And if you listen to the old childrens' tales from the Guru Laghima ....
It's been 10,000 years I don't think that's the oasis. The geography should change. The oasis was in the Northern Water tribe.
This doesn't look like the North
Carlie saying “did they use him for fire wood” was so out of pocket 😂😂😂😂
Lol You know I read this comment before playing the episode and instantly thought “had to be Carlie who said that” and sure enough, it was.
Carlie being low key unhinged is great
I nearly puked with laughter
I had the same thoughts and if cutting some of it would even hurt him.
If that's a regular wood then it shouldn't hurt since it's not innervated.
From Ange shipping Eska and Bolin to Carlie shipping Wan and Raava... they crack me up so bad 😆
In fairness, Raava and Wan are literal soulmates 😏
@@Mrrynwhich... Wan is lucky, imagine that holy ectoplasm.
Wan had a year to prepare for Harmonic Convergence. If you remember Aang had about 9 months to prepare for the comet (from the time Roku warned him in the fire temple). There was the hint, 'you've done it before'. Just as Wan did it in the past.
aangs goated fair play
Well tbh, Wan had a far bigger threat to deal with with absolutely no one to learn from. Aang without guidance wouldn't have reached anywhere near beating the fire nation or even beat Ozai. Wan probably would have washed new gen villains probably with just fire bending after 3-4 months. Him surviving with spirits alone in the wilds after seeing how powerful and dangerous they are in ATLAB, and, also keeping up with and tanking hits from full powered Vaatu pre full combination with Rava just puts him in the league of his own. The thing he is first generation of everything is usually the worst due to not having anyone to learn from or not having any foundation to do stuff is absolutely massive. Potential wise Wan >>>> any avatar shown till date in every category, the feats he showed as the not only the first avatar but also the first permanent bender is insane, not to quote the other three elements he learned all on his own.
@@FIRE-yy1zt spirit animals taught him and the light spirit was guiding him
@@rollzmoist5061 Only the dragon taught him about fire bending, we clearly see he learnt the other three by himself. Also, Rava doesn't know about bending, hence, she can't guide him. She only held the elements for him, he had to learn by himself.
Actually, Angelo, Wan is a double pun!
Yes, Wan sounds like One, and he’s the first… but it also sounds like the Chinese word for “ten thousand”, and it’s been 10,000 years since his lifetime.
The harmonic convergence is also on a ten thousand year cycle, and it's my understanding that "ten thousand" is used to poetically mean "many," and the Avatar is one person with many lifetimes.
@@mikkosimonen"what do the numbers mean?!?!!"
Which also ties to, fittingly, a major spirit from ATLA: Wan Shi Tong, custodian of the spirit library.
aka "He Who Knows Ten Thousand Things"
Wan...Ten Thousand
@@Mrrynthe whole name can be directly translated too. "Shi(事)" = "things/matters" and "Tong(懂)" = "know/have knowledge of"

IKRRR
Na, cringe.
@@Jay-s4n7m"na, cringe" gtfoh 😂
@TimothyGod it is. Just like your name.
@@Jay-s4n7m ooo so edgy 😂
So before the question comes up.
Turtles gave people the power to use the elements.
The "bending teachers" aka the dragons, badgers, bisons, etc., taught them bending (aka the technique).
Yeah, you could actually see Ange and Carley point that out with the scene of the Dragon teaching Wan to firebend via the "Dragon Dance".
The "etc." in your list is just the moon 🌙
Finally someone else gets it I couldn't understand that
Lame retcon.
THANK YOU. This is very important to mention
Fun Fact:
The place Avatar Wan passed away
was the same battlefield Zuko rides through
on the Ostrich-Horse in the episode "Zuko Alone"
Although a fun popular theory, it's highly unlikely: it was "10 thousand years prior", and we are clearly shown that earthbenders still use the same earth discs as projectiles during the 100-year war. It's impossible that those old discs didn't succumb to erosion, but it's way more likely that the battlefield Zuko rode through was just one of many battlefields that saw earthbenders fight.
What's the evidence?
@@kogarashi_kaito it has actually been made canon by the creators, but IMO this is a lame retcon.
This is technically true, but it’s dumb. There are very few historical monuments that would last that long, especially in a world where people can move rocks without touching them. We have the pyramids and Great Wall but like, close to 7000 years, not 10,000.
@@LacertosDo you have the source?
22:13... Soundtrack. Soundtrack. SOUND TRACK. I love the callbacks with the soundtracks in this show. Usually, we hear the Korra "twang"/version of the Avatar theme, but as we see at 22:34, it is just the full Avatar theme... in all its glory. Love it!
"Did they use him for firewood?" The shock on Ange's face at that comment hahaha
Raava didn't give Wan the power of air, she was just storing the other elements for him because he couldn't hold more than one at a time. She had to pass through him each time he wanted to change to any element, until they fused permanently and her power let him (and all subsequent avatars) hold all the elements at once. The airbenders tattoos were likely inspired by Raava because they were much more in tune with the spirits than people from the other lion-turtles, and seemed to know about Raava and Vaatu's conflict.
I never pickup up on that, cool!
@@gabrieltheazevedoit was the point, since holding more than one element destroys the human who would have been in his position
Lamest retcon.
@@michaelgarrett139how is something a retcon when it was never established before, it's literally a whole new thing occurring, it's like calling u a retcon of ur parents bcoz u didn't exist before ur mom gave birth to u 😂😂
@alwandemthethwa7594 ur arguments make no sense. I better not be debating someine younger than 20...
This is probably the greatest set of episodes in entirety of Avatar
Bad retcon. Turned into typical anime trash
@@michaelgarrett139
What exactly is it retconning?
@kentknight1922
Spirits in avatar were never anime trash made of teacups, mushrooms, or blobs with legs looking they came outa Adventure Time. Spirits never were that numerous and never changed cuz of emotions and traditions being trashed. If so, then what were they doing during the 100 year war? Why werent dark spirits raging all over? Why werent there thousands upon thousands of them whenever aang visited the spirit world? Retcon
Spirits always had this eastern spiritual philosophy about. They were the embodiments and manifestations of nature. Ying and yang, push pull, absolutely exists in the natural universe therefore manifests as spirit fish. Haibi of the forest. I can go on. Retcon
Bending was specifically said to be taught by the spiritual animals. They were the physical manifestations of elements that make up and bind nature. The spirits happened to be those animals. They said the dragons were the FIRST firebenders, the badgermoles were the FIRST earthbenders and the first humans to earthbend were Oma and Shu. They changed that to lion turtles and the animals werent that spiritually commected to the planet or nature, they just kinda taught ppl to move a little better. Retcon
Air bending has always been said its the closest to the spirits, then in korra S2 they say its water. Retcon
Avatar state used to be this emotionally powerful moment everytime it occurs, even when its mastered. Yet in korra she busts it out no problem on a whim for a lil boost. Slight retcon (more so disrespecting and deluding what the avatar state is)
Diminishing metalbending and tophs sight to just any earthbender can if they just try is also bullcrap. Letting korra essentially learn everything is obnoxious mary sue nonsense.
Speaking of korra being a poor protagonist, she never grows or changes. She says she does. She does go thru things, then proceeds to behave the same way she has since season 1. Shes brash impatient, angry, doesnt listen or think, very confontational, yells at her friends n family as a first tactic. Shes unlikable. And didnt earn any of her power. And she loses alllllll the time when its not lowly grunts. Like its some weird fetish to see an 18 to 24 ish year old women get beat up alot and alwayyyyys screaming or grunting in pain or shock. Its weird.
Korra as a show is trash. Adds so many typical trash anime tropes. Avatar was never anime. It was never eastern based. Its an american show inspired by eastern philosophy on spirituality. It was beautiful. They watered it down in korra, its a fanfic pet project by the creators who finally became writers and directors. Theres a reason when nickelodeon heard their pitch, they said yes but surrounded them with ppl who know how to make a tv show.
Korra is objectively bad as a continuation of the avatar universe. However, it attracted many new fans for different reasons, so it stands on its own to them. Fine. But its not avatar. It doesnt follow any of the in universe rules or world building or anything.
Also 1920s New York city is not why people watch avatar.... so out of touch and stupid.
@@michaelgarrett139spirits were always that many, nice try 😂
plus why would the spirits rage when they are living peacefully in their world, they only started bcoz their sacred places were burnt, they don't care about the humans places being ravaged, if Ozai burnt the sawmp area that aang and the rest showed up in, then guess what, they would've appeared, but that wasn't a plot line now was it
Vaatu is bound with bending inside the spirit world, so only a bender can free him. Wan closed the portals (until Korra opened one) so no one could bend Vaatu out.
Prior to Korra opening the portal, humans could only project their mind into the spirit world, and as you may recall, they are unable to bend like that.
The Avatar State is when the human combines their energy with Raava's spirit, and gains her boost in power. That's why the eyes glow white, like Raava glows.
This honestly is such a great prequel backstory. The art style change, and practically an entire new dynamic in the world of old, it's amazing. Like they could have made it a full season but they went with keeping it short and concise, to really show how different the world was and to snap it back to the present day properly.
Wan was already standing up and challenging against inequalities, injustices, and their status quo, and standing up for his friends and other people back on their fire lion-turtle city, and also he already was showed feeding his small part or portion of the food that he stole to the hybrid animals in their shelter on the fire lion-turtle city, and all of these happened even before he was in the Spirit Oasis and got thrown and soaked in its waters.
Wan was already mostly a good, friendly, compassionate, clever, ambitious, and brave person worthy to be the first Avatar, even before he went to the Spirit Oasis in the Spirit Wilds, got thrown and soaked in its waters, and then later showed compassion by helping, saving, freeing, and befriending the cat-deer and also his future animal guide and friend.
Exactly. Looking for this comment. Lots of people think he starts off a scoundrel cuz he's stealing without looking at his motivations
I love the little detail of Raava, the primordial spirit of light and order, still referring to a Lion Turtle as "Ancient One."
Really ties to the ATLA Lion Turtle referring to "beginningless time."
Good job noticing the animation decline, the original animation studio that handled ATLA and Book 1 (Studio Mir) was not involved in the first half of this book. Another studio animated episodes 1-6 and 9, while Studio Mir was brought back in to animate 7, 8 and 10-14! in good news though, Studio Mir animated ALL of book 3 and 4 :)
Stephan Yuen ( Also voices Invincible and is Glenn from walking dead) as Wan is the best part of this whole season I could watch an entrie show about this dude.
Yooo I never caught that was Stephen Yuen!
while you're right I've always wondered why he doesn't get the same criticism as Korra, even though he's also a cocky bastard that screws up massively by being hasty and trying to solve things with violence. It fascinates me a little from a writing perspective that of the people who dislike Korra many still like Wan. So what are the writers doing for Wan here, that works?
@@oq1106 I personally never really disliked korra, I've known many athletic competitive girls with the same attitude and cockiness. I think my biggest issues with season two is the retreated ground. With her not learning from her mistakes, and her usually getting out of jail free by punching. It's why many fans enjoy season 3 and 4 more because she is finally broken down and has to take some self inventory. I think ending the season with breaking the avatar cycle rubs alot of people wrong too, me included for a while. But the failings of two for sure get fixed in seasons 3 and 4
Wan from my perspective gets a pass because we only get to spend 2 episodes with him and in the same episode he realizes his mistake he fixed it even though years for him passed. Aang frustrated me early on too as a kid because I couldn't Identify with his lack personal responsibility
@@jbearclowater yeah took me my second watch to hear it
yeah, honestly learning the origin story of the avatars was the best part of all of Korra for me
Mula, Wan's cat-deer, was the first animal-guide, meaning it reincarnated alongside him and would eventually be reborn as Fang, Appa, and Naga.
Omg
that’s so wild
Source: trust me bro
Thats not how it works. And even so thats corny af
That's not how it works, it just so happens that every avatar has an animal guide, it's just a fun detail the creators added
Light and Darkness. This duality of Ravva and Vatuu is also apparent in their names and color schemes. In Sanskrit, vatu (वतु) is an interjection meaning "silence!", which is the opposite of the noun ravaḥ (रवः), which means "sound". The two spirits are also negative images of each other.
15:55 not Carlie shipping Raava and Wan 😭😂
the order that Wan visited the lion turtles to get the elements is the order of the Avatar cycle. Fire, Air, Water, Earth
“Im sorry Raava”
I tear up every time 😭
Notice that the ancient Airbenders don't yet have their sky bison - the design in tattoos changed when that relationship began and they learned the intricacies of airbending from them, the original airbenders, as a way to honor their new companions and teachers
6:26 yes Carlie is a fellow Pokémon XY and Z enjoyer
Let's go season 2 might not be my favorite but these episodes are some of the best in the entire franchise!
“In the era before the Avatar, we bent not the elements, but the energy within ourselves.”
- The Lion Turtle Aang met
28:39 bruh...harmonica convention 😂😂😂😂😂am done😂😂😂😂
It's neat that the order in which Wan gets the elements becomes the Avatar cycle. Fire, then Air, then water, then Earth.
9:03 there was a subtle part before Wan was banished, and he gave his only food to some woodland critters
Aang's spiritual animal, Appa, was a Sky bison.
The old priestess presented Korra a herd of Air bisons.
Unfortunately, Appa was the last of his kind. :(
The water did not change wan. He was always like that, and so it wasnt done fast despite the fact you feel it was. Examples are the fact that he was an inspirational robin hood who also cared for animals as you saw him forgoe his own piece of bread to feed the little creatures that showed up.
I watched kora few yrs back and I actually never realised that the place where the yin and yang lived in the water tribe in avatar aang was actually in this episode
1:49 “ my name is Wan. and I’ll show you how I became…” *blood splats* INVINCIBLE
😂 props to our boi Steven Yeun for doing Wan justice 🫡🔥🍻
6:25 🤣 Carlie with the Greninja shout out 🐸🥷
Mike DiMartino on Braving the elements recently said he wanted to have an episode(s) that covered this backstory in ATLA. But they just didn't have enough time or money.
LETS FREAKING GOOOO!!!! The circle is complete!! The way the writers were able to wrap everything up in this story is mind blowing!!!
Cool detail I can share. If you invert Vaatu's color to negative, it is the color of Raava. Same way the other way around.
I never understood why people called those episodes retcon when they came out when we clearly see Wan learning the proper ways of bending with the dragon, which means he did the same with the other elements lol
This episodes were going to air with ATLA but they didn't see where to fit them
Yeah, and the people who were just given fire are in utter awe at how he uses it
Raava is just the equivalent of three extra inventory slots LOL
And a battery. She's the source of the power up the state gives
These avatar Wan episodes are some of my favorite episodes across both series
I love the change in art style too, I'll never forget when these first came out
So you guys weren’t completely wrong about Raava giving Wan abilities for different elements, however what really happened was that only the different lion turtles gave elements and in the case of Wan, Raava acted like a bank for the currently unused elements for him, so when the time came that he needed to swap, she would pass thru him and take his current bending and replace it with the new one.
Definitely glad you guys this show a chance, wish others would too. It shouldn’t have and isn’t meant to be the same as The Last Airbender, which is peak of course but this show definitely grows on you. I remember when this first came out, was so excited. Was pretty young when The Last Air bender was on tv, remember asking my mom to stay up so I could watch the Eclipse episode and then the finale. The next show is definitely way over due
i watched it with out giving it a chance and i dont regret it. i dislike it
i would have rather have had the story of the first avatar instead of kora
theres nothing wrong with giving it a chance.... but what the show does with that chance just hurts
The art style change is probably the coolest part of these 2 episodes.
The show saying the name Raava like 30 times. Ange after the reaction: What was her name? Reeva?
hahah
I kind of agree with Carlie shipping wan and raava they’re so good together😔
They are connected together in the avatar circle!
It’s not like something will destroy off the Avatar circle and never reconnecting them again!
@@The_FallenKnightspoiler
I mean, Raava is still connected, and Korra is still the reincarnation of Wan. Losing access to the memories of the past lives doesn't change that fact.
@@AZDfoxNot really as the other avatar reincarnations refer to themselves as different individuals and even have different levels of powers as well. Hence, being one is for souls name sake only.
Both the Avatar origin story and artwork in these eps are brilliant
He was the first avatar, Carlie! He was number Wan!
Honestly this was just an amazing breath of fresh air when this aired because Season 2 was losing a lot of people, me included.
Unalaq went into the portal because Korra opened it for the first time in 10,000 years
This episode shows why if the avatar dies in the avatar state the avatar line no more exists. Did you realize?
Its finally here !!!!
You're correct Ange about budget and time limit. Also good on Carlie for noticing the animation change. Basically, Nickelodeon fucked them by telling them they weren't getting a 2nd season and then changing their minds at the last second but not giving them a good budget🙄 they had to use different animators than the 1st season BUT the original studio comes back for half this season and then the rest of the series.
In Last airbender they mentioned the Lion Turtle multiple times throughout the series.
What happened to season 2 dip in quality was Korra was only supposed to be one season but after seeing the success of season 1 they were picked up for a second season unfortunately a lot of the animators had already taken other projects so they had to rush another story with different writers and animators to get it out in the timeline Nickelodeon set.
17:12 i love the reaction
Also a lot of ppl don’t understand the lion turtles giving them the elements, as that’s all they do but see that wan got better when training with the spirit/ dragon so it doesn’t affect the law really as at some point the lion turtles stoped giving them the elements so it becomes a inherit from parents so watching the moon etc still teaches them how to use and master the elements, yes some point may not line up but as a whole it still makes sense
fun fact, avatar Wan comes from avatar One, which in Spanish would be Avatar Juan.
The way they talk about certain things and how they analyze it really gets me. I hope they react to Grave of the Fireflies soon.
The music in this show is incredible
THIS IS DEFINITELY PEAK KORRA. BEST ARC FOR ME
Am so exited that you reacted to 2 eps instead of 1 ❤❤
I personally thought the Lion Turtle sensed Wan’s destiny, or at least sensed his importance
When carlie said harmonica convention 😂hahah that killed me
We. Are. Bonded. Forever.
To realize that the first ever avatar died on the battlefield is crazy to me but also sad
These two episodes saved season 2 for me. Great reaction.
I will now call it "Harmonic Convention" moving forward. Thanks!
I think it’s cool that wan can only change element when raava passes through him and it seemed like he can only use one at a time but when they fuse he is able to use any at will and all together
pretty sure the airbender arrow is taken from the flying bisons right? i guess as history went on the knowledge on raava faded away so they dedicated the element to the bisons instead. makes me wonder, how does this fit with the lore from alta that bending comes from animals and the moon..? is it simply because too much time has passed so history changed?
edited: nvm the comments answered them for me😂
DAMN fighting that flying kite must be so cool
22:44 humans can't enter the spirit world with their physical body but only their spirits. Only the Avatar can do that because they are also part spirit.
No? Unalaq enters the spirit world with his body. Anyone can enter with their bodies if they use the portals. You enter without your body if you meditate.
@joelpelkonen6845 oh! I nearly forget the portal thing. Thanks for the information.
@agniswar3 no worries man, take care
the firebenders treating korra are the Fire Seiges , remember them in ATLA
This set of episodes are some of the best in the series, which is saying a lot considering that the next season is full of bangers.
Never thought I'd hear a woman say she hates cucumbers.
I think I also ship Raava and Wan - especially with their final dialogue with each other. THEY ACTUALLY FELT LIKE LOVERS BY THE END OF WAN'S LIFE AND HAS IT BEEN STATED IF WAN HAD A PARTNER OR SOMETHING? If not, Raava was his love and partner.
Arguably top 5 best episodes of legend of korra.
Im pretty sure the spirit oasis is actually the same one the fire sages submerge Korra in! Thousands of years of lava flow from the volcanic terrain of the fire nation islands would explain why it was in a cavern.
When Nickelodeon greenlit additional episodes, the creators broke them up into the final three seasons. At the time the studio that they normally worked with (Studio Mir) was working on another project (Boondocks) which requires much less effort to animate. Mir declined to work on Korra so the creators hired another studio (Studio Pierrot) who animated One Piece and Cowboy Bebop. Later Studio Mir decided to animate some of the final episodes from Season 2 and remained on through the entire series. The studio changes during this time (2012-2013) was a nightmare for all involved including the fans. I remember I had to wait over a year before Season 2 was released and it was because the creators were working with two studios and their schedules. So considering all the logistics the creators had to endure mainly at the hands of Nickelodeon, the episodes faired pretty well. The animation quality will return to form soon, so just hang in there. Awesome reaction!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
The "Avatar origins" episodes are like this season's redeeming episodes for me
I feel like Wans character d😊find chance go fast or drastically. From the beginning we can see his kindness when he stole the food from the rich and shared it with his friends & animals. He didn’t even eat his share after all that. He was always kind just poor & desperate
Carlie! You caaan't just ask if they used my man for firewood! 🤣💀
Loved it when Wan became a fully fledged avatar and punched Vaatu in the face with a great big slab of earth! Beginnings was the best of Season 2! Until I saw this, I was wondering where this season was going.
Before Invincible, Steven Yeun was the first avatar. Too bad he and J K Simmons didn’t have any scenes together in LoK
These are the only episodes of Season 2 I will rewatch.
Thank you for the video
Wan spent years with the spirits
Avatar Wan has blessed us with 2 episodes today
Hoo boy... Here we go...
Did you notice the island korra flew past at the end? Looked familiar 😂
Hey I think you mentioned in the discussion that the lore is based on books, and just want to make clear that no, thats not the case. Everything Avatar and Korra was show original.
A few years back some books started being released (2 for Kyoshi, 2 for Yangchen, and 1 so far for Roku) covering the lives of the previous Avatars.
I really liked the Kyoshi & Yangchen books, haven't read the Roku one yet. Much darker than the shows. But they didn't have any impact on either show since they came out later, and haven't become shows themselves.
my question is, if there are "dozens" of lion-turtles, are there ones that grant other elements, or are there multiple lion-turtles for each element? like the multiple air temples, and the north/south water tribe and such
After you finish the series, I highly encouraged you to watch "The Reniggings" series.
Woohoo!!!
I love the backstory of Avatar Wan
You guys gotta add the new dcu show creature commandos to the watch list
Probably the only important episodes in this whole sequel.
15:57 ngl I’m with Carlie on this one 😅 That’s some mad romantic undertones 🤣
8:13 ahhh I gotta remember that one. If ykyk 😭
So many things go against the lore explained in the last airbender.
The best episodes of the korra series
Wan seems to have started out as a mixture between Robin Hood and Aladdin.
