  • Before the legendary Curtiss P-40, there was its predecessor the radial engine P-36/ H-75 Hawk. Minus the power plant the basic shape to the P-40 design came from the P-36. Like the P-40, the P-36/H-75, the Hawk was an important early war Allied Fighter aircraft. First flying with the USAAC in 1938, The Hawk would go on to be used by a vast array of nations (From the USA, UK, South Africa, India, France, Finland, Iran, Thailand, China, Brazil, Peru and Argentina).
    The combat carrier of the P-36 began during the fall of France; a French H-75 hawk claimed the first allied kill of a Luftwaffe aircraft. During the Franco-Thai war (1940-1941) both combatants operated versions of the Hawk. The Finnish air force used the Hawk against the Soviets in 1940 & 1944. Where several of Finland’s top aces claimed most of their kills on the type.
    The Hawk also was operated by the Royal Airforce; the RAF hawks mainly saw action in the India-Burma theatre of war under both RAF and Royal Indian Air force colours. The South African Air force used the type against the Italian & Vichy French forces in the East African campaign.
    In the USA the P-36 was first flown by the 20th pursuit group in April 1938. The type was flown by most USAAC pursuit groups across the continental United States, the territories of Alaska and Hawaii, and the Panama Canal Zone. The USAAC Hawks had a bare metal finish with striking cowl colours & group insignia (like the one depicted in this video). But sadly even the USAAC hawks couldn’t escape combat.
    The most famous example of a US hawk in action was the daring exploits of Lt Phil Rasmussen. On the infamous morning of December 7th 1941, Lt Rasmussen was awoken by the attack on Pearl Harbour. Jumping out of his bed in his bright pink pyjamas with a .45 pistol at his side, Lt Rasmussen rushed to wheeler field. Along with the help a few ground crewmen, Rasmussen took off in Number 86 from the burning airfield and claimed one kill over a Japanese attacker.
    The AZ Model kit used in this video was the release with two RAF & One French. I ended up make in decals for a P-36A belonging to the 79th Pursuit Squadron, 20th Pursuit Group, Moffett Field, California circa 1939 to 1940. The decals where printed on Testors white & clear decal paper.
    EDITORS NOTE: In regards to footage in this video. It comes from footage of the USAAC P-36 Hawks, 35th pursuit group, Langley Field, Virginia ,circa 1939 ( footage in the Public Domain). Since the copy I had was largely silent I synchronized it up to the audio of the engines of a B-24 liberator. The intro music comes from a 1943, public domain WW2 US propaganda short. P-36 illustrations are used under fair use guidelines.

    In regards to ones who want to build a P-36 sadly there aren’t as many model kits on the market like the P-40. The most wildly available kits that are on offer currently are the 1/72 scale Mistercraft P-36/H-75 Hawk or Smer 1/72 P-36/H-75 kits. But those are subject to availability. The AZ model kit is a short run kit, so availability is hard to come by (I brought my kit from a trader at the 2018 IPMS Scale Model Expo, Wellington, NZ).
    There was a 1/48 kit by academy which was only a special release, or the old Monogram/ Revell kit; which are not in currently production, so keep an eye on E-Bay if your after those options. Here’s hoping a major manufacturer like Airfix might release a P-36 someday with plenty of Allied and colourful USAAC options (there are a lot of striking paint schemes with USAAC hawks).

    In regards to the desert airfield diorama I’m working on a separate tutorial video which will be posted in the near future. In the meantime, the base was made from an MDF board, with scribed lines to simulate concrete sections. The concrete was painted in various shades of grey (3 to 4 shades), then the desert section had sand glued on it with Mod Podge matte. 6mm static grass tuffs where glued to the dried sand. Hope you have enjoyed this video & hope you will like this channels first upcoming tutorial video.

    Wonderful source of inspiration to build mine!!! Right now I only owe four Monogram I had got in between the last twenty years, but will look for this one to "improve" my oldies a little and build the five in many versions. Thank you very much for sharing!!!

    very good work, the kit seems not better of old monogram one, wing and tail surfaces joints with fuselage needs putty and NACA flabels are not impressive , vote 6/10 (colonelpablo)

    Looks great !!! I just finished a P40 and I would like to try this one !! ( I don’t know do you make Tamiya paint works with brush 😅)

    • @ShuttleFactoryScaleModels
      @ShuttleFactoryScaleModels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! You can use Tamiya acrylic paints with a paint brush, just use a few drops of their paint retarded. it slows its drying time long enough to paint with. Just give it a few hours to dry between coats.
      I'm glad to hear that your keen to build a P-36. Its sad there are not many kits on the market of the P-36 like the P-40. You would have thought that Airfix would of release a kit of it, after their P-40 kits. The most widely available P-36 kits ATM are either the Mistercraft 1/72 scale and Smer 1/72 scale P-36/H-75 kits. Those kits you might have to go via an online retailer for.

      Shuttle Factory Yes I know I’ve built three different P-40 but Also this P-36 look nice to build thanks for the kits recommendation indeed is hard to find one and Thanks a lot with the advice for Tamiya paint I really appreciatte that.
      The real video secuences of the P-36 are a very nice touch for the video. 👍🏼

      @@adriancabrera3014 your more than welcome about the advice. I'm glad to be of some help. I glad you loved the P-36 footage of the USAAC flying the type in formation.
      That is cool you have made 3 different P-40's (hopefully in a RNZAF or RAAF paint scheme). In my case I've made a Royal Egyptian Air force P-40B/C and a P40E in the markings of the Aleutian Tigers. Both will have videos sometime soon!

    No airbrush?

    • @ShuttleFactoryScaleModels
      @ShuttleFactoryScaleModels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct I don't airbrush my models since I don't own one. Aside from being spray painted with primer, the final layers of paint are painted with a paint brush. Hope you enjoyed the video too :)

    You are very brave to make a video of such low skill build. Sorry, but only honest comment could push you to improve
