T6 Medium | The Lost Sherman Prototype

  • The US Army found themselves outmatched in 1940, as Germany showed the true power of armour to the world. In response to this, the US rushed to design what would become the M3 Lee and M4 Sherman. Somewhere between those vehicles lies the Medium Tank T6, a prototype vehicle that would eventually become the Sherman. Only one was built, and nobody knows where it went...
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated, I'm always trying to improve.
    Any suggestions for the next video or series?

    The US referred to the M4 as an M4. The designation "Sherman" was added by Great Britain. All US tanks in British service were given names of US Generals, hence Lee, Grant and Sherman. The US forces then started using the British designation.

      I have read that Churchill couldn't remember all the different alpha numerical designations so he asked for the vehicles to be named so he could remember them easier.

      @@KP-viking88 The M3 medium was the US designation. The Brits named the US version the Lee. The Brits didn't like the radio operator down in the hull. In British tanks the radio was typically in the turret next to the commander. The Brits designed and cast their own turret for the M3 that removed the commander's MG turret and added a turret bustle to mount the radio in. These M3's with the new turret were designated Grants.
      Looks like Brits designed the Grant turrets but the US produced the British specified turret, over 500 in my home state in Hammond Indiana. There was a lot of arguing between the Brit designers and the US designers. The Brits wanted a number of Grant turret features added or changed, the US was reluctant to change anything so they could finalize the design and start production.

    Just watched and immediately subscribed because I liked very much this video and just looked a couple of days ago looked your video on the "failure" of the RAM tank that was very interesting as well. Although I know quite well the story of the Sherman and it's enormous production I never seen or heard about the lost T6 prototype let alone the photos of the prototype. I was very surprised that there was no hatch for the assistant driver but a dome-like in its place! Luckily it was not putted in production with this configuration and I didn't know that it was originally intended to have side hatches. Unfortunately little thought to preserve the T6 prototype was ever done so only the first production Sherman named "Michael" has been preserved at Bovington museum, in this the British has been more historical minded! Good job and looking forward to see your new videos 👍👍👍

    The T6 was originally meant to be the M3 Medium and this design was from the mid 30s and was meant to replace the incredibly outdated M2 Medium. This changed when America sent some of its M2s to help Britain and their performance was lacking. The US needed a new tank not only for themselves but for others as well. The US ARMY GROUND FORCES wasn’t going to rush the design T6. Therefore a new tank was quickly drawn up to serve as a stop-gap vehicle until the T6 finished development. The T6 then became the M4.

    I wouldn't be surprised if the T6 was scrapped. It occupies something of a strange position. It's not one of the final versions with battlefield fame that might excite people. And, at the same time, it's not in its original form because it's been used as a test vehicle, so it's no longer "pure". It's not the prototype, anymore. It WAS the prototype; but now it's got all kinds of mods.
    It might have had better odds of preservation if they'd made it, tested it, figured out what they didn't like, and then mothballed it as it was instead of using it to test new parts.

    After the T28 showing up - you never know, but it is highly unlikely at this point. I find it fascinating that the T28 was forgotten for so long and nothing happened to it; makes me think that maybe the last person to drive/ park it made sure it was in a place no likely to be found hoping the it’s value would be realized as an important piece of history when found in the future.

    Most of the German tanks in France in 1940 were Mark i's (2X7.92 machine guns) and Mark II' (20mm gun), The Mark IV of the period was armed with a low velocity 75mm howitzer - not an antitank gun. Here are the numbers Panzer I, 554
    Panzer II, 920
    Panzer III, 349
    Panzer IV, 280
    Czech built Panzer 35T, 118
    Czech built Panzer 38T, 207
    Command Tanks, various types , 154
    For a total of 2,582 tanks fielded, .France had over 3200 tanks, the BEF had around 200. The difference was the superior German doctrine, not number or quality of tanks

    • @colbeausabre8842
      @colbeausabre8842 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Note that the Mark III of 1940 was armed with a 37mm gun - the same as the US medium and light tanks of the period. The M4 was given a 75mm, because Ordnance realized the unending race between gun and armor would demand it by the time the M4 came into service

    • @executivedirector7467
      @executivedirector7467 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Ram was not a better design though. The turret ring was much smaller. The 6 pounder was a better hole-puncher than the 75mm but had no HE ammo (until late in the war when it didn't matter any more). The transition from 57mm to 75mm was one of the main reasons why British armor units were re-equipping with M4s as fast as possible during 1942-43. By mid-1943 the only tanks left with 6 pounders (57mm) were Churchills, and the last mark of the Churchill had the 75mm as well.

    that cringe intro "hundreds of panzer 3 and 4s" yeah no they barely had those in poland where the armor failed hard in many respects and france was carried out by early designs and tanks like the 35t and 38t and "ultra modern" not really german tanks were often worse then competitors , the part where they generally were good were the radios and not using single or two man turrets and really not much else at every other point there was parity and advantage for other nations tanks

    • @RedWrenchFilms
      @RedWrenchFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Even in Poland in 1939 Germany did have "hundreds" of Pz IIIs and Pz IVs - over 300 in fact. By the time we get to France in 1940, they had over 600 of these vehicles. In both of these conflicts the Pz III and IV outnumbered the 35T and 38T so I have no idea what you're talking about.
      Additionally, they were incredibly capable and modern vehicles for reasons I talk about in the video and reasons you have actually repeated. Tanks with a single, large calibre gun in a 3 man, fully rotating turret, fully equipped with radios. That was ultra modern for 1940. Maybe not the "best" in terms of firepower or protection but this isn't War Thunder. In the next few years almost every tanking nation would follow their example, so seems pretty modern to me.
