Some tips that might help you: -Stay away from the shore, those bigger boats stun your troops when they land -Pikemen are horrible at attacking and will often take heavy losses if you do unless you unlock and use their charging ability. They're best used defensively as hinted by the game, especially on top of cliffs where the climbing architects will occasionally get poked over the edge to their deaths -You can replenish your troops in the houses though it will take some time so you have to plan it strategically
can't forget: -When an archer shoots a shielded enemy, it can stun them and make them incredibly vulnerable. -When a boat lands anything hit by the boat will also be at risk of getting stunned (near certain death for your soldiers) -The flag your commanders have is very important, some are more impactful than others, like tree causes infantry to become basically unstoppable by making them both an unstoppable force AND an immovable object. -Pikes can only attack standing still.
These are good high level descriptions but there's definitely some nuance that we can add here- Pay attention to the part of the shore that the boat is headed towards. They usually beach themselves between two tiles, one tile getting the brunt of the stun, and the other getting much less stun. If you can surround a beaching party right off the boat, you'll do well. Pike commanders are EXTREMELY aggressive, and if you temporarily direct the unit toward enemies, and then switch them to one square away BEFORE they reach the enemy-infested tile, the commander will run forward sword in hand, which gives the pikes time to form up. Also they don't lose formation due to stunned enemies, so they're good at "cleaning up" on flat ground rapidly, if the opportunity presents itself. It's definitely worth it to develop a sense of how long it takes pikes to form up, because if you can anticipate how they'll react to things, you'll get a LOT more utility out of them and they'll be much more flexible.
I've completed this game a few times and it's great to see others enjoying it as much as I do. I think you'll enjoy the skill of the pikemen because they charge and you can take out a large group of enemies this way. Quick point of advice tho, I've seen you move pikes into a group of enemies but pikes actually can't fight untill they're all in position with their pikes down so if you move them into enemies they'll just get killed without being able to fight back.
This video in a nutshell: "These archers are actually so good! They're wrecking everyone." "What are you doing, archers? I thought you were meant to be good!"
Damn you learned this game real quick! Even got the Elite archers! Some tips to play on harder difficulties. - Units can be replenished in surviving houses if the commander is alive. The more units you lose, the longer it takes to refill. - Pikes can't attack when moving like other units so they should be positioned prior to combat. - You can choose to leave units behind when defending, it's risky, but it means you can attack multiple islands in one day before the storm moves. - Heavy knockback works on archers and it's glorious.
If I recall correctly, the units take the same amount of time no matter how many people they lose. The only variable that changes recovery length is the special recovery trait, and the maximum amount of troops the unit has (changed with ring of command or the Popular trait)
@The Internet no, the circle starts more filled the more people you still have left. I remember it works this way because I usually restock early in the level when I have one or two guys lost In a group between waves.
@@Gr3nadgr3gory the internet is actually correct, replenishing squads takes the same amount of time no matter how many troops are missing from the squad, when you replenish a squad it fills in the circle with a faded colour to show how many troops are in the house however it still starts replenishing from the beginning and takes the same amount of time
being an architect is about using others to do the work for you so the architects are realy the big bosses . . . and the enemy soliders are realy just their followers
Keep the pikemen off the shore, they need space to be effective, don't rely on the archers too much cuz late game everyone is going to have shields, also you have to keep troops off the landing spot of the enemy, your troops get stunned and then aren't able to help for a few seconds, also the pikemen are great for giants and stairways. (Edit)(I've never had so many likes, thank's y'all!) (Another edit) you guys need to stop, like seriously stop with the likes.)
The archers are still great late game especially for dealing with enemy archers and swarms before they land then your melee units have an easier time fighting
I remember playing this game when it had just come out a while ago, and I forgot how fun it was. I would love to see you play into the late game. I got to the next-to-last island and just could not defend it. Eventually you get giants and ninja guys who will charge your troops and then at the last second, leap right into the middle of them. Then you also get giants with giant sized bows, who can shoot enormous bolts at you from half way across the screen, and that can cut through whole columns of troops in one shot. It really starts to get unfair towards the end.
It was super hard. I chose to upgrade shield team to the max with the 2x army size thing. They kinda help with the later levels. Perhaps try focusing on 3 main teams to the max
You can have pikemen and other soldiers on the shore, just dont make them charge into battle because then they will hoist their spears up in the air and can't attack. As for the shore, just don't have your troops directly where boats land as it stuns them. Pikemen are really good at holding positions and clearing large waves of small troops. Infantry are better at charging in. Commanders always have a knife (even for archers) so if needed you can force a squad to go melee range. The commander is the last to die so just make sure the buffer troops dont all die and take him out before that happens. Also a very important tip is to heal your squads in the houses. They heal completely and regain all lost troops after a little bit of time and in spare time its important to do it. One of the earliest upgrades of money are well spent on making tier one swordsmen (for the shields against all of the early archer waves), and picking basic tiers for everyone before advancing further. When there is a hidden face above an island, it means there's a new enemy that will show up there. Some items and abilities have a lot of friendly fire (jumping off a ledge, the hammer, arrow barrage, pike charge) so make sure your other squads are in a safe distance. The optimal full team I would say is 1 archer squad, 2 swordsmen squads, and 1 pike squad. You can split your squads up to hit more islands before the round ends but that is more complex. I would say that for squads with special abilities, try to choose the best upgrade path for that. (examples: if you get extra knockback or bigger squad then those go well for pikemen, extra knockback and bigger squad are also strong on archers, sharp weapons tough soldiers and bigger squad is STRONG on swordsmen). You can heavily upgrade a unit if it has a good trait on a good path.
Some tips to help: -Dont equip bad items on units early on you can easily find better ones some items suck. -Focus on getting good infantry they are the most versatile unit and can keep your other units alive as infantry works well with archers and pikes. -When dealing with tanky enemies use pike charge its super op. As you play you will gain a feel of the strategy needed and it will come naturally. Goodluck on beating this game cuz its pretty hard.
This such a great game. It’s so simple but has all the layered mechanisms of much larger games plus it’s a fantastic intro to pre-modern war and wargaming. I really wish they’d made more games expanding the system. There’s Townscaper, a gem in its own right but a tangent and more of a beautiful toy than a game.
10:55 Ecoducts (the name of those kind of bridges) have been made since around the late 17th century. The currently longest ecoduct is in the Netherlands with 800m (2600ft) spanning a highway, a railroad and a golfcourt.
Thought I'd share some tips: - Place lvl 3 archers on sea level, the knockback of their arrows will cause enemies to die or get flung off the boat (even if they have shields). Two sets of level 3 archers can take out most islands before an enemy can even land. Still bring other troops just in case - Keep pikes stationary unless you use use the charge skill, pikes carry their spears vertically while moving and wont be able to deploy them while under attack. - Pikes are almost impenetrable when covering stairs or any tile wide choke point - Two sets of pikes can lock down and kill enemies after they land, as long as you place them on two tiles bordering the tile being landed on - Don't place units on tiles that are being landed on, the boats cause knockback which knocks over your infantry/archers and breaks your entire pike formation Regarding Items/Abilities: - Arrow volly is pointless once you have lvl 3 archers, if you use archers correctly enemies almost never get on the island for you to use the ability - Spear charge is great for open maps where pikes would struggle otherwise, you can easily defend long beaches by charging down the coast, kinda useless in mountainous maps - Cliff dive is pretty decent, knocks over enemies in addition to dmg, useful for breaking shields or dealing with large enemies, kinda useless in flat maps - Upgrade philosophers stone, you're not even halfway thought the game, you have plenty of time to make a profit off of it. - In my experience the Warhammer is better on pikes, the knockback makes it easy to peel enemies off, still good on infantry though
I have completed the game several times, my best advice are: -Always have a Bow division. -If you seen there are no range enemies its likely you can win with only pikeman (depending on the island, 1 army can be enough, on others maybe add another army of bows or pikes -Ive found the perfect combo for all the game is 2 shield and 2 bow. The pike is really situational but can be incredibly OP, so its always good to have one. -Dont bite more than you can chew. The only times I have messed up before the final battle was while trying to save 2 islands in one turn with way to few armies. You will basically need to do this a lot but when in doubt play it safe.

If theres a big wave coming in, and if the place they land is not that huge, just put your pikes. The enemies wont try to get around, will just rush into the spikes. love this game so much!! i can see you're already learning the best ways to use the different types of weapons, one recommendation i have is that you don't move the pikemen during a fight because they can only attack properly when they're still
I haven't watched the full video yet so forgive me for any ignorance, but I feel the need to point out that if your army is on the tile a ship lands on, your army is briefly stunned. It would be better to defend the area around the landing tile instead of the tile itself
I haven't watched all of this yet, but do your fighting where possible at the top of the slope. After your first run have a starting trait of heavy weapons and make them your archers. They clean up the bosts before they get to shore.
Some tips that might help you:
-Stay away from the shore, those bigger boats stun your troops when they land
-Pikemen are horrible at attacking and will often take heavy losses if you do unless you unlock and use their charging ability. They're best used defensively as hinted by the game, especially on top of cliffs where the climbing architects will occasionally get poked over the edge to their deaths

I love this game! I have been waiting waaay too long for somebody to make a video on this
10:47 doesnt a bridge need access at both ends? otherwise it is just an arch right?
I mean, true engineer would knew that, right?
Excited for part two
You can heal squads mid-fight by sending them into a house. Take a little time, but worth it on some islands.
‘So this gives him the ability to jump off a cliff’ sounded so funny😂
I haven't watched the full video yet so forgive me for any ignorance, but I feel the need to point out that if your army is on the tile a ship lands on, your army is briefly stunned. It would be better to defend the area around the landing tile instead of the tile itself
Jabena artifact lets you use the chief twice per turn, you can leave no island behind if you use local commanders.
Thea can take on Bump map him/her self. Just put him/her on top of the stairs.
you can heal teams by putting them in the houses.
I saw a bridgemas sweater last night. It took quite a bit of willpower not to just take it then and there.
More please. This was great fun to watch.
Thanks for the reminder that this game exists and is a lot of fun to play. You have a lot left to learn, though.
I haven't watched all of this yet, but do your fighting where possible at the top of the slope. After your first run have a starting trait of heavy weapons and make them your archers. They clean up the bosts before they get to shore.
Love 'The bridge review' 😆
Cheeky “…just you” from the editor at 18:27 almost missed that one
Would love to see more of this game!
Ahhh! Ive been playing bad north on and off again for years I love this game
Finally someone plays that!!! That's my favourite game
I actually enjoyed this one! The strategy aspect is Intresting.
Yesss finally my fav game😁😁
11:31 welp the pikes got stunned
I would love to see more of this game, it seems really fun!
The Archers are less accurate the further "spots" they are away from the enemy, height isn't an advantage when you're further as the spots go
Ive played this game so much i just wish they continued to update this fantastic game
i've literally fallen in love with your videos
This is such a fun game. Just found your channel and loved your kerbel and skyline videos but iv been playing bad north forever. It gets really tough
Loved this video. Very funny that you are throwing the pikemen around the place when their description is to keep them in one place lol
This game is really fun!!!
I’d love to see a compilation of how many times Matt said “archers” in this video 😂
Definitely need to see more of this!
Bad West you say? Playing in an Ocean, or perhaps a Lake? Sounds like my specialty.
