You know what the release of this game reminds me of? When Them's Fightin' Herds came out. That game was also looked down on as some sort of trash game with little cartoon animals, no way it could be good, looking down on it in disdain. And then people started actually playing it, and realized, "Whoa! This game is legit!" and then Them's Fightin' Herds ended up on EVO From playing Idol Showdown I found out that it is also a legit game, it is easy to learn so its perfect for people that want to get started in the fighting game genre, but at the same time is hard to master, so its good for veterans too. The movements are fluid and the controls are good and responsive, the pixel art animation is top quality, so is the music, the combos are fluid, and it have a good flow, but don't feel cheap, the 8 characters are balanced and well built and polished (and the devs have already announced a soon to be, also free, update where 3 more fighters will be added to bring the new total to 11). The online play is great too. And then there is the little details, like the training mode and tutorial, and how the movement list also includes animations to show you just what the move looks like, all little details that make a good fighting game be good. So yeah, Idol Showdown is also legit, and I would not be surprised if it eventually ends up in EVO like it happened with Them's Fightin' Herds
As someone who's been playing fighting games since Street Fighter II in the arcades and has been a fan of Hololive for a few years, I've been having tons of fun with this. The people behind it clearly know their fighting games; this plays like a combination of Marvel VS with Guilty Gear, with a bit of 3rd Strike thrown in. If you go through the tutorial, you'll see why. If you go into the command list, it explains down how the moves and collabs work. For example, Kiara's Off-Collab is basically a moveable Aegis Reflector, but without the extra combos or unblockables. Risu's nuts are Oro's Tengu Stone. The first half of Aki's super is Tron Bonne's super from MVSC2. Some of Botan's combos are taken directly from Noel from BlazBlue. Sora's musical zoning is a combo of I-No and Venom's moves from GGX2. Some of Fubuki's moves are taken directly from Ky Kiske as well. That extends to the unlockable costumes, too; there are references to Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Darkstalkers, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Melty Blood.
