  • “Railroadin’” is an Our Gang short comedy film from 1929, directed by Robert F. McGowan. It was the 88th release in the Our Gang series and the second to be made with sound. The plot revolves around the gang playing around a railroad station, where Joe and Chubby’s father, an engineer, warns the kids about the dangers of playing in such areas. After the father leaves, a character named Loco Joe starts a train with most of the kids on it, except for Farina, who is nearly run over several times. Farina eventually climbs aboard, and the kids try to stop the runaway locomotive but fail until it crashes into a grocery truck. The entire incident is later revealed to be a dream Farina had while his father was lecturing the kids about rail-yard safety.
The film was originally released without sound due to the loss of the soundtrack discs in the 1940s. However, in 1982, the sound discs were rediscovered in an MGM vault, and the film was finally made available with sound via a 1983 VHS release by Blackhawk Films. Despite being restored and released on DVD, “Railroadin’” has not been included in any of the Little Rascals television distribution packages.
The film stars Norman ‘Chubby’ Chaney, Joe Cobb, Jean Darling, and Allen ‘Farina’ Hoskins, among others. It was filmed on location behind the Samuel Goldwyn studio near Santa Monica Boulevard.
