Just came home from 4 weeks vacation in the US (west and east cost) I was shocked to learn that in California, most things were more expensive than in DK (especially supermarked food, up to 2-3 $ for an apple) best Mexican is cafe Rio. People overtake you on the right on freeways, stop signs everywhere in the city. When my wife made an possitive remark in a shop about the friendliness of US staff, a lady was surprised to hear someone making a positive remark about the US, and bought here a gift. But staff in all restaurants (also fastfood) are looking for a tip. And in restaurants it is about 15-25 %. When you are shopping, there is a hidden sales tax, that is added to your bill, and no staff can ever tell me what percentage it is in their state. But other than those small things, we had the trip of our life, loved it
Well, you're definitely becoming Danish when you find the servers at US restaurants ect. to be almost overwhelmingly friendly. ;) But yeah, that's the difference between servers depending on tips to make ends meet, and servers in Denmark who actually get paid a decent wage. Probably also why us Danes are horrible tippers, cause we aren't used to it. :P
It is nice that Maya got to experience the US after living here for several years (and as an adult). Our daughter was living here on her own for a year (2018) between high school and starting university in the US. It is interesting seeing the different perspectives on things between the US, Canada, and Denmark. Also flying on your own internationally is good. Did Maya find the return with the stop over in Helsinki more stressful than the non-stop to the US? We also flew back on SAS (from Toronto) and had our flight here rebooked due to the strike extending our departure by two days. We appreciate having your videos as they explain how Danish things are and areas of the country we should visit.
It wasn’t really that stressful for me. Luckily the Helsinki airport is extremely small so it doesn’t take long to get from one end to the other. But I only had a 40 minute layover and I had to go through immigration in that time too, which was stressful haha
The European Championship in jousting is this year at Spøttrup Borg, where you have been before. It's in week 30 (This week!) and 100s of people will be dressing up in old clothes. Old beer and food, knights, canons, jesters etc. It's called Bishop's market.
US is a great vacation destination - used take the family once or twice a year. Large varied country with lots to do. Covid put a dent into our trips. Hope to go back in the next couple of years.
ref: 7:30 I have your hair color and added blue eyes so my protection level against the sun is at a minimum so I now the how it feels. I also got to test how well sun blocker works when I visited Texas and we spent a day at the Gulf. Apply factor 50 all over (i thought), but mist a few spot on my leg and feet. When we got home from the beach I had deep red lines where there had been no sunscreen and it hurt like .... So do protect your skin, you really do not have any to spare and it have to last for a long time (i hope). 🙂
Can you make a video about how much you learn in Danish like cultural and the language. Or it could be really cool if you make a Danish episode of travelling young.
We have done a few videos about the Danish we’ve learned in classes. We’ve not discussed how they cover culture which is a part of the later modules, perhaps one day in the future we can. I don’t expect to have an entire episode in Danish in the near future though.
So many good memories! One time I went for Mother’s Day and we were walking through the photo op area. There was the Peincess and THE DUDE WITH THE FALCON. I asked if I could have a photo with the falcon so we have this great photo of me, Maya and the falcon. All smiles. Good times 😂 - M
I don’t know about “I am home” feeling but I definitely had moments in the US where I wished I could just be in my bed with the danish summer weather. I was very happy to get back to my Scandinavian interior designed room haha
We used to have Pizza Hut too, it went under, I guess it was just too greasy for most danes. But I loved it, Junk food with a capital J, but that greasy abundance of cheese was delicious.
I only knew Medieval Times from the movie The Cable Guy with Jim Carrey. And I thought for the longest time, that it was just a fictional place created for that movie...
I vote that we should have Taco Bell in Denmark too :D Btw, i tried your Chicken and Waffles last time i was in CPH. I gotta say.... not my cup of tea :p
Maya. LMAO. You should see "Supersize me"! Q: If stuff is so cheap, what is the staff earning? If you can go larger for just 35 cents extra, there already charging to much 🤣 ! The House always wins 😀! Anywho Maya! Nice to have you back 👍😊👍
I dont personally think cost is related to wages, that is a poor excuse by the large companies that claim prices will skyrocket if they pay a little more. Poor food quality, lower taxes, and less regulation pays a larger role in cheaper prices…in my opinion.
@@TravelinYoung Guessing she gets it from Mom 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ! Just kidding! She is a product of Miranda and Josh 😉 ! You both should be proud 👍, and I know you are!
If you like medieval times, you have to come to Horsens Middelalderfestival in August. I believe it's the 19-20th of August. A day is probably not enough to see it all, it's that big, and there are usually a ton of people (60.000).

Hvor en del af de ting, du måske anser som "normalt " virker stødende? (Rygning, druk, solbadning) Hvad savnede du "overthere" ? (Cykel, bus, etc)
Maya, you missed out on a great prank there.. You should have told them about, finding a business man from india that.. Sells amd trades gold.. I think? Hes covered in it thats for sure.. He said he would put me in a penthouse with my own butler amd so on... I cant pronounce hos name, but he seemed nice. I think hes 38, but he might be 42, im not quite sure? 😁 He also makes clothes in a factory, but he never gave me the name of it. But they make handbags and stuff. You should see his pool, he showed me.. 🤣🤣🤣. That would have been one hell of a video. Omg. 😜
Welcome home Maya😊
Glad that you had a great time, Maya
..that's what vacation is for, right?
Good to have you back in DK 🇩🇰

Nice that you got to see DC (didn't know about the mosquitoes) and your (previous 🙂) hometown.
And friends too!

I would like to recommend Wallmans in Copenhagen - Might give you the same wipe as Medieval Times. Been there twice, was not disappointed.

just go past alsia-skari there ... the are nice people
Yeah I read about it not long ago. Would be cool to go one year!

So you haven't been at the Horsens Middelalderfestival? It's in August for two days.
The photos in the video are actually from the same one they filmed cable guy. Maya didn’t get photos of the event so I found some I took years ago :).
I think Taco Bell would do great in Denmark, so it’s just to get the money to start the franchise here.
We’d keep it in business!
I love the want for a Taco Bell in Denmark. My partner and I want a Hallernes Smørrebrød in the U.S. (namely Chicago where we’re from).😂
I vote that we should have Taco Bell in Denmark too :D Btw, i tried your Chicken and Waffles last time i was in CPH. I gotta say.... not my cup of tea :p

Maybe those prices for fast food can explain why people working there can't live on their salary.
The prices are likely more related to less regulation and lower quality of the food.
Looking at mums hair and Mayas hair, I have to ask:
Was mums hair that red when she was 18? Where’s the red hair from? Dad?! :-D
My beard was red before it started going gray :). We also both have red hair descendents in our family tree.
