Back in 2006 the Devils Whip, aka “Buck Creek” if you’re a local, almost killed me! I used to basically race to the top and back down with some buddies on mine. To this day I still don’t know exactly what happened. I blacked out right at the 8:23 time marker…. I accelerated straight instead of following the road missing the guard rail by about a foot and went airborne with my bike 150’ down the mountain side. My buddy noticed I wasn’t following him and turned around looking for me. After noticing trees and vegetation clipped he was able to find me. I was airlifted to Johnson City TN and spent 5 days in ICU. Miraculously I made a full recovery after suffering a broken neck and shoulder plus other knicks and bruises. Gave me a new direction in life. Funny thing is I had a dream I had an accident on that road 3 days before it happened. And in that dream I was flying with an angel. The name of the helicopter that airlifted me was “Wings”!!!

October 2015 I was riding up the BRP out of Asheville, pulled into the lot where this ends and checked my map as I'd seen I was still well south of Roanoke, and decided to take 80 down toward I40 to make better time so I'd get back to DC faster (I hate I81). Started down, saw the sign saying "steep winding road ahead" and had no idea what I was in for! They aren't kidding! Great ride; have to go UP next time! And get to some roads I missed that trip. (I was on my '97 T595 Daytona. 955cc triple, Race-Tech suspension with some other modifications.)
