I think every song that came out of his mouth should have been a #1 hit. No one sang or performed like the king, and no one ever will again. Long live his memory.

    Elvis wanted everything
    To be perfect.
He always was perfect when he was in public.
    His concerts were always perfect.
He wanted his songs to be perfect.
Perfection is a very difficult thing to live up to.
Elvis always did his very best in trying for his fans.

It was 1976 (I was 11 at that time) and I'd never heard the name Elvis Presley before. My radio was on and suddenly everything stopped when Crying in the Chapel came on. I didn`t even understand the lyrics but that song caught me unprepared. I was literally enchanted. I didn`t know who the singer with that incredible voice was. Some months later, I heard the same song on TV and they showed Elvis`s images and mentioned his name. I was in love and became a huge Elvis fan.
So, I don`t care what Parker or anybody else said, I love this song and I`m not a bit surprised that it was so popular. The world was in turmoil. The Cuban Crisis, the trauma of JFK`s assassination, the Vietnam war with so many deaths, the younger generations turning the world upside down with their sex, drugs, Rock and Roll, notions of the commune and free lifestyle, etc... Some people just needed some hope, something known and reliable to cling to. In hard and chaotic times, Elvis, with his enchanting and calm voice, reminded people of the power of prayer.

    • @atfourothirtythree
      @atfourothirtythree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

What you said at the end is the biggest reason why. Power of prayer. This is what this song does, reaches all walks of life with the invitation to pray because we're human and we ALL have trouble and trials we have to go thru in life.

      @Paul Gwyn
He possibly had very little say at the time, as the record company usually pick the songs to be recorded at the time of the studio recording.
Record companies call the shots, they're paying for the studio time, engineers and the like, are all under the command of the company producing, so they dictate, say what is what, decide what songs stayed on the album, and what was shelved. Later on Elvis may have had a little to say during the session's but he definately didn't have the final call. Even the Col, Tom Parker didn't have the final say. Record companies are of the notion, that they know best, they know what the radio station DJ'S tell them, based on feedback from caller's, listener's, who ring up. So the record company executive's know best, because they also tell the radio stations what to play from an album, or which side of a single to play, usually they will try tracks out to see how they fair on radio play, this also tells them how to arrange songs on an album, which order, which song will be the A side and B side, before it is released. The artist never has a say in these decisions. The Beatles had similar issues with their executive producer's, George Martin didn't have the final call, sad as this may seem to the readers of this comment, this is all fact. Being a musician myself for most of my life, and have recorded many songs in my past, the Record Company are paying for the studio time, they've arranged who is producing, and who is engineering the session's, so they dictate all the way through the process. If you as the artist, musician's involved, speak out you may get fired, told to get out ,(who do you think you are? Who do you think you are speaking to, all this type of caper, in the end, like all job's, we as musicians, do as we are told, remain the fly on the wall, or it could all go wrong, and having to pay back all the cost, could destroy you.
These are facts. Elvis did as he was told all the way through his career. The show must go on, there would have been times he wasn't really ready for a show date.

Love "Crying in the Chapel." I've loved it since I was a kid. It's probably one of the first Elvis songs I knew. Interesting that in 1965 Elvis posted this song from 1960 on the charts and also that the movie "Tickle Me" featured songs from 1960-63. Elvis' voice had changed quite a bit during that time and people that really followed him probably could tell that older songs were being used for that movie. I recognized that even when I was a little kid.

In 1966 I was 4 years old. One of the things I got a kick out of back then was rubbing my finger across the needle of my mother's record player. I was amazed that doing this made a noise come out of the speaker. My mom finally got tired of catching me doing it and showed me how to put a record on the player. She had 3 records; King Creole and Golden Records Vol. 1 by Elvis, and this other smaller thicker record by Jim Reeves. I played the Jim Reeves record once and didn't like it, so I played the Elvis records over and over. Several years later I realized the Jim Reeves record was a 78 rpm record, and I was playing it on 33 1/3 rpm.
Another funny side story is that a short while later, I was at my mother's work. She was a waitress and many days before I was old enough to go to school she would put me in a booth with a burger, fries, and some change for the jukebox. I kept playing this song I thought was King Creole, and would get disappointed time and again when the jukebox stopped playing and my song never played. Obviously I was not reading yet but was basically going on phonetics of what looked to me like the song King Creole. Turns out I was playing Carole King.
I've been an Elvis fan ever since, kept a scrap book of articles I would find about him as a kid. Read everything I could find, including his biography, and bought his music whenever I had the money. I saw him in concert twice and remember exactly where I was and who I was with when the news came on the radio that the Elvis had passed. RIP EP

Apparently he didn't know that RCA released it .. Carol francs version was charting at the time and Elvis' version cuts hers dead ... she had bumped in to him sometime later and basically said to him you could of waited to release yours , yours has came out and knocked mine dead ... he had no idea it was released .. he was a bit embarrased ..so he called one of the guys over and wrote her a cheque for $10.000 .. at that it was $75.000. STUNNING TRACK ... his VOCALS are UNBEATABLE round this time ... the whole album is STUNNING.👌🏾😊👍🏿

When Elvis sang a gospel song, it was almost like he was praying. Crying In The Chapel was no exception. If we all did what he was singing , this world would be a much more beautiful place.Elvis loved our Heavenly Father and he was always mighty proud to let it show. Thank you for posting because I've loved it forever. In my heart Elvis will live on until I'm gone from this plain. Then I'll listen as he sings for Jesus. Blessings to all

    Hi David,
It's such a beautiful song. What's not to like.
Can you imagine the shock Elvis had that this was a hit as it was locked away in the volt for 5 years.
I think apart from being an amazing beautiful song sang so sweetly, it was put out at Easter time.
TBH in my opinion I think that it would have been a hit at any time of the year.
    It's so sweet and tender.

I’ve always loved looking at the Billboard top 40 since I was a kid and looking at the peak position of this song-it was the week of June 12th, 1965 #3. The Supremes who were red hot at the time were #1, “Wooly Bully” was number 2, the Four Tops were up there with the classic “Can’t Help Myself “, The Beach Boys with “Help Me Rhonda”, and the Byrds “Turn, Turn, Turn.”

1965 was when Elvis was exasperatingly disillusioned with his movie career, and what was termed as
soundtrack purgatory, what better way was there for the Col to keep his pecker up, so to speak, by getting RCA to release a track which he recorded before the drudgery of Hollywood had set in for him.
Col was not daft, he knew his early 60 voice was sublime and would have the fans scrambling to buy something that wasn't a song from a movie, but was sung from his heart as he had wanted to record it, al be it some 5 years previous,
It's success was perhaps the very thing he needed to set his mind thinking that when he finally was released from the movie obligations he was gonna record stuff he enjoyed doing. only 3 years later he did that very thing, in the 68 comeback.
As for the track itself, a beautiful gospel ballad, with profound lyrics he delivered with reverent emotion from deep within.
    Thanks Dave

We have all been music fans for years. We learn of another fallacy: "right record at the right time." No such animal, really. Three decades later, when social media platforms were launched, and the music industry re-visited the vaults to scoop up all this material to re-issue online, we learned nothing changes: "Everyone wants to hear more of, what everyone wants to hear..."[Larry Mahoberac, Elvis: The Echo Will Never Die, 1986]. We know Elvis's professional goal, if there was a singular one, is/was to develop his vocal techniques. "Crying In The Chapel" is/was simply one of those recordings sung beautifully, and people decided to support it, because someone decided to show it the light of day. This is the simple hallmark of the music, and entertainment industry. We have all been music fans for years: nothing really changes. Thanks for the great presentation. Thank you, Elvis. Rest in peace. Thank you, Sir Tim Berners-Lee for developing the protocols which give us connectivity of The World Wide Web.

It's weird as elvis seemed out of touch through the 60s until 68 hit wise, but, he still did some good 60s songs. I think it shows his popularity as an artist for an unlikely song like this to make it to #3. He could sing most, if not any style of music. I grew up on elvis, and still think now I'm 51 years if age, he's untouched. I doubt anyone can match his superstardom. Unfortunately people are supposedly huge stars after a couple of hits or indeed, having a TH-cam channel doing something weird. Elvis was the real deal, a genuinely incredibly talented versatile artist and live performer. They'll never be another !!!
Known worldwide, even by people who aren't fans or wouldn't be seen to listen to him, by just his fist name.
    ELVIS !!!!

I think this is one of those things like how "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole and Natalie became a number 1 hit in the 90's. Also how Stand by Me and Unchained Melody became big hits decades after their initial releases. Sometimes a song is just so pretty, and played on the radio, people are going to love it whether it's concurrent with the sounds of the day or not. Crying in the Chapel is gorgeous, and would find favor with any serious lover of good vocals and great music.

With all that was going on at the time, along with the Easter season, as well as Elvis' Christian convictions, his heart really comes through during his Gospel songs.
The timing was right, and by this time during the two years of british invasion, CITC was a bit of welcome departure from what permeated top 40 radio, as was the likes of Bob Dylan, the Searchers and others.
The message CITC shared was especially applicable, the timing of its release & the messenger who sang it was perfect, a reminder of the One in whom we find peace through all circumstances

Hey there the original was this song from The Orioles in 1953 I don't know of it was a hit in that time I love the 50's and the 60's by the way, but to comeback to Elvis Presley version he did sing it with his soul and his heart his voice at the top he was and still is the Master of singing the Gospel, Elvis is singing it pure and clean and sincerely, I remember my first Gospel Album of Elvis I did play so many times the record player broke, I think the spirit what Elvis is bringing in this song or in every song Elvis Presley did sing, there are not many singers who can do that same as the Gospel quartets they bring the same spirit in the song.

It would of been nice if they would have included Crying in the chapel on his gospel album His Hand inine. But it was also nice on How Great Thou Art.

I heard a music on the radio that made me wonder why Elvis never try to write his lyrics. The song was like this "... I never heard a song sung quite like Elvis..."
I THINK that Linda Thompson said that she asked him why he didn't try to write and he sad he couldn't do it ... I wish he had done it and don't depend on Coronel so much.

God blessed Elvis 's music when he put God FIRST. Why do you think he won an Oscar for How Great Thou Art?

I think it was just a beautifully sung and well produced record, combined with Elvis' popularity that caused it to be #3.
The Colonel had very little to do with it and ran away with the proceeds, unfortunately.

People were thirsty for a song Elvis was emotionally in to... Not a movie song, which were great but ELVIS was truly invested in Crying in the Chapel.

Sonny Til & The Orioles had a hit with this song in 1953 and was the version Elvis probably knew, which led him to want to record it himself.

It went to No1 in the UK.
Parker liked it, but at the time he refused to let Presley release anything his company didn’t own the publishing rights to, and Valley Publishing refused to do a deal, so the song stayed in the vaults. By 1965 though, Hill and Range Publishing had bought them out, and so Crying in the Chapel was finally released.

I think it was a hit, because it was released near Easter. It was a #1 hit in Europe for, I think, 5 weeks! That, and it was just a really good song. And don't forget, Elvis also recently had a #1 album with Roustabout, so his career was still pretty hot during this time, despite the British Invasion. People forget that Elvis' career didn't really start to drop until about late 67 or early 68. He was still very popular even if his material wasn't that great. In other words, people loved Elvis they just didn't like his music at the time and hoped he would quit making bad movies. However, by late 67, I think that's when people stopped liking Elvis, because they just never thought he could do it again, and his good material was looking pretty old by then. That's why the 68 Special was so important. It was make it or break it time for his career.

@Paul Gwyn Plus, he actually beat the Beatles in a popularity poll in 1965. And don't forget, he was the ONLY American artist in the top 20 in 64, and 65! Constantly, that is
