Might be worth checking out a TH-cam channel by Kaytlyn Amanda. She as American that now lives in Sydney. She has recently done a grocery, everyday essentials etc comparison between the two countries. Was surprised at how much cheaper Australia is.

You were seeing young locals and back-packers and so on, who have to get what they can, not a lot will cook for themselves. If you stay with your sister, and she cooks, it should be cheaper all around. She will have found out how to make foods she likes from what is available. Learn from her, You can get cheap, filling options in the supermarket, you can cook other recipes with instant noodles. Warm drinks in a box, and bottled water, are a bit cheaper at a supermarket, than buying cold drinks in the corner shop/fish shop etc. Just put a few in the fridge at a time.
For travel, look at the distance you want to go... (the bus takes 2 days from Brisbane to Cairns, the atherton tablelands is an hour or so west, still inside Queensland, not up at the top either.) look up fares on bus, train or plane. If that won't work look at a winnebago or camper van, they can be hired. It is cheaper if you are not alone. We drive on the left side of the road. You can leave everything in the cupboards, or the fridge though a bit small, cook in the van, and stay in caravan parks. My bro in law said having a pre-prepared lasagne (from the supermarket) cooking as he drove along, sent him a bit crazy. Ask if you can stay in local parking spaces, or if you will be moved on. local parks have barbeque facilities, usually a coin for a long cooking time, and toilet blocks, showers are less commonly found there. Back packers can get lonely planet guide books with the info needed to find what you need. Beaches have plenty of water to swim in, and public cold water showers to get the sand and salt off. Petrol (fuel, gas) stations have public loos, find out where you can shower? Most towns have a swimming pool, some with warm showers as well. A torch and candles can be helpful, though candles can be dangerous if out of control. (Foot) thongs are good for germ protection in public showers All the best.

Australia can be expensive, if you want to dine out in restaurants, stay in the best accommodation. The wages here are higher than most countries, visitors coming from lower income countries will find it more expensive. Everything in Australia is rising in prices but that’s worldwide at the moment.if you have people here stay with them and eat in the the affordable way

A lot of people think it is expensive here as a 71 yr old Aussie tradie that just retired I think this is a total misconception . Wages can be very high here . Tradies earn more than a lot of Uni graduates . We have tax incentives on investment properties , free medical and compulsory superannuation [ although that came too late for me ] So many things you need to way up to properly compare only when you live here long term you really know.

You have got to put into account mind the pun 😂 that these people are being interviewed in the city. Closer to the city the more it costs so to speak. Rent, meals either take away or restaurants. Fuel yes in some ways. Grocery shopping shouldn't really matter at supermarkets.
Got to think if your in the city their prices will be higher especially if it's where tourists or holiday people go.

I'd listen to your family who live in Aust. Not tourist.

Its NOT really expensive, compared to places like London etc. Sydney is more expensive than a smaller city such as Adelaide..
And if you have $USD you are getting about $1.20AUD for each US Dollar..
We have a $22.80 minimum wage, most are complaining with no real reference..

It is bearable IF you have a job here. Euro to Aus isn't so bad, so save them Euro bro.
If you can move over here for a working holiday then it will be great. You can work and enjoy the lifestyle.
Australia is expensive because (IMHO) we are a island away from everything. Getting products / parts over here costs a lot. Even if made here we pay well so it costs more. We don't exploit people for "cheaper goods" (generally / sorry Bali).

The USA is actually comparable if not more expensive then Australia at the moment. This is especially for fresh food and packaged items (cereal, canned goods, pasta etc) from the supermarket. Fuel (for car) is cheaper but not by a large margin....renting is comparable now too which is expensive in both countries but there are ways to lower this by staying with friends and family or a travel companion who wants to go too.
And if you're by yourself (this is a big one) don't rent or stay anywhere in or near the city in any capital in Australia...or even any large towns...always look for accommodation like you are looking for cheap accommodation in your own country (the further away...the cheaper it is.
Food can be cheaper by looking for sale items and finding fruit and vegetable stores for produce sometimes a third of the price, basic produce markets and a good way to get meat is by a wholesale butchers or even an Asian supermarket.

Some of these people being interviewed are from second and third world countries so our Aussie prices will be higher that their prices. You do not need to buy water in bottles in Australia. Our water is pure and can be drunk from the tap. Tourist places are always more expensive.

Its all relative. If you are working your wages more less cover the cost of l7ving. Not to say there arent people who are struggling on the breadline. But if you are a back packer on a limited budget and buying just about every meal , or a tourist, who isnt on a working visa, and you are staying in and travelling to tourist destinations then yes, it is expensive.

Australia is not expensive especially if you live with family that I know you have here and the food it all depend on what you buy I'm on a pension and my food cost 50 to 60 a fortnight so to me that's very cheap and when you go to a restaurant there's no tips involved so you save there as well the only thing I will say is the rent is dear yes I will say that but everything else especially hospitals doctors it's not like America so it free for me and maybe you as well so Australia is not expensive it's cheap by comparison

Just get your sister to send you our food catalogue she could take photos and send to you same for transportation and acco it will depend on your exchange rates if your close or better off otherwise you'll find it expensive as you'll get less Aussie dollar on exchange as this happens to Aussie's all the time why they mainly travel to Bali Indonesia areas as we get better exchange rates more bang for your buck America and Europe is expensive for us normally as we don't get as much for our money 💵
It was strange the bird said our food was expensive and not as good as most people the first comments are how good the food is
Have a look at site where people have travelled here most find transportation cheap as well and reliable but only in city's if wanting to go in countryside then more difficult and dearer as you'll need a car or tour bus

Not really, Australia is not even in top 10 most expensive country. You just need to avoid $$$ places, there are plenty of good $ or even $$ places that are very gentle to your wallet.
Edit: compare to Denmark, Australia is way cheaper (except housing).
