An agent's job is to find creators and sell their work to publishers. They can be good if you have no contacts in the publishing industry. But if you already have an in, or your book is already published, all an agent will do is take 15% of your royalties forever. But what about editing? Agents are NOT professional editors. While they do sometimes perform editing, it's usually to make a work more approachable for a publisher prior to submission. If you want an editor who will genuinely improve your writing, then hire a professional editor. But what if dealing with the publisher is scary, and you want to make sure you get a fair contract from them? Then talk to a contract lawyer! It's a misconception that agents have any legal training whatsoever, so if you need someone to look over your contract and ensure that it is not 1. giving away your IP, 2. going to lock you into producing sequels, or 3. overall parasitic and bad for your interests (which big publishing contracts often are, because their goal is to make money, not promote you) then please talk to a lawyer before signing. To conclude, an agent is not necessarily a bad route, particularly if you have no experience with the publishing world at all. They can be a good friend and guide, and they can shop your book around to publishers for you (though don't expect them to make the best possible deal - they'll usually take the quickest and easiest). My advice would be to talk to an agent casually to learn the ropes of the publishing world, but you don't need one to sell your book for you. In the case of "Unfamiliar", Haley's online following already did what an agent would have done.
