    I don’t have any coding skills but I built a motorized masking system with a roller blind motor. When I detect the black bars I push a button on the remote to move the masking panels into place. I posted a little video of it in action here on TH-cam. Masking makes such a difference for perceived contrast I highly recommend people consider it.

    It's great that everything is finally coming together for you. I wanted to do this for the longest time, but dont have the right setup for it or the funds lol. Way to stick with it. Just the satisfaction that you did it all yourself. And everything works is probably more rewarding than the benefit of no gray bars. Great job tony

    I feel like if you released the screen + coded system you'd have a few customers, I for one would absolutely be interested in getting this installed in my room as I've been debating between aspect ratios for a long time and this would solve all the issues 😂

      This is definitely an option, however there is still a bit to go to make it a viable product for someone to have in their home, especially the stability testing needed or an easy way to restart the system which i am close to finishing. I am definitly open to the suggestion though, as I do have some plans brewing in the new year!

    Tony, would you mind sharing what material you are using to mask the black bars? I have a scope screen and over scan the projector so to fill the screen. This leaves grey bars projected above and below the screen. I am considering covering the front wall of my HT with light absorption material to counter this.

      @BuildMontage Me too. Cost me less than $50. Not motorized or anything, but even that is doable with easily obtained already-existing tech meant for blinds or curtains.
      How can they possibly justify $20k? Even if it has both horizontal and vertical masks, and an App that controls it, with preprogrammed modes. Considering you can get a mind-blowing laser projector for like $15k. I can see why they charge so much for a laser projector, but some motorized panels with an App for $20k? Common now.

  • @ballstadt

    That's quite the exaggeration on the cost of purchasing a masking screen. SeymourAV Proscenium masking screens start at $3700USD shipped, up to the $6000USD range. Much more affordable than you're letting on.

    I'm finding the placement of the rear and surround speakers odd. In my opinion they seem too high and the tweeters are not at ear level or at least pointing to the main listening position. My understanding is that you'll be hearing the off axis response from rear and surround speakers. Also I think the headrests of the seats are too high and will block the sound of the speakers. In my living room which just has a Samsung soundbar with rear speakers, I made sure my reclining sofa also has power headrests that fold down and don't block the sound from the rear speakers. I'm wondering whether you are getting good advice from your installer.

    • @SkylakeProCinema
      @SkylakeProCinema 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I believe those are 80x 60 or 80x 80 dispersion so its completely fine, but for that perfect point it just needs to invert speakers that would cake easy

    • @90sNintendoKid
      @90sNintendoKid 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just noticed what I think are wide surrounds and I also think they are too high and to me they looked to be mounted with the tweeter pointing above the listening position. I noticed they are angled but not pointing down.
      I reckon I could do a better job for a lot cheaper. It wouldn't look as good as this theatre but it would sound better.

    • @90sNintendoKid
      @90sNintendoKid 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In my opinion for the cost of the Trinnov, I could put together a better sounding theatre. I observed your room looks to be treated so I would keep that but ditch the whole system including the Trinnov.

      @BuildMontage  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Everything in the room is within spec. I am the installer and have placed things within the room according to the constraints of the dimensions. The dispersion of the HF also feels perfectly fine, and the Trinnov as well with the optomizer does an incredible job at time aligning everything to the seated position. It's easy to make judgements without understanding everything that has gone into the design, and the truth is, for where this room started, you would have to see it and experience it to understand why it's been done this way. But of course, I'm very used to detractors so it doesn't bother me at all :) I hope you enjoy your system and it makes you happy because that's all that matters in the end. This is the best I could have done with the dimensions I am stuck with - also , video can be misleading. I could invert the speakers as well, but it won't really make much of a difference - I have tried both ways :)

    Great video. Love the masking: For my money, screen masking is the most frequently over-looked and under-appreciated aspect of home theatre by a majority of AV TH-camrs. As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the non-negotiable essentials, love what you've done with yours. EDIT: I typed this whilst watching - I now realise your masking actually shifts *during* VAR films, which is kind of incredible. When directors implement this well, I'm sure it's great (eg Maverick ...although I do think it was a massive mistake for the first five-ten minutes of that film to be opened up), but with one of those later Michael Bay Transformers films your masking would be going up & down like a yo-yo! (Easy & sensible solution though - don't watch Michael Bay Transformers films..!) Cheers, and merry Christmas.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey man, thanks :) Yes the shifting inside the movie was my grail target and I was able to get it done! It's not perfect but nothing ever is, and it's more than accurate enough for you to enjoy it during a movie. Joker 2 has 3 AR changes and it handled them all perfectly except one time where it detected incorrectly but I didn't notice right away as it was only a small crop change. So, if I refine it further and can package it up into something "sellable" I will but I feel more people are against the idea than are for it based on the comments.

    • @3D_Blu-ray_Bunker
      @3D_Blu-ray_Bunker 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BuildMontage It's a superb idea of yours, and brilliantly executed. I kind of get a little depressed at how much MadVR has been promoting its "non-linear stretch" thing, and how quite a few people seem to have embraced that feature - your solution is massively superior in my opiniom. I'd definitely love to see a video going into more detail on this, you should be enormously proud of it.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@3D_Blu-ray_Bunker Thank you :) I just feel really passionately about no compromises when it comes to watching as the director intended. I do love MadVR/Lumagen for their tonemapping abilities but I don't apply any of the enhancement features, just the pixelshader tonemapping for HDR to SDR so you get a brighter image with better accuracy - but no other changes, you get to watch it in the correct aspect without grey bars. I will definitely be doing a video on the system in more detail in the new year when I have everything setup in the room :)

    The screen masking is very cool, and the subs should be an interesting video. Question on your riser, what dimensions did you go? I'm building a house with a 4.3m x 5.45m theatre room and was thinking of going for a 30cm high, and 170cm deep riser. Hopefully that is big enough to comfortably have a second row, but not too big that the front row isn't in a good spot. I also noticed your projector is mounted on what looks like a floating shelf. Any details or videos with what you have done there? Cheers!

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes 30cm high is better than what I have which is 17cm - but - I have a depth of 180cm which works out will. Youre room is slightly bigger than mine so it should be fine. The shelf for my projector I over engineered it to hold the weight - I didnt make a video on how I did it but it was very time consuming to get it all in place and hold the heavy beast of a JVC.... Make sure you drill into studs and use heavy duty anchors.

I remember your Krix baffle wall, the issue you had with room modes before adding that extra sub, I remember the progression of the room before the Krix wall and now you have done it all again! The addition of wave forming and all the trick bits! I am in awe of what you have achieved! Congratulations and Here's to 2025! I look forward to what it brings for the channel

      Man, high praise, it's super kind of you. I don't see myself in competition with either of those guys, I love Youthman and Shane's channels, both are doing it full time, where as I work as well so TH-cam is an aspiration for me more than work... Hopefully I will get my other videos out soon, especially waveforming, once my Trinnov is back in action. Thanks for the support and see you in 2025!

      @BuildMontage yeah it's not about competition and I think in my head both Shane and youthman have held the same accolade 🤣, it just an appreciation of the hobby and yours (and there's) application of it! I get such a kick and I am thoroughly entertained by what you guys achieve. It keeps me going and striving for what I am going to do next. Thanks to all of you for the effort you put in for both yourselves and us the viewers! Again all the best and see you in 2025!

    About your masking system: I find it cool that you could come up with a DIY project that you're satisfied with, and at a low cost. I just don't think I could live with the distraction of having it move during the movie. When you see an IMAX film with different aspect ratios, there are no moving panels: letterbox bars are the norm. Probably because it would annoy the hell out of moviegoers. But hey: I get that you're proud of your kit. I also get the indifference of other home cinema enthusiasts: black bars are way less annoying than moving panels.

      Oh it's definitely not annoying. 99% of movies don't have shifting aspect ratios, so the real advantage is going from the movie poster wall without a crop, to a nice crop before the movie even starts. So you don't even notice it happen. It was difficult to film because it happens way to quick in most cases. Also, the beauty of the system is I made it so you can simply have a manual mode even for the shifting movies, either disable it or just put it to one aspect ratio and enjoy the movie. It's all about choices, and for me, I love having the pure immersion during a scope movie even with the awesome black levels from JVC. It turned out exactly how I wanted it to :)

    Your masking system is really amazing. Especially since you have it working with a drop screen!
    More than a decade ago, I built a masking system over a fixed on-wall screen. It was all manual and usually required two people to turn wingnuts to lock in the top and bottom masks. Back then, movies didn't change aspect ratio mid-roll, so it was not as much of a bother as it sounds. That, and I only used the system for movies...no TV programs.
    I agree with you that adding a masking system makes a massive difference. I'm surprised that more folks are not interested in licensing your solution. Perhaps they have never experienced the results first-hand outside of a commercial cinema.
    I have considered doing a masking system for a new theater room I'm building, but I have to go with a drop screen. I had assumed that masking and drop screens were incompatible, but you have proven that wrong. I'm impressed!

      It’s amazing how a small change like masking can make such a big difference, right?

    I'd like to leave this here for a more grounded and objective take on home theatre audio: th-cam.com/video/Z-XeBZnTyRc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=l_tDUju6sW3WJ1L1

      I don't get into arguments with people trying to justify my decisions. If you don't like what I've done, move on. I never push my opinions on others either but I don't know what "ungrounded" statements I made about the audio in my room in this video. You are making assumptions without actually seeing the speaker layout or understanding the constraints in the room and compromises that needed to be made which do not diminish the experience. Krix/Trinnov is a superb combination and I have the speaker either in tollerance or close enough to it that the Trinnov can compensate for it with the optimizer. I'm happy and that's all that matters to me!

    Nice masking system! I made a basic masking system myself, with similar actuators and arduino. IR from Harmony remote to trigger the different aspects. My idea for auto detection was to add a number of light sensors to the main screen or a 2nd small LCD screen to detect the black bars. The prototype small LCD worked ok at abasic level, but i haven't got around to implementing it.

      Thats awesome! My system works totally off an algorithm analysing the feed through a capture card, but I love hearing how others are implementing it. My hope is to make the screen and masking and system all in one - which is going to be no small feat.

    Wow, I congratulate you, it's one of the best ideas I've seen about how a movie should actually look.

      Thanks :) That's the exact reason I did it, so I didn't have to manipulate the image and just allow it to display without grey bars. The irony is that this system could also do side masking as well with a few modifications :)

    Jesus. Cool trick but this is one helluva lot of effort to just overcome the limited contrast of a projector. And isn’t this a JVC? Aren’t the black levels good enough? Maybe big TV time?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, it isn't for everyone but for me, it has brought me that extra little bit of immersion which I was craving. JVC is greate 100% but even that slight grey bar annoyed me - so I killed a fly with a machine gun :)
