, but they had very little to do with his death. He was alone in the bathroom when he passed away, but there were people in the house. Also, he only got chubby the last couple years of his life. One thing that drives me nuts is when people say Elvis stole the black man's music. He grew up in the poorest part of Tupelo, where soul music and bluegrass was prevalent. He then instructed the Salesperson to go out and ask if that lady would not come into the car dealership to meet with him. When she came into the Store, Elvis told her to pick out a car of her choice. Elvis was as down to earth as anyone could expect, and given his celebrity status was a very well liked individual among his peers. His back up singers have nothing but praise for his attentiveness to always being considerate to their needs. He stole nothing, and his only excuse might be that he was just another kid who grew up in a very poor area that included many influences that helped him to grow as an entertainer. You will know by the fruit the tree produces, its either sweet or it is not. Elvis was the real deal.

Let me say this, I have really been enjoying your Bill Burr reactions man. I'm an older white dude who served with some great black men in the Marines many years ago. I grew up poor, and yes a "Welfare Kid" as well at times, but realized long ago that, although there may be some cultural differences, we all really do have many of the same struggles and issues. Just through different lenses. It makes me very happy lately watching reaction videos on TH-cam from various black men and women and they are watching either white comedians or music artists, or whatever. Elvis did more for his community and for the lower income community then anyone ever. He didn't see color. He actually refused to do a concert if the sweet inspirations girls were not going to be treated as stars. Whitney Houston's mother was one of those girls. He was once at a Cadillac car lot and notice an older black woman admiring a car. He asked her if she liked that car and she replied oh yes it is very nice. He said would you like that car and she told him she couldn't afford the car. He turned to the salesman and told him to get the keys for the car and give her any frills on it that she would like. He was super generous to everyone he came in contact with. You would be missing a great thing if you don't look at all the videos and interviews about him. Your kids should watch with you and see how great that man was. And yes he died in the bathroom but to understand the whole deal you would have to watch the Celebrity autopsy show that features what happen to him.

I have recently been learning more than I ever knew about him through the ones that knew him best like JD Sumner. His great joy was to give to those who needed it. Another thing about Elvis is that he was a gentleman. That is to say that he never talked trash about ANYONE in the press or interviews. When asked how he felt about a political point of view Elvis just smiled and said; "I'm just an entertainer. I don't want to get involved with that stuff." He did have his minor girlfriend Pricilla who he'd met while stationed in Germany live with him with her parents permission, but they did not get married until she was of age. Elvis' mother and father also lived with him during that time.
The only thing we really need to remember about Elvis is how great his music was and still is, and that he was, by all accounts of those who knew him and knew of him, a generous, kind and completely color-blind man.

There was nothing fake about Elvis. He brought the music the only way he knew how, and it was Encouraged by Sam Phillips, "old guy Bill Burr was referring too. Elvis didn't invent a new thing though he was just mirroring the Jump Blues, Boogie Woogie, Blues, Jubilee music that he grew up with and loved. Philips had several black acts that he was recording on his label, and was having a hard time getting them to cross over into the main stream so he was looking for somebody like Elvis to help to usher it in. In the case of early Rock & Roll it was because many white radio stations wouldn't play black music. So, those black artists didn't make as much money as they could have. However, the industry could take a song like "Tutti Fruti" by Little Richard, give it to a white artist like Pat Boone, and Boone would make a ton of cash that Little Richard wasn't allowed to. That's why Little Richard and others complained about appropriation. It wasn't just culture being appropriated, it was income.

Bill Burr is an Elvis fan? You wouldn't know it by this video. The guy who discovered Elvis wanted to discover a white singer who sounded black. That was Elvis. It had nothing to do with bluegrass vs. blues. Elvis' first single was a bluegrass tune and the other side was a blues tune. It was really Elvis and his two sidemen, Bill Black and Scotty Moore, who decided about the music. Elvis certainly did respect his sources in black culture. The first place that integration took place was in the army. The second place was in rock and roll. And if we are going to talk about cultural appropriation then all those black folk are gonna have to stop playing basketball (invented by some white cat in Springfield, MA with a lot of peach baskets).

I'm from Tennessee and Elvis is almost a religion, but he was flawed. However, what always impressed me about him was his generosity. He would see a poor person looking in the window at a Cadillac and he would remember what that was like and just buy that person a new car. I thought that was really beautiful.

Elvis actually died from an impacted bowel, confirmed in autopsy. He was taking prescribed uppers for shows and downers to sleep, but they had very little to do with his death. He was alone in the bathroom when he passed away, but there were people in the house. Also, he only got chubby the last couple years of his life. One thing that drives me nuts is when people say Elvis stole the black man's music. He grew up in the poorest part of Tupelo, where soul music and bluegrass was prevalent. He made it possible for rock and roll to be accepted and opened a doorway for all the others. If you haven't noticed, I'm a die hard Elvis fan. 😊 LFR if you have any other questions I'm sure I could answer them.
Elvis was a racist though, he said he rather kissed a dog than any mexican person. He made a movie in "acapulco" and didnt want to travel to mexico just record it in front of a green screen.

What I liked about that bit was that Bill made it about his relationship and being argumentative. He could've just say the elvis and cultural appropriation jokes on their own, but he kept it inside a story about an argument with his wife so that the bit had a couple levels to it.

Elvis died "straining at stool" which means his heart gave out while he was on the toilet. His girlfriend was in the bedroom so he wasn't exactly alone. The drugs he took were legal, but his doctor, Dr. Nick, gave him whatever he wanted to excess. His heart gave out.
Funny Stuff, but not exactly accurate to the actual person Elvis was. He grew up very poor and on equal footing with just about every other poor person in that region. Color was not something that was ever a problem with the King of Rock & Roll. He earned everything he did in the entertainment world. It gets real silly to bring up race every time and for every subject. Elvis was not a racist and did elevate many minority entertainers of his time. All anyone needs to do is ask anyone who met or worked with him. Elvis once was at a Car dealership in Memphis and as he was purchasing a new car had looked out onto the street through the show room floor windows to see an alone elderly black lady carrying groceries and waiting for a city Transit Bus at the Bus Stop. He then instructed the Salesperson to go out and ask if that lady would not come into the car dealership to meet with him. When she came into the Store, Elvis told her to pick out a car of her choice. Elvis was as down to earth as anyone could expect, and given his celebrity status was a very well liked individual among his peers. His back up singers have nothing but praise for his attentiveness to always being considerate to their needs. He stole nothing, and his only excuse might be that he was just another kid who grew up in a very poor area that included many influences that helped him to grow as an entertainer. You will know by the fruit the tree produces, its either sweet or it is not. Elvis was the real deal.
