"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast" , this quote gave me chills and made me smile. It resonates with me and put a great formulation on something I aways thought. Thank you Don for this quote and for all of this video 🙏

"We are becoming low-productivity slaves to the notifications." This resonated so much with me. I love your tea philosophy so much; please accept my gratitude for your thoughts and the accomplishment of your being! I bow to you!

I have discovered attention thieves at work: they asked for help and I needed about 5-15 minutes to get back to what I was doing, which lowered my productivity immensely.
Then, I have asked the person asking for help to wait a couple of minutes, so I could finish my task.
I was astonished, that in 99% of cases they didn't require my help and I was simply wasting my attention.

Oh man this was such a great video!! Sorry that I'm adding comments to enflame the merchants pocketbags. This conversation put so much into context for me around my ADHD and honestly made me feel better about just saying my boundaries to people around my attention. "I only check emails for an hour at the beginning of the day and an hour at the end." Or, "Yes, I have big blocks of time on my calendar where it might look like I'm not working. This is my creativity time and I need to protect it. Sometimes I use it to make art, sometimes I use it to research and learn, or maybe I'm just thinking thoughts. But I need this time and it's important to me."

I came for tea information and received a kernel of philosophical truth about the universe and the human condition.
I myself, given my life’s attention, reflected on the quantum reality of collapsing a wave function by measuring or observing it while you spoke. I’ll remember this.
Very interesting…… to my focus. Thanks.
I’ll make some oolong and think about this before beginning my activities today. Maybe change what i’ll do during the day.

I wish you,and Celine, and your precious daughter a happiest new year!
I truly appreciate your words, regarding attention.
    This is rabbitt year.
When you run across a rabbit, what does it do?
    What do you do?
    Attention is paid,on both sides.
It stares at you,you stare at it,untiringly, respectfully, lovingly.
This is how rabbit teaches attention.
    ❤️

Don, thanks for this beautiful piece. As a mindfulness teacher, I'd have loved to have a conversation with you about this absolutely crucial subject. While I definitely agree with the importance of training directed, voluntary intention, I feel like a balance between internally and externally directed is necessary. Excessive internal attention can also be problematic (think self-absorption, self-consciousness, lack of a sense of safety and of interpersonal and natural connection, ...). In case you're interested, Andrew Huberman did a podcast on mindfulness and he talks extensively about interoceptive vs exteroceptive attention. Definitely worth a few bites of attention 😊
    Cheers and enjoy Switzerland!

Oh the irony of getting distracted several times while watching this video xD but certainly this was a useful video. I've found too from personal experience that tasks when focussed on exclusively take less time than you might expect. It's only when you adopt the multitasking work ethic that you suddenly end up working all 8 hours of 9-5.

A simple idea that allowed me to rethink my approach to work and life was that all time-management works on an assumption that time is the only thing limiting us and does not account that capabilities of our brain also have a limit.
I hope your ideas will help me to further transform my life for better.
    Happy new year!

I work as a therapist and a lot of these ideas ring very true. Very thoughtful Don - as usual. On this track Jonathan Crary's book 24/7 and Scorched Earth is interesting not just the topic but having to engage sustained thought process in the act of reading is an attention test. Drinking kick back champ and loving it :)

This blows my mind. I like this and your other recent 'chat' format on TCM. I think about 3-4 years ago, you had a podcast series which was enthralling, but now I can't find them. I only listened to 2 of them (I think) and I'm annoyed with myself for not bookmarking the page.

Inspiring and well presented. The chart helps to convey the idea. I will make time for meta attention and attention evaluation.
I would enjoy more content like this. Perhaps filosophical discussions with shorter tea reviews weaved in.

Very very interesting topic and video! I like to think about things like this and I have already come to the same or at least similar conclusions. It was nice to give the video as much attention as possible and, of course, to drink tea at the same time. I look forward to many more videos on this channel, whether about such topics or tea, they are always great! I wish you and your loved ones a nice evening and a nice time and I send greetings from Germany ✌️

my problem is that I hate it that productive is most of the time perceived as so important when In reality its like the poision for many poeple in our society. not the fact that productivity is bad but the look on it, the human perspective often missing the point. I really came to the conclusion that the daoism /taoism point of view was fitting my opinion on this quite good.
its better to focus/ or not focus on the task not on the outcome and the world is full with people obsessed of the outcome.
I for example have multiple wishes or you can call them "dreams" if you want, things I would like to do in the world before I am not here anymore (not alive / I am still young just saying).
One of these things is spreading my love for tea for example. I study japanology and now I got accepted to study abroad and my topic is the smybolism of tea in yasushi inoue work, "the death of the teamaster".
I am already a person that tries to optimize its environment and myself all the time and its just not even producitve at this point on.
It has always been one of my biggest challenges to find the balance between self optimizing constantly and staying the same just for the comfort of relaxation.
I managed to achieve things by trying it, not by wanting it. Thats my conclusion.
Pay attentions to your feelings more and let yourself feel allowed to be disappointed but worrying about achieving anything, thats what wont bring you either happiness or productivity.
I hope anybody can at least relate a little bit to what I said, keep your attention and intentions clear and I am sure many people can find a path to independence happiness no matter the time is ticking...

Hi Don, just wondering if you'll ever stock a small plain porcelain teapot around 100ml, perhaps even with one of Celines little designs on - like the gaiwans? I cannot find one anywhere. While I love my gaiwans, I also love tiny teapots, but the ones I've picked up are gaudy, and badly designed and made. I'll never be able to justify buying a clay pot, and even if I did, I'd be too scared to use it as I am a breaker. A 100ml teapot for around £10 would be amazing if you could do that 🙏 pretty please 😄 cheers.

On the estimate of the total amount of information every produced by humanity, I suspect a lot of that information is duplicated. After all, if I wanted to find out about philosophy I could google the wikipedia article for philosophy but also watch a lecture from a philosopher which might contain some of the same information mentioned in the article. In that sense, maybe there isn't actually as much unique information as we might think but it's up to us as students of life to make sure that we go to the best places for those tidbits of information we want to find out.

  • @Apollo440

In my opinion, you, as a channel creator, should "ride the wave" of shortened attention spans in order to add more viewers to your audience. That way people, who find you through short, snappy, stimulating videos, may have a chance to transfer to the longer, deeper and slower paced videos on your channel.
So basically what I am saying is, that you cannot win if you don't compete.
You have to make do with what the internet gives you, and right now that's people with the attention span of a goldfish.
Therefore, sadly, the choice between matching your video format (to what the user can digest) and not doing so, is a choice between staying and leaving this type of media.
