This is why it's important for multiplayer focused games to have singleplayer and vs AI modes. If Splatoon had just made a simple bot player, people could have still try an approximation of the multiplayer experience. But it is what it is. We're too far now.

There will also be a sorta Dexit with Gen 7 as many species were Bank only too, and can only be saved if players have breed those species in Gen 7. Gen 6 at least had all non-Mytchicals available by playthrough, but there is a problem of migrating from past gens. If Iwata did contribute to make Bank for preservation purposes then I understand it (although ironically shutting down servers is making it obsolete). But they should've kept transfer features built in-game like Gen 4 and 5. There apparently fanmade versions of Bank available though but I wonder if they would be read as legit by the games.

The shutting down of internet on the one side feels like “fans now have to pick up the slack that Nintendo left behind”, whilst the other side of the argument being “Nintendo is just managing their server budget so that little is wasted”
But my main concern is Pokemon
Instead of providing an in-game post-game transfer system for free, they decided to have it part of a paid service that is dependent on an existing internet connection, and it doesn’t look like they are even considering of any type of compromised method to get Pokemon from gen 5-7 onto Pokemon Home

    • @jpaytonk
      @jpaytonk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

It’ll be the first time since the transition to the Gameboy Advance that we won’t be able to bring past generations to current games. The ability to bring the old forward has long been a big draw to many collectors and competitive players so this is not a small thing in the case of Pokemon. Especially considering Gamefreak has always intentionally put rare or exclusive Pokemon in specific games to encourage trading. Like you mentioned - by offering no new alternative they are effectively disconnecting players from 20 years worth of their games, something they’ve always worked to circumvent. The in-game transfer system should be an unlockable in every Pokemon game.

I kind of want to start a DS club thing at a local librarby, and I think it would be really cool to set up a Raspberry Pi to provide silly little experiences for DS/3DS users. One of these would be a StreetPass Mii exclusive to the club. The Mii would have something different about it each time, such as shirt color or hat, and would also have a single random puzzle piece for every individual StreetPass tag. This way, on the *next* session of the club, everyone has a different puzzle piece and they tag each other and get a bunch of them. I also think it would be really cool to do Pokémon giveaways/battles against a custom AI and stuff like that. The shutdown of the online services might be a good thing for this specifically, because it means I don’t have to worry about enabling people to cheat in online games with my custom experiences.

I think for me, the main issue I take with this plan is the fact it’s so soon after the eShop shutdown.
As you said it makes sense, but it also makes it seem extra harsh that they’ve only given it a year after that happened.
I mean imagine if you bought a game back in March, just before the shop closed, and it either utilises or is dependent on online functionality.
At best, somebody who did that now only has that year to actively use the game, as well as any other games that are in a similar boat.
They also reassured everybody that even though the eShop was being retired, online functionality would not be going away anytime soon and would remain “for the foreseeable future”.
And to me, personally, it doesn’t seem reasonable to consider exactly a year as the definition of “the foreseeable future”, although that’s really just my own opinion :T

From gens 3 to 5, transferring pokemon was just a built-in feature of the game. Now it's a subscription service that will eventually die. It's depressing. And it means that in the future anyone who plays the old games will be screwed out of transferring their mons. And those games aren't even playable on modern hardware.

Probably the thing that bums me out the most is Pokemon Bank eventually being taken offline. I know that it's still going to stay up, but the Pokemon company is clearly signaling it's going to be taken down in the future.
Meaning that you won't be able to transfer any Pokemon from Gen 3-7 and virtual consoles games to the newer games. The Pokemon games commitment to bringing any Pokemon you caught to any generation is super impressive. I mean what other video game let's you use a character you trained twenty years ago, and still use it currently.
I don't know if this is technically possible but I would love if Gamefreak made a peripheral that let's you put a Gameboy/GBA/DS/3DS cartridge and then let's you transfer your Pokemon to Pokemon Home. Basically having a local way to transfer your Pokemon.

I'd say that this is far worse than the eShop thing. The eShop closing just means it's slightly more inconvenient to obtain them, but they're all free now. My footage was used in an Arlo video!!
I actually have all the StreetPass Puzzle pieces. I should get that on my recording 3DS at some point, shishishi.
My hope is that the fans who are already working on things like Pretendo can keep doing that. If there's no alternative to get this content back (and some games have a good amount of content behind online play), then Ninty seeking legal against it is kinda bull in my eyes. Probably legally fine, but will definitely sour many going forward.
My main worry to come from this now is: What about the future? 3DS and WiiU are where Ninty really started doing online stuff, and Switch has carried that greatly. What about the Switch, its successor, its successor's successor? This isn't a Ninty-unique problem either, all the other consoles have this issue. I just hope we can find a good solution so we don't have to fret about this at the end/beginning of every new console cycle.

Fact is, the vast majority of games these days have an online gameplay component. And like Arlo pointed out, some of these games are almost entirely online-focused (like the Splatoon games). If you remove access to that component, you're removing access to something that your customers paid for when they bought those games. To say that that's not cool is putting it mildly. It should be illegal in my opinion. In an ideal world, we would have laws stating that companies must issue a full refund if they remove access to any portion of a game's gameplay functionality after it has been purchased.
But that's ridiculous! Why would any company ever create an online component for a game if they know they're going to be required to support it in perpetuity? Well, that would be their problem. They SHOULD have the integrity to support online functionality in perpetuity, so it's sad that that support would have to be forced. And if this were to result in fewer online-focused games hitting the market, so much the better. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over some predatory live service projects being cancelled.

I think that's what they were referring to. I steetpass my secondary 3DS everyday and It can get pieces for puzzles it doesn't have. From my understanding the Blue Pieces can be bought at random with coins or streetpassed. While pink ones you can only get through a streetpass. Once you have 2+ unfinished puzzles it becomes a lot harder to consistently do as it keeps jumping back-and-forth every time you buy a piece. While there is a lot of appeal for games that exclusively depend on online functionality, it makes me question their longevity. Aside from 3DS, I've already seen a lot of games the relied on online play get shut down. I have a friend who put around 1500 hours into a game called "The Cycle" but it couldnt keep an active playerbase, so they pretty much deleted the game out of existence. Now I'm wondering what games like Fortnite or Apex Legends will look like 20 years from now. Will they be deleted one day?

Of course they will. All online games will come to an end eventually (And I'm including games that heavily rely on online features, such as Splatoon and Super Mario Maker). All we can really do is enjoy these games while they last, and look back on them as good times, bad times, or even just wasted time.

@azurewhitetail9091 Splatoon has a pretty decent single player mode, so there'll at least be a reason to come back to it in the future. But it'd tragic that online only games will never get to be enjoyed once they lose popularity

I kind of anticipated this. It is certainly another reason to mod you 3DS and Wii U consoles for that pretendo network. As long as I can still play things like Splatoon and Smash Bros online, I'm happy. Hopefully there's some way to keep those Mario Maker levels up, although I kind of doubt it unless some insider at Nintendo were to share where those levels are stored or something

Only thing I fear is once they do shut the servers down, they might try and release another update for both systems to try and crack down on modding more, just like shortly after eshop was killed

The news actually makes me a bit depressed because I still have my 3DS so I would prefer it if they kept those servers open at least....

It feels sad seeing the Wii U/3DS finally die out, especially as I used to play a lot of MK8 and Super Mario Maker online. RIP to a generation of Nintendo systems

Because it doesn't matter, and would actually give Nintendo a reason to not support things if you'll do it for them. The core issues exist regardless.

@@Buglin_Burger7878 you know, i reread this comment a few times, but it seems one thing is inconsistent with it: you never told me why no one ever stopped to consider that a fan server may be up regardless of anything nintendo does.

As someone who played streetpass plaza basically everyday since I got my 3ds, I did complete all puzzles (not region locked ones at least) a while back.

There are probably some already existing comments about it, but I didn't see any yet, so I am posting this. Basically the "we'll discontinue the online service sooner if something happens again" does seem odd to most, but the biggest reason they mentioned that is becuase earlier this year someone found a security flaw for Mario Kart and Splatoon on the Wii U, and those 2 games had no online for months, when Nintendo eventually made a patch for those games.

im sad about this, but when i think about it the only thing that i think im really gonna actually miss is the super secret bases in pokemon omega ruby and alpha sapphire, that mode was soo much fun and did require online to get new bases.
but it is sad to see it go. had so much fun in all the pokemon games online, particularly gen 6, mario kart 7, and triforce heroes.

There are quite some 3DS games like fantasy life, where people trade items online. Now that will stop and it will be a lot more difficult to get some items that people want.
