The woman was private Malone's mother. That was her sons car that she held onto for so long and finally felt she needed to let it go. Or at least, that's what I've always thought.
I have not thought about this song in literal decades. It's not one that I remembered or that stuck with me. There were so many of these around that time that this one got lost in the shuffle for me. I recognized the title and remembered that it was kinda bittersweet when I saw this video but that's it. So imagine my surprise when the chorus hit and I immediately started singing along, word for word, for most of the rest of the song. The space that music occupies in our brains is an incredible thing.
This is what we Americans call a troubadour. It's what George Strait calls himself. It's the kind of music one man with his guitar can stroll around playing and singing, telling a story in verse.
I just saw that this dropped and, as someone who gets very emotional to certain songs, my first reflexive thought was “Oh no.” I found this song over a decade ago and, to this day, I’ve yet to make it through without crying. Hopefully I can do so this time, seeing as I haven’t watched the video yet.
Great reaction. With your unconventional reactions to various parts of this song is " refreshing ". Private Malone took the time to make this note in anticipation if he didn't come home from his deployment to fight in a war. He lets the person who would windup reading the note that they would always be riding with him. Then after a crash - private malone saves the person who had made this car his dream.
My 1st car was a 75’ Impala. We called it “The Boat” only had her for about a year before I traded her for a work truck about a week later I went to a monster truck show in Philadelphia at the Spectrum ( just dated myself) and BigFoot came out and crushed her!! AMAZING
Love this song. Always makes me tear up. You should also check out People are Crazy by Billy Currington if you haven't yet. A great feel good story by a great voice.
check out the song Last Letter Home by Thom Shepherd hes the the guy who wrote this song and the song Last Letter Home mentions what happened to Private Malone
Wow, it has been along time since I heard this song. Classic old school country storytelling. Even when this came out and it was popular, David was always an old fashion country music singer. Hearing this, It took me right back to the summer of 2001, I would’ve been 17 years old. I grew up on my families working farm, country music was almost always the background music of my life in those days. There was always a radio in the barn, in the garage, attached to the side of a tractor, etc. Always tuned to a local country station. My Grandfather actually told me numerous times when I was younger (and I believed him) that I couldn’t change the stations of the radios “because country music keeps the animals (cattle, sheep, and sometimes swine) calm and easier to work with”.
Always thought the woman who sold him the car was Private Malone's wife and she knew what the car was worth, but she sold it to him because she thought it was what Malone would have wanted. Seeing as this guy was a soldier as well and she's waited 30years for the right person. Any way it goes, always will be a beautiful song. R.I.P and thank you too all the "Private Malone's" that have been lost.
I love your reactions to country music, there are so many other artists and songs 8d love to see your reaction too. Craig Morgan, Travis trit. And so many more
This is my favorite song of all time. David Ball didn't write it, but sang it and recorded it and did a great job! Thom Shepherd thought it up and wrote it along with some help from some very talented people. He was an unknown back then but it really is his song. It's a long story it took a few years to get out there but when it did everyone loved it! Here's another long story to go with it, that I'll keep short. I have a red 1969 Camaro RS 350 I've had for 45 years, that's me and her in the thumbnail, in my younger day's. Still have her, in good shape too. I love country music and live there too lol. Had some horses back in the day, in the pasture and under the hood of THAT car. Have a son that was in the service too, he made it back OK. But that's why this song hits home with me! I'm kind of old now and not a lot to do. That's why I'll keep talking unless you stop me lol. I've always wanted to travel across the pond and visit you Britt's. Maybe some day I'll make it. We've been allies for years and always will be. I'm a history buff too. All the best to you from an old yank LOL. 😎
Always loved this song 😊 …now you need to listen another one about this great muscle car…The Corvette Song, by George Jones 😉 a funny song that you will love
The best part of a lot of country music (Especially the classic country) is the storytelling. Now it's very much bro country and a lot of it has gone the way of trying to just be catchy with a beat and seemingly random words. But the storytelling is what makes classic country interesting to listen to. You can check out Little Red Rodeo from Phil Vassar or My Old Man from Zac Brown Band for some other great storytelling. Brad Paisley has some beautiful ones too like She's Everything or George Strait's - I Got A Car.
Thom Shepard is the song writer. He is private malone riding shotgun in the car. Went to school with Thom in Virginia, we still keep in touch a couple times a year
I had a ‘75 Impala, 350 hp motor, midnight blue! She was beautiful! You could pitch a tent in the back seat, lay across the front without touching your head or feet on either door! Traded her for a Brand new Dodge Ram pickup for construction, about 1 1/2 week later I went to a Monster Truck show in Philly and there she sat! Then Bigfoot came out and smashed her into a giant paperweight! Best money I ever spent, on the car, not the truck show tickets! 😎🍻
David Ball is part a sub culture in country music called cowboy country and they take old poems before radio, and rodeo songs and sing them. Example are Michele Martin Murphy,Sons of the San Juanqine. Roy Rogers. Chis Ledux
Wow,great reaction. This shows the maturity You've grasped in the country section. When I 1st saw the clip I was thinking "ut oh,"Judd got another "Judd, what are you doing to me man?"out of you.Glad you liked it.
@GOTGames I grew up on country music and I was born in the 70s. Today’s country..... it’s called bro country and you barely hear any women singers. It all sounds the same. David Ball write and played real country music. It tells stories that you can picture in your head. Now it’s all beer, whiskey and loose women because we can’t be anything else. This is true country, the sound and his voice. The way the video gets sorted yellowed out or faded out like pictures do as they get older. Thank you so much for appreciating American Patriotism.... it may be in turmoil right now, but it will return as strong as ever.
A deeper meaning in this song is that the guy who bought the car not only knowingly ripped off Malone's widow, he also totaled Malone's dream car in the process. Yet Private Malone, in spirit, held no grudges or ill will. He saved the man because he was an American Soldier, and loyal to his country and those that he pledged to protect and sacrifice for.
... dixie chicks "travelin soldier" - live performance is best... or "top of the world", music video version is very cool .... just sayin 😊 or maybe "why havent i heard from you" by reba mcentire - the video is awesome but you cant go wrong with reba live... thats my 2 cents, well 3 cents i guess since there are 3 songs... ... very good reaction on this, but then I've yet to see a bad one... 😊 cool thing - i hadnt seen this pop up yet but I'd just made a comment on a reaction to something else, asking for this one... 4 videos later and this popped up 😂 instant gratification - 😂 ❤

Every time I see this, I cry. Such a beautiful story
You say it feels like a happy song but everytime I listen to it I break down and cry. I just think of The Tomb of The Unamed Soilder.
This is 1 of my all time favorite songs ever I literally get goosebumps when it hits the chorus everytime I listen to this song

And, as expected, did not survive the feels…
A song/video similar to this one in country style is Drive by Alan Jackson.
A good country song tells a story

Ball is what used to be called a Bard in Europe. For me it's a ghost story or guardian Angel.
