Thank you for posting. This is something I will show ALL my students. My intention isn't to scare any of them, but to show that it's very easy to get in over your head very quickly due to a false sense of confidence once launching and landing become easy. Better to learn from the mistakes of others than make them yourself. Glad you're alright, and again, I appreciate you posting this.
I just lost friend 747 pilot Skydiver Pedro crash Speedfly in Ibiza, lost respect for this discipline, to and humility to learn step by step, same mistake, speedfly kills easy, lots respect for you sharing lesson thx
Wow ! what was different about the third roll? did you want to try a double roll or did it just get crazy trying the single roll? looked like the wing went to the rear a bit instead of a clean roll putting it off axis maybe ? ,,,glad ur ok though dude.
Glad that incident has just "cost" you a shoulder anad a few bruses, thanks for sharing, I have a mirage 8 comp and the "toneaux" (rolls) are ok (I take speed before) can I ask you witch size of mirage and you're weight?
Thanks for sharing this. I was just thinking of trying barrel rolls. will think twice now. Can you tell us what went wrong before the lines got cut? it looks like you stalled half the wing.
Me too, although not with skis to start with. Looks like his rotations were aggressive and he didn't keep the glider pressurised...correct me if I'm wrong 👍
most speed riders fly in the summer too. As an acro paraglider pilot, speed riding is the reason I took up skiing but I'd rather spend my winter days skiing pow and flying acro on the crappier snow condition days. I've seen too many speed riders with absolutely no clue about flying a 'wing' . All speed rider pilots should learn to soar in the summer and at least speed fly(speed riding by foot) in the summer. All the while I need to ski back country better ;-)
Great comment Michael, I'm just learning speedflying for the past 2 months ( being coached by experienced flyers ). Baby steps are the way to go. I will also take the acro pilots method to train/learn my wing over water with 1000+ meters and a reserve. That was a scary fall Stefano took. I guess pow does give a lot of second chances ;) be safe
@filmits the roll before the crash role he was nearly to slow, and the last one was definetly too slow, so the result was stalling the wing on one side. If you make barrelrolls always be sure to have enough speed. You were lucky that there was so much powder!
New Mirage 2013 size 9,5 Kg 95 - But..Was all my fault, the glider is perfect! ...You right!! ....One of the mistakes was not enough speed!!!!! Thx Stefano
That,s enough time, a reserve like the evo cross will open in that time no problem, if you have the presence of mind to throw, I have seen a successful deployment from 80' or about 30 metres, and the guy walked away. Dont say "oh shit", say "Deploy!" and you will most likely live to fly another day.
You definitely seem to have bitten off more then you can chew. Practice high G turns somewhat close to the ground so you have reference. Get comfortable with laying the wing over real steep. Then next time you want to attempt a role fly out much higher to give yourself some breathing room then pull some turns first so you have a feel for the wing and your airspeed is up then roll a turn if it feels right. Spot your horizon and don't over rotate. Better to dive at the ground 2000 feet away rather then having your lines go slack.
Yess very fast... I fell so fast because I cut two ropes with ski, so I also lost half wing, you can see in the video that initially I turned clockwise and counterclockwise after cutting. Thanks
reserve system? if you are trying manouvers you must have one.. or two! we have some great tiny ones for speedriders, check out the ultra cross and pod. paraglide.co.uk.

Why no reserve? Granted, normally not much point in Speedflying, BUT with you being new, trying to practice and all, why not take a reserve?
PS, his lines twisted at 2.10 and he hit at 2.30, so 20 seconds was enough time to deploy, pull his canopy in and make tea. (-:
Better to learn from Professional instructor rather than from somebody else mistakes or they might become your own.
