Shot shell carrying belt slide and how I make cartridge loops on gun leather

  • I was looking for something to do the other day and came across a pattern for this shotgun ammunition belt slide. I have made several of these in the past, mostly for the single action shooting cowboy crowd, but they could be handy for some hunters as well. this particular one is made to carry six 12 gauge shells, but the general idea can be adapted to a lot of different ammunition types.

I am creating a shotgun rig belt and I like this idea I was gonna do set of six loops directly on belt with space for other attachments I want to do like a drop leg holster a shotshell dump bag for target med kit and a pouch for the mini shells since its kinda hard to fit two in one loop with out one falling out

Thanks for sharing. How thick those loops are ? Would it practical to make it to 3,1/2” shells, concerning the width of front against the belt loop ? Thanks

I used 4-5 oz leather for the shell loops. You could put 3 1/2 shells in this. The brass shells I used were 2 1/2" and almost didn't reach the stop before the rim hit the loop. A 3 1/2 would stand out enough it would be easier to grab on to. The pattern would need to be changed if you do not want the shell to be taller than the leather.

We’re to get the templates for that?

What are the dimensions for the shot shell card body? I’m trying to make one myself!

Whole piece is an 8 inch by 6 3/8 inch rectangle with the two tabs for snaps added on. Tabs would be better if I made them longer. I think about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide would work better. What I use to lay out shotshell loops is 1inch wide and 2 3/16 long. 1 inch is how far apart the stitches need to be on the base. 2 3/16 is how far apart they are on the leather that forms the loop. In this case I was using a piece of 4 oz leather 1 1/2" wide and a little less than 5" long for two loops with about 1/4" on each side for the seam allowance.

@@bransonsgeneralstore awesome thank you so much! I might try to make one that fits 8 shells for cowboy action shooting! ☺️

Only thing wrong with this build....is that the bottom strip let's the shells sit too far down in the loop....way to hard to pull out ...not good for quick loading during a SASS match.

I agree on that. I was making this one for someone to carry a few extra shells while hunting and did not want the shells sticking much above the top. For SASS I would not worry about that and would put the stop right against the bottom of the cartridge loops. Then 2 1/2 shells would stick up about an inch.

Most I've seen that use these, they push up from the bottom.
