It does work! This is a classic situation where the problem is between the chair and the screen... It's been designed to be hard to find.. They rely on people to give up for God's sake...

Going to the settings meanwhile turning off the showing of being active doesn’t work at all and I even did that prior to seeing this fully well knowing the outcome…I wish Facebook would let folks enjoy some form of privacy because that green light is so telling and annoying

You need to turn off the website face book as well, if you have any active status on anywhere you are logged in then you can still be seen. I have both app messenger and website messenger off on iPad and iPhone. I have the app Facebook on iPad and iPhone turned off. But I cannot find how to turn off the active status on website Facebook.
and its already on fb you do not need another app to do it just press on the messenger icon and its there ??? this is rubbish upload making things difficult when its easy
