Kershaws Livewire is currently the absolute best bang for the buck. $219 (BladeOps) for blacked 6061 T6 body and a DLC coated magnacut blade! Kershaw utilizes a dual spring mechanism (or “drivetrain” as those hardons at Microtech refer to it).
Well said, and your conclusions makes sense. Microtech has definitely reinvented themselves in a sense, as the amphibian and the MSI are home runs in my book.
I have a couple of Ultratechs that get a little sluggish and don't want to deploy from time to time. I picked up the Gen 3 Combat Troodon about a month ago, and the redesign is spot on. From the action to the new style glass breaker to the deeper engraving of the logo to the non-proprietary screws it's absolute money. I love mine, and my Ultratechs became safe queens. (The Mini Hera is in the mail too).
I like that they are finally listening to the end-user and fixing some of the little things that needed to be fixed. Fixing these problems widen the customer base.
I agree that they need to stay relevant in the OTF market. I have mixed feeling about having so many variants of each knife as well, on one hand you have variety and individualism but on the other you have speed to market. Either you love em or hate em, but Tesla, has shown that keeping the number of options down, really helps with manufacturing efficiencies and costs. I would love to see Microtech open a parts shop for customization of their knives, by offering all the parts separately for purchase. Offer more of a base type knife with blade style/finish X/Y and then you can customize it anyway you want after the fact. And if you happen to need parts to fix a broken one you can simply pick up what you need. I think this is a huge reason that they see 8+ week lead times for when you have to send in a knife for something that most people could do themselves. I would love to see a poll on Microtech knives, for example, what is your favorite model, blade shape, blade finish, and color. See what people are really wanting. 👍🤠 I have the same sweaty hand issues, so don't feel bad! 🤣
8:30 i assumed the price not going way up is partially buying in more volume. A bunch if new folders also. I bet the hardware change made a big difference.
I think you nailed the reasons for Microtech redesigning their knives, and I applaud them for the improvements... I do like the looks of many older styles, I'm a big distressed look type of guy, as fate would have it, it coincided with the redesigns and I bought my very first 3 Microtech knives, I have yet to get one of the new models, but believe me I will and can see how they are indeed improvements...
I agree with you and I think it’s a good play from Microtech. In 2023 I think Microtech knocked it out of the park. I hope they update the Dirac Delta next LOL.
All I care about is the blade, that Gen III is way better. The Point of Contact to the Handle is Reinforced. The 'Blood Groove' is actually a substantial suction reducer. The point taper is a bit more 'Spear' than 'Dagger'. If they made part of one egde blunted, for a thumb, id say they have maybe the best on the market? Maybe? Probably not for the price point but as the leading edge.
I agree with you regarding the prices. Have you had any problems with that Hera 2? I saw some comments stating they were having problems deploying and retracting possibly a design issue.
QA ISSUES RAMPANT!!! Just bought a $422 utx 85 bounty hunter and every tri wing screw was loose and even the glass breaker … it falls off track every 50-100 deployments .. the quality for a $400 knife is that of a $100 knife … very disappointing to say the least . To clarify the screws weren’t loose from the jump .. they all became loose after 2-3 days of having it… meaning no loctite used at all .. I’m mean come on
Why would you get one of these knives over the other? What are the differences besides one having external fasteners and the blades either having a single or double fuller?
That's about it, between these exact two you would probably just pick the one you think looks the best. The CT in the future will have more blade option probably, but these two are basically the same

Totally agree
Margins on OTFs have been obnoxious until competition has emerged.

Just bought my first, a Hera 2 from Eknives. Whatever they're doing, it's working.
😃
I swore I would never get another Microtech. Now, things have changed. I’m very interested in getting one of the bigger ones, that’s not an Ultratech.

@@edged_mindset Thanks for the reply - that's true, totally forgot about the blade options.
