    Still the best lions series I've seen, better than 97. The team was immense. You forget how battered they got in the first test. Also that is some Australian team no rookies there. I feel nostalgic just watching it and it still puts the hairs up on the back of my neck. Look at the age of Guscott he hadn't even finished his GCSE;s probably. Thanks for the upload hike6 much appreciated.

      The 1989 Lions pack of forwards is probably one of our best ever. The 97 Lions were not very good - in truth they got very very lucky and should have been beaten by 15 points in the second test. They played no rugby at all. The 1993 Lions and 2001 Lions who lost in NZ and Aus were far better sides than the 1997.

    • @SuperBlackted
      @SuperBlackted 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      xpat73 Agreed, I think in 97 Geech had learned from not playing to your strengths. In 93 the all blacks had no back devision and 4 world class players in the pack, the rest of the side where strong club players nothing more. The decision to take them on up front was daft. The Al Blacks just lapped up the battle. I’m still sore about 2001.

    Thanks for uploading. Games like this were far more entertaining than the games on show today and there was far more stars and unique players back then. For me rugby really went downhill from 2000 onwards, there have been glimpses here and there but few and far between

      Banning of rucking has destroyed the game. Also look how quick the scrums are, they take an age now.

    • @supersquats
      @supersquats 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Lordy6957 Completely agree the scrums are a shambles now. Watched a game between Scotland and Ireland from 1991, there was a knock on, the referee hurried the players over to the spot the scrum was formed fed and over in 11 seconds! Todays games ive seen scrums waste 150+ seconds. The game is slowly turning into a hybrid of league/American football.

    Hard to believe only 3 of the Wallaby XV made the World Cup winning XV 2 years later (Campo, Lynagh, Farr-Jones). 4 of the forwards were in the extended squad but didn't make the final team (Miller, Cutler, Hartill, Crowley)

    1989 was the first time a 3 match test series was played between the Wallabies and the British Lions. Previously the Lions would occasionally play the Wallabies in a 2 test series before touring NZ. Australian rugby had grown so strong in the 1980s that a separate tour by the Lions to Australia was fully justified. The 2nd and 3rd tests were close affairs but the Lions deserved to win the 3rd and series.

    Watching this to compare the scrums to today's shambles. The front rows just get on with it, no "crouch touch pause" or "crouch touch set" or any of that nonsense! Also, the ball goes in straight! Says everything that this seems poignant when all it was was the rules being observed.

    • @supersquats
      @supersquats 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ive been saying that for years! Im sick watching rugby internationals now where the scrums take 90-150 seconds to form for play to be restarted or either a free kick or penalty to be awarded. The scrums back then formed and were over in like 15 seconds! I think in each rugby international now at least 12 minutes per game is lost with scrums and about half as much with line outs as well, throw in to the mix time wasting with on field injury treatments and rolling on numerous subs the gane has been destroyed!

    The Aussies can thank themselves lucky that the Welsh and Lions selectors overlooked the talents of the world's best scrum half of that time ie Dai Bishop of Pontypool. We in Wales all knew it regardless of club bias including Robert Jones! The Bish's only crime was playing his club rugby for the unfashionable valley's side of Pontypool as we at Pontypridd know only too well! If you want to get ahead, get yourself down to the cities of Newport, Cardiff and Swansea plus the delapidated but privileged one horse town of Llanelli.

    • @markbennett7900
      @markbennett7900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I watched jones play and he was one of the best scrum halves in the world at the time, dai bishop was competitive and was a good kicker, but jones was a much better passer than bishop, quicker at the base, more creative and was a very good box kicker, Jones even won Wales player of the World Cup and Southern Hemisphere player of the World Cup shows how good of a player jones as a 9

    Probably the best Lions pack ever: Young, Moore, Sole, Dooley, Ackford, Teague, Calder, Richards. Norster was actually dropped after the 1st test debacle - and he was seen as the best 2nd row in Britain and Ireland at that time. Winterbottom did not tour as he was injured....and Phil Matthews of Ireland was not picked for the tour which was a travesty. A victim of McGeechan's Scottish bias.

    • @philipmarsden7104
      @philipmarsden7104 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Norster was injured, if I remember correctly. I don't think Dooley ever won a lineout against him, but Dooley's particular "skills" (translate that as thuggery) were better suited to those internationals.As you can imagine, I'm not a fan of that man Dooley and Ackford was a far better sort of person and a fine player. My dislike of Dooley is most definitely not anti-english sentiment. He always seemed to me psychologically unsuited to police work and rugby. Also Finlay Calder was an excellent choice as flanker on that tour and I don't think bias came into it.

    • @xpat73
      @xpat73 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No Norster was dropped. The first test was awful. If I remember correctly from Brian Moore's book, McGeechan said "Wade you are in because you are big." Hardly a ringing endorsement. lol. Still they won 2 tests with Dooley.
