  • Pitch Alert: I sometimes tune my banjo down two steps - a whole tone - to BbFCG, to lower the tension and increase sustain for playing classical music. This happens to correspond with 392 pitch, not 440, and in Bach's day this pitch was quite popular. I think the tenor banjo can do a lot more than Irish and Jazz music, and as the tuning is the same as the cello, albeit at a higher octave - you can play all of his six cello suites on it. This studies book will help any "post-beginner" to prepare for playing Bach and other great composers. More videos to come. I teach students across the globe via Zoom. Let me know if interested. If you like what I do, why not "buy me a coffee" by making a donation to www.paypal.com... All donations go to help fund my free videos, research and websites - a sadly not-for-profit venture! Rob

Thank you for introducing me to Piatti! I play a mandocello, so it's always nice to find new cello pieces to study

Great. Should sound good on a mando!

Congrats to your new book! Got my copy today and am keen on studying Bachs flute sonata movements. Perhaps you should adress also the uke players who don’t know about playing in fifth tuning as you’ve done before, to reach more people? I am now thinking of getting myself a banjolele to ad to my little „zoo“! Keep picking!

It would be good to involve any 5ths-tuned instrument, but I am particularly focussed on reviving an interest in classical music from tenor-banjo players. I say “revive”, as most early methods included quite a bit of it. And I do encourage 5ths-tuned ukulele players to explore books for all 5ths-tuned instruments, but I can’t force them…😮

Rob, can you tell what is the best MODERN self study book for classical guitar?

Well, I haven't found what that agree wholeheartedly with, but I taught myself with Frederick Noad Volume 1. I don't use his technique - nails and arched wrist, rest strokes, etc - but the exercises and repertoire pieces are excellent.

@@RobMacKillop1, thank you.Never heard of this man before. I'm not a professional musician, so for me it is more important usefull etudes, choice of strings and fingers. And, if its interesting to you, in Russia, best, I think, school of classical guitar(best repertoire pieces and etudes for sure) is "Школа игры на шестиструнной гитаре" Агафошин П.С.
