God game? Well, Black&White 1-2, obviously. It's janky af by today's standards (especially the first one), but it was a mesmerising journey back when it came out. Still two of those games I would kill to see appear on GOG.
Too bad they are pretty much fubar on modern OSs, so I guess that pretty much dooms any potential review here. :(
It's been a while since I played one but when I was younger I loved Black & White 1-2 a lot, I would play them hours on end, replay them many times and stay on levels much longer then I needed just to play on those levels and complete my villages and all the quests.
Black & White, and Populous: The Beginning.
Evil Genius was great and very similar to Dungeon Keeper. Played it tons of times over and over. Can't wait for the sequel.

I still think one of the most enjoyable parts of the games is being able to posses your own minions and roam around your own dungeon.
Damn, haven't heard the 'oooorrrr' sound as the imps claim a tile in ages, really hitting me in the nostalgia gland.
Dungeon Keeper 2 is the one game I always comes back to each year. And every year, I enjoy it as much as I did the last time.
But still, I find it hard saying DK2 is better than DK1. I just find DK2 as a more enjoyable experience.
God I miss the days when Bullfrog Productions were around. They always made exciting and interesting games.

@@sixmillionaccountssilenced6721 Yes. And cooler creatures. No boring dark knight. No boring dark angel. The horned reaper was much cooler as an agressive, regular creature. The temple was cooler. You could make the gods angry or please them.
I'm sad that DK2 servers were closed so many years ago as now it would of been fun to see some matches on youtube.

War for the Overworld is the Spiritual successor of Dungeon keeper
And is a fun game in it's own right

war for the overworld have the same achilles heels as dungeon keeper an dplay litterary the same. Another similar game would be the dungeons series which play around with both an dungeon as well as an overworld. They stacked a silly amount references in it though ...more or less to the same degree as magica whitch can be a detriment in some eyes.

Going from DK to DK2 was like Diablo 1 to Diablo 3. Dark and gritty to cartoonish and silly. They’re all good games don’t get me wrong, but there’s a big difference.

I play Dungeon Keeper 1 almost every christmas but it's always getting more complex to install with newer Windows, I have never played Dungeon Keeper 2 but I remember my brother owning it, now I have to play it.
Try dungeon keeper fx. A fan made mod to play old dk1 on modern pc !
I'd probably consider Dwarf Fortress as one of the most detailed god/management sim, yet it is damn difficult to get into for a novice due to the shear amount to remember and consider when creating civilisations. Still a great game to watch.
Horned Reaper from DKII is my most favourite monster bad guy of all times!

I preferred DK2. I thought all the changes were positive and overall there's just more variety of units and rooms.
1) i agree on Dungeon Keeper 1 being overall more atmospheric and "better looking" as a result of that...it's exactly the same story as in Diablo 1 VS Diablo 2; as much as we can debate the better game, Diablo 1 is still regarded as the one with the better atmosphere, and to me that is a huuuge selling point

Good review, though regarding Mana there are limits to it - you have to grab land (and reinforce walls) to increase production, there's upkeep for traps (and some for imps) and it takes longer to accumulate here. So overall I think it was a good change even if the more powerful spells in DK1 were fun to use.
Dungeon keeper 1 runs amazingly on new hardware with the keeperFX fan expansion installed and check out War for the overworld for more dungeon keeper style awesomeness.
Probably the one thing I never understood about this game was the elite unit thing. Did they actually expect anyone to figure those room layouts out on their own?
If you want to play more Dungeon Keeper you should try War for the Overworld, which is considered Dungeon Keeper 3 by many.
I used to play this game so often! I havent played dk1 sadly so i cant say how that was. But i really loved the comedic style this game had. It was just the right amount of goofy and evil. I never had to feel bad for conquering the world. Cause it was all just fun

As for my favorite god game, I really love a game called Reus from like...5 years ago? It's a good price on Steam and it combines the fun of a god game, with the awesomeness of giant monsters so...what's not to love?
The thing I was curious about is if the "look through the minion's eyes feature was any improved from the first game. It was a great idea that really didn't work well in the first game - my opinion having played it many, many years after its release. Granted, I was already playing Quake, Half-Life, Mechwarrior 2, and a bunch of other games in the late 90s, so I remember the quality.

I always liked DK1 better than 2, something in it felt like eating chocolate while playing.
I remember one of my friends in my youth saying that the first one was great (and new at the time) so I bought this as a random buy. No idea what to expect so I hope it's my kinda game...
Only played the first one. It was a new idea and very well done back in the day.
Have you played War For The Overworld? DKII's spiritual successor?
I had a number of problems with it, but it'd been so long since I played DKII that I couldn't tell if it was a step down or if the original had these issues and I'd just forgotten.
You often don't have any motivation to work efficiently. Without time limits, or without the enemy knowing where you are or whatever, you can mindlessly just dawdle time and wait for your army to go huge and then steamroll without strategy.
Not to mention the lightning spell was overpowered. I remember one level I was able to train my army up to a high level while barely involving them in actual combat because most enemies that came on my turf just got poofed.
Still play this to this day. Remember folks, your dungeon is damp, Install central heating! 😎

Probably should try War for the Overworld, it's considered the spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper.
You should definitely do Black & White, that's probably my favourite aside from Populous. Also B&W2 is similar to your analogy with the ice cream.

You know I'm glad I found this video. I agree with a lot of the criticism of DK2 and have been reworking the campaign to fix some of the issues. Namely the brightness and difficulty. I've remade all the campaign levels to be much more difficult so that strategy and micro-management are necessary to win. I've been wanting to find someone who is willing to try my remade version of the campaign and since you have played DK2 recently am wondering if you are interested in playing it.

I came here because DK & DK2 are on sale on Steam for $2.00 each until Mar 31, 2024. A bunch of other EA classic games are also on deep sale right now.
As much as I adore DK2, DK1 is superior and remains my favourite game of all time to this very day. I still play the original through at least once a year. There is no greater feeling than rushing an enemy dungeon with a possessed level 10 reaper and one shotting them before they could rally any sort of resistance .
Black and White by Lion Head 2001 ish is my favorite god game. Love your work keep it up!

I just replayed this game the past month and it's still great! The Dungeon Keeper series is definitely my favourite of this type of game, and I do prefer DK2 over DK1 mainly because I feel the game is so much smoother to play (being able to mark out large areas to dig at once not one by one, better UI, more fluid, etc). You're right though, they're both very similar, and if you like one, you'll probably like the other. I really need to get around to getting DK1 up and running on my PC and giving it another go as well...

This statement doesn't hold up anymore since recent release of full version of KeeperFX 1.0, which is anl open source rewrite of DK1 for modern hardware. Unlocked fps, removed limits on objects, hi resolution, bug fixes, new campaigns etc. I'm currently playing it and what a masterpiece. :DDD
I prefer Dungeon Keeper 1 because fortified walls are impenetrable. This means you can plan the level, quickly wall yourself and your gold in, and take all the time you need to prepare without worrying about random invasions ruining everything. I just played a Deeper Dungeons level with 2 keepers and lots of heroes wandering around, and I got the heroes to obliterate both keepers while I remained safe in my walls (I put imps through gaps, dug random dirt areas to drop onto, then fortified those gaps, closing the way.)
Yeah, but in parts of the original campaign (which is all I've played of DK1, though multiple times), even if you take especial care to wall yourself in properly, dwarves and tunnellers can just take like a minute or two to three and break your wall in. I think it's realm 16, which is one that I had to repeat a bunch of times to win through (I was in 2nd grade at the time, I believe). It was weird to me because all the game info told me that reinforcement stops assault so I can spend all my gold to get my army buffed and trained up + spells and traps etc before fighting them, but eventually after accepting that the heroes WILL break in before I can spend all the gold efficiently enough, I began to prioritize certain expenses in ways that let me beat them and take control of the map. Dungeon Keeper 1 really had a much more unique atmosphere in terms of visuals, sound and music. The way the voiceovers from Rival Keepers and Lords of the Land sounded had a lot of flavor and character to them. Also, units had more slots for abilities - Yes, I know DK2 abilities are supposed to be more impactful, but you had to be more skillful to use the kits of a creature while in possession of them - and that had a good yield in certain matchups and circumstances.
Black and white 1 and 2 was my favorite God game back in the day wish they would reboot it
Dungeons 2 and Dungeons 3 have nicely carved their own identity and niche in this field of games. the divide of overworld and underworld, the style and mix of management, trap setup and overworld RTS feels unique while still scratching that DK genre itch. the tone is pure parody however.

My biggest issue with DK2 is the absence of many iconic DK1 monsters.
I still miss dragons and hellhounds.

my brother got the game at launch and he had some issues with the game.
i'm thinking of getting it on steam and i'm just wondering that all.
lionhead's the movies, preferably with the expansion pack. i found it really charming and fun.
Whilst I love DK1 it is DK2 that I return to every once in a while. The reason for this is not because it is silly, it's too silly at times, or because it has better graphics but because DK2 is easier to acquire an overview of what's going on because you have a wider view accessible to you.
But I guess this is why you download those mod fixes for DK1 to improve playability.
They should remaster 1 and 2 (and bring to consoles) and make 3

Minesweeper is the best god game ever!
I'm a big Anno fanboi. It's more management than god game, but the graphics are gorgeous and the game play is addictive.
Dont mean to necro i really wanted to play this game and i bought the key on steam but it doesnt work like the cutscenes are broken and i really wanna play the game
I personally think that Dungeon Keeper 2 is a pale and weak shadow in comparison to it's predecessor.
Dungeon Keeper, the original game, was better in every sense really, maybe apart from a few convinences such as the ability to excevate multiple tiles, and build multiple tiles of a certain room at the same time. Also Dungeon Keeper 1 was rather challenging in regards to certain levels, whereas Dungeon Keeper 2 was a rather dull walk in the park in comparison.
I completed them both a few month's ago, when this summer started.

In DK1 I remember getting stuck at multiple levels and having to figure out how to beat them through efficiency. I only got stuck in 1 DK2 level for a short time, in comparison.

Exactly, and I think that therein lies the utter joyfulness of DK1. Having to rethink one's strategy multiple times, and given that it was such a beautiful game I certainly didn't mind replaying the game a few times. It is a fantastic game.
I'm very curious, did you run this on 98se or more modern hardware? I run the original 1.51 patch with a decrypter to remove the CD protection and then use dgvoodoo2 as a wrapper to get it stable on Windows 10. Did you use older hardware or run it on a modern OS? I always got audio glitches as well, something about the medium to high audio quality somehow magically losing the ability to play sound effects in succession. Case in point, slapping an imp and then clicking on the build bar will sometimes run over the sound effect whenever you're clicking on the build room icon. I'd say Dungeon Keeper 2 is probably one of the more complicated games to get running correctly without crashes even when compared to something like "Severance - Blade of Darkness" (literally a nightmare to get running).

How did you manage to install the game on a modern pc? I tried to install my old games, but it's not working one bit... I heard GOG has a version for sale, but i'm not sure if that site is to be trusted. And even if the game will work properly on Windows 10. How did you manage to and what would you advice to do? Just asking since i'm desperate to play them again...! Thanks.

Personally I think DK1 is the masterpiece that DK2 didn't top.
DK2 improved a few gameplay aspects, but it also became too cosmetically pampered, and the Horny became a cartooney travesty whose only redeeming factor was that he left a trail of fire.

My fav god game? Hmmm, never played many of these... I guess Majesty series, think these qualify. Very fun (and funny!) games. I think I liked Majesty more than its sequel that got too colorful and sweet for my taste.
