It's reported that Groucho Marx said, when asked about the political significance of this film, "What significance? We were just four Jews trying to get a laugh." However, it has also been reported that the brothers were very pleased when then heard that Mussolini banned the film in Fascist Italy because they thought it was an attack on him.
im 22 years old, and when i first saw this my reaction was (two years ago) "this is just great, the best humor i've ever seen" so i started to watch marx brothers in other movies, a night in the opera is also great... the boat scene on the room where everybody goes in, and the mirror scene on duck soup are simply the best things of this guys... i can watch this and never get tired of it
i have this on dvd iam 58 i remember a old bw tv two channels and i the MARX Brothers being shown . in the 1979 the BBC put on a series of Marx Brothers and the final film to be shown was A Day At Races and guess what happened the powers that were the final reel was shown twice in true Marx Bros fashion also at Night At The Opera A day At The Races albums by Queen

Best anti-war song and dance number of all time! "They got guns, We got guns, All God's chillun got guns! We;re gonna walk all over the battlefield, 'Cause all God's chillun got guns!"
That segment to the song was actually mocking an old -as they said back then- "Negro spiritual", a Black Church song entitled 'All Gods' Chillun got Wings'.
When GHW Bush announced Operation Desert Storm in 1991, I heard this in my head. I figured that GHWB would have been a good Firefly, with Quayle as Rusty.
Only a few seconds before the end of "Duck Soup" comes what I consider to be the funniest line in the history of the English language: "Remember, men, we're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."
One of my favorite scenes. Later in the film, Groucho says of Margaret Dumont, " I'm standing up for this woman's honor, which is more than she's ever done." Groucho claimed that she didn't understand that line, but others have contradicted that.
I've no doubt Margaret Dumont knew exactly what he was talking about - I've always considered her to be one of the Marx Brothers - the Marx Brothers were of course awesome, but they were at their best when Margaret was with them, downplaying some sort of prim, proper, prudish, air-headed "straight man" character for the Marx Brothers to play against. The Marx Brothers movies were never quite the same without her. (And, if you look closely in her movies with them, you could frequently see her struggling not to laugh at the stars' antics and Groucho's improvs and double-entendres: she definitely knew what he was talking about!) The boys - especially Groucho, Chico, and Harpo - were simply brilliant comedians, but the older I get, the more I've come to adore Margaret Dumont and her more subtle comic performances in their movies - she might just be my favorite "Marx Brother"!
the part where they were tapping on the guards' helmets and then Harpo hits the one guard as they walk off, that reminds me of a scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail in the knights of the round table song.
I think they were aware they were doing this... and dare I say that it's very possible they based the Black Knight scene loosely on the Dracula vs Frankenstein battle of the monsters at the end of the movie where ludicrously Dracula yanks off the Monster's arms and then his head! Gilliam knew the producer of that movie.
I noticed something about the credits, Groucho plays Rufus T. Firefly, Harpo plays Pinky, Chico plays Chicolini, and Zeppo plays Bob Roland... Just think about it. About how Groucho, Harpo and Chico all have these wacky, silly names while Zeppo's just left with Bob Roland. Is it me, or is that fucking hilarious?
Since this film was made in 1935, the most immediate example at that time of an outbreak of collective insanity leading to a cataclysmic war was the collapse of reason among Europe's leaders in July-August 1914, that led to Western civilization committing mass suicide. This sequence may be classed as a musical-comedy number, but it captures the lunatic rejoicing at the prospect of continental self-immolation perfectly.
A recurring classic! seen in little fragments in Woody Allen's "Annah And Her Sisters" it's what coaxed him away from suicide....the anticipation in Duck Soup doesnt lead to this, their is no anticipation, the whole of duck soup is the climax!
Zeppo is by far the youngest brother, but at 1:36 he can't even get his feet in the air as high as his three older brothers. Come on, Zep, get your feet up there!
In 3rd grade I had a teacher that loved Steven Foster and taught us all his songs! We could feel her glare from across the room when some of us sang, "I came from Alabama with a a bandage on my knee!"

I'm not particularly pacifistic, but hands-down, the two best anti-war movies of all time are "Duck Soup" and "Doctor Strangelove (or, How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love The Bomb)" - both brilliant anti-war films. I can't help remembering this scene from "Duck Soup" and feeling a bit of a sobering chill at the mob mentality every time I see the country catch war fever and start cheering about going to war.... The rest of the movie was just as good, too: for example, I can't help remembering the song where "Firefly" recites the laws of his administration every time I see the law-and-order parts of a party's platform, every time I see some talking head on TV wringing their hands over some tragic current event, or every time I hear someone complain "there ought to be a law!"

On the other hand, this, from 1933, is somewhat ironic, given what would happen in/to the world just a few years later. Maybe if they had done something in 1933 . . . .
I think they knew it might. Fascism/Anti-Semitism was already on the rise in Europe. Apparently it was also quite "fashionable" in America at the time too.
no according to the documenteries I have watched on them and as far as the wet mop comment goes, I have watched him, he has never been wet of any kind, yet his performances have always been fluid.
@nognilk I wouldn't really say he's a straight-man. To me, a straight-man is supposed to be a practical guy who interacts with wacky, oddball characters, delivering laughs by their reactions. In Arrested Development, Michael Bluthe is the only one in his family in touch with reality. In the Big Lebowski, the Dude is down-to-earth while Walter's a hothead. Bluthe nor the Dude are outrageous, but they're hilarious because we relate to them. But Zeppo is just dull and doesn't react to his brothers.
It's reported that Groucho Marx said, when asked about the political significance of this film, "What significance? We were just four Jews trying to get a laugh." However, it has also been reported that the brothers were very pleased when then heard that Mussolini banned the film in Fascist Italy because they thought it was an attack on him.
Oh did they tell him that it was not about him
Hard to believe all things considered.
That was a joke.
I think there's great satire in this movie. Imo, the Marx Brothers' best.
...And at about that same time Harpo legally changed his name from ADOLF to ARTHUR.
what cracks me up is how none of their banjos have strings, but Harpo still frets properly
Probably cos of his Harp playing :-D
Just can't take that musical instinct away! Were there strings on that banjo, I'm sure Harpo would have gotten a decent sound out of it 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎
That cracks me up. Though it does say some people have a lot of time on their hands...
they didnt?!?
i can never unsee this now lol
As someone whose country is at war, this song occasionally pops in my head

there should be an amendment for every US citizen to rehearse this every weekend and perform it every time we go to war.
Times that, surprisingly coincide.
Not bad at all
The pres, vice pres, head judge of the Supreme Court, and the treasurer should be the Marx bros
We did eight years later...and for a very good reason.
Officially we haven’t gone to war since WW2
Well, that would keep everybody fit.

They probably felt a kind of empathy with the African Americans of the time, since being Jewish I'd say the suffered a bit themselves.
Not mocking, but paying homage.

Margaret Dumont is the true straight-man in the Marx Brothers films!
Only a few seconds before the end of "Duck Soup" comes what I consider to be the funniest line in the history of the English language: "Remember, men, we're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

I think because he played the straight guy so they gave him a straight name.

I want the entire congress to do this the next time the US goes to war.

It's getting pretty close with Russia invading Ukraine.

This was the last time all 4 Marx brothers were ever together on screen😢
It's to bad. I always thought Zeppo was the greatest straight man.
you should see the day at the races, where harpo plays the piano into pieces pulls out a harp within the piano and plays it so beautifully.
this is and will always be my favorite of the Marx Bros. movies.
To judge from historic photos, the actual celebrations in Europe in 1914 at the start of WWI were not dissimilar.

I love this song so much.
For Paramount Pictures, I'm thinking this was quite an expensive scene to be shooting during the depression in 1933.
One of my favorite movies.
Get ready everyone and I hope I see you on the other side. Good luck.
One of the most brilliant anti-war movies to ever exist - very fitting that it’d be a screwball comedy.
