Let’s MAKE a Ghostface mask! A tutorial on making a Latex KNB scream mask!

- A long requested and long awaited video, this is a walk through of my process that I use to make my latex masks! Showing the process from sculpting, casting and running the latex blanks.
The materials I use are from Barnes casting and molding. Www.barnes.com.au
Liquid latex
Claymate oil based clay
White Hydrocal gypsum plaster
Plastidip rubberized spray can be purchased in Australia from Autobarn or Supercheap Auto stores.
Coreflute plastic sheeting can be purchased from bunnings.

Thanks so much man! I just finished my KNB mask I referenced this video a lot and it’s the first time I’ve ever sculpted anything or made a mold. You were right absolutely no mold release was needed. Thanks again!

Fantastic straightforward video. Well done! Tip for dwell casting - if you're going to let it dwell for multiple hours; putting a piece of cling film across your mold, making sure it touches the liquid latex, will ensure that layer of latex doesn't start to cure and cause lumps in the rest of your latex :)

Very nice indeed! Just a question, when demoulding the negative, is there a need for mould release?
Typically with plasticine and plaster, no. I’ve never needed it. I’ve heard of some people using a clear spray paint to seal their sculpts but I’ve never found it needed

What is your workspace like? I'm a makeup fx artist. But i havent gotten into the molding and casting phase yet. And really want to make masks. However i only live in an apartment. So do you work in a small place?
My workshop is a two car garage, so I’m very lucky to have a large enough space to do big projects. You can absolutely do stuff in small apartment spaces and I’ve done very much that in the past, however casting and moulding of full head masks can be very very messy and it’s easy for stuff to get out of hand
When you applied plasti dip how many hours or days did it take to dry? I'm thinking of making my own KNB mask.
It’s dry within an hour usually. It cures very quickly

whatever happened to this mold? it's probably one of the best KNB molds i've seen other than the original burkbench ones.
It’s still sitting on my workbench. I haven’t gotten far enough to pull a proper cast for myself that isn’t just a test cast

@DemoMeme nah I don’t really sell the pieces I make, it’s not something that I’ve thought about. I really just wanted one for myself and it was more fun to sculpt my own

What's the yellow thing your sculpting on with the picture in it?
The thing the picture is mounted to? It’s a piece of wood. The yellow you’re seeing is masking tape

It’s just taped to the block of wood with the masking tape. Simple as that

Did you use any kind of mold release for the latex and plaster casting? And for the clay and plaster If so what kind? Thanks!
Nope, in my experience no release agent is ever needed for latex plaster and plasticine
3:21 I love your approach to this method called “blocking” I tried something similar to a complex Stormtrooper helmet from Star Wars. But didn’t work out so much because of the complexity. For instance I’m trying to sculpt a rogue one version. Do you think I can revisit it since I abandoned it because of the complexities
You absolutely could! Stormtrooper helmets are a really complex series of shapes but by roughing it out and refining you could absolutely get there
@@TheCBStudioOfficialeven over a reference picture? It’s very hard. I notice the angles have to correlate with one another to form a complete helmet. Like from ever reference angle. Luckily the ghostface face is easier
@@TheCBStudioOfficialI like this video. I want to make 6inch scaled head sculpt of the ghostface mask out of liquid silicone but as a custom the slicone will be fragile and have to be more durable. I have the original 1996 screen used mask

Do you know if it's possible to take an existing Ghostface mask and use that in place of the clay sculpt? I want to clone mine 😂
Like casting an existing ghostface mask? It is definitely possible, it’s called recasting but it’s basically the exact same moulding process

What did you use to cut the eyes out? I have a blank that needs the eyes cut and I've never done it before
I have a small sharp pair of nail scissors that are perfect for cutting latex. Any department store or bargain store should have small scissors that will work great
The original mask was sculpted in WED CLAY which is water based and sculpted by an intern that was in the shop. I don’t know whatever happened to the mold
Yeah I’d love to know if it was still kicking around but any leads I’ve chased up have no idea either

I don’t have a link unfortunately, it’s just a cheap mask I had kicking around in the collection
Could you please tell me what I need to make the mask? Like what to buy?
Sure, you’ll need clay to make the sculpt with, you’ll have to estimate how much clay you need depending on what type of mask you wish to sculpt.
You’ll need plaster to make the mold, doesn’t have to be anything fancy, you can get by with plaster of Paris, you’ll just need enough to make at least a 2.5 cm/one inch thickness around your whole sculpt,
And you’ll need latex, again you’ll have to estimate depending on how thick you want your rubber mask to be, how big your mask is and what sort of latex you can find. Around one litre should be enough for most masks pretty safely.
Other stuff you’ll need will be sculpting tools, mixing cups, paints, fabric to sew a shroud if you’re making a scream style mask, thread to sew the shroud onto the latex, scissors to cut eye holes etc
@@TheCBStudioOfficial Thank you so much! Now after I get the negative mold, for how many days would you recommend to leave it for? (I'm planning to make a KNB mask, specifically the Casey chase scene. I might go with the normal Scream 1 mask but for now it's just KNB plans.)

Would the liquid latex you get from spirt Halloween work for making a mask like this? Or is it too thin for making masks
Honestly, I’ve never tried spirit’s liquid latex, it should work but it would take some experimenting I would think
@@TheCBStudioOfficial I think it might work but I’m just worried it’d be too thin cause that kind of latex is usually used for prosthetics and makeup
@richieboon1119 ultimately latex is latex, it may be thicker so you might have to brush layers in instead of dwelling it, which is still a valid way of making masks. I tend not to use that sort of store bought latex so I can’t say for sure really, but you’d definitely get a mask out of a mould, whether or not it’s spectacular quality is another issue entirely haha

Yes, they’re painted black first and then the centers are cut out and replaced with fabric?
