My sister is considered non verbal but her caregivers usually say non speaking. Because she has a specific sound for yes and another sound for no. But if you don't know her you wouldn't know if she is saying yes or no. So they usually say she is non speaking.
And the term you were looking for is expressive communication.

I’m following a little girl named Sawyer who has Sanfilippo Syndrome(childhood dementia)who is non-verbal due to the disease. She has a way cool talking device that she uses to communicate using only her eyes! ❤Her little brother has autism.

My daughter is very much like Abbie. We call her a "limited speaker" instead of non-verbal now.
Thank our Lord Abbie was born in this time frame. She is able to express her needs in a way that is understood. She can do so much and get the help she needs.

She talks in her way. You don’t always have to speak the way everyone else does. You are fantastic because you understand her language and expect her to “talk” to you. I love watching your relationship. I think she thought it was hilarious that you were asking to speak with sound! She was like “ that’s crazy talk, dad”. 😊
I get SO EXCITED for videos like this, it helps me so much with communication with our 13 year old non verbal teen. I learn best thru examples ❤ gives me extra ways to try new things. I had not thought of mimicking nor has any of his teachers suggest it to us. This I am going to try ❤
Abby is such a great kid! Verbal talking is not necessary. She is able to communicate and makes herself understood. I have heard her say 'NO' several times. Maybe try to teach her to use her device to call for mom or dad. She could hit mom and mom shows up asking what do you need
The word you were looking for is proprioceptive, it's the awareness we have of where the parts of us are in the surrounding environment. For example our feet on the ground, our legs moving in the air or in the water, etc. It probably helps Abbie to have some sensory input of where she is by leaning against things, like in her corner of the pool. Very hard to point the fingers at the exact body part spot though 🙂 Also, it's receptive and/or expressive communication. Love her new swimsuit, it's so grown up. Thanks for the video on language, even after following you all this time, it's always interesting and there's something to learn as Abbie's experience is so specific to her. (but then parts of that experience can help me as an educator with other young people).

I need your prayers my friends. I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer couple weeks ago after my heart attack last month. Ive to have a big surgery to get rid of the tumor some of the pancreas a lil of the small intestine and the bile duct from where i had the gallbladder removed yrs ago.

I loved Abby's excitement when you said her brother was home. Watching her run through the house looking for him and then finally going outside and seeing him was adorable. I was hoping she would run and hug him but she did the best she could to show him how happy she was.
I think the word you were looking for for “outgoing” communication is expressive language. Also, knowing where your body is in space and how it functions are proprioception and kinestetic senses.
Asa thank you for explaining Abbie’s hand stim towards the end of the video. I see her do it very often and wanted to know if she does it as a stim for a specific reason or anything. Now I know why she does it so thank you for this whole video.

I’ve always said she would make an awesome wrestler. My boys were state wrestlers and I think she would love it. My boys had several special needs kids. Some severely disabled. It was great to see the kids accept them as real members of their teams. All the typical kids were amazing with the kids

I feel like this was a day in MY life video! My son, named Asa, communicates much like Abby. He has some vocalizations, some signs and some words he’ll choose on his ACC device. He also needs that deep pressure touch. The problem we are old!!! He’s killing us with his tackles and “loves”. 😂
That no and yes thing is so interesting! The 1 year old I nanny definitely started shaking his head no before yes and when he did start with yes it was the most aggressive head nod ever lol
yeah, my son can talk. He can say words he can’ say sentences, but he does not have functional communication. He does use his AAC device, but we haven’t got all of his people on his support team to commit to doing that which is hard and he’s been having a lot of self injury behavior and it’s due to lack of communication and frustration and it’s hard when they have things they want to say, but can’t communicate them
His support team are there to support HIM get them on board with his communication requirements. Go to management if you have to, unless they are his speech therapist they don't get to decide.
Yeah, the one that doesn’t want to do. It is his slp in person, but his school slp does and his state support people do but for some reason this one slp doesn’t know a lot about AAC so I’m in the process of finding out another slp.
have you seen those videos where the babies are freaking out on that moving cactus that imitates whatever sound they make? i wonder if Abbie would react to that!
Proprioceptive - the body’s sense of awareness.
I’m autistic with two autistic daughters (12 & 5). Our 5 year old is non speaking though she’s hypervocal. We all have terrible proprioception. Run into walls, stub our toes, hit our hands in doorways, head hits things when we bend over.

Watching on the replay, abby is beautiful young lady. I love her progression, you can see she's trying and that's why i like her 😊., in my view, she doesn't need to speak - all that's needed is for her love ones and, ... well society at large to understand her. Why do individuals have to conform into the world around them, instead of them trying to meet our needs?, ab is a very special person, and everyone around her needs to see that.

The term you're thinking of is called proprioception. It basically is knowing where your body is in space. A neurotypical person with no health issues should be ableto close their eyes and touch their ears or their elbows but for some neurodivergent people or other medical issues can have a lot of difficulty with proprioception
I think Abbie comunicates very well and she definitely knows what you are saying 😀 She walked all the way out there to see Isaiah and then stood by the tree until he saw her 😂😂 that was so cute 🥰. That space suit 🤣🤣🤣 hilarious 🤣 and Nala whining about Isaiah leaving now thats communication 😂 🥰🥰

It's mental skills that deal with working memory, flexible thinking, and self control.
Now i’m curious, was there troubles with latching as a baby or choking when she started on solid foods? I guess my question is, did she have to learn those muscles movements as well?
I have autistic kiddos. And it bugs me when people don't understand what they mean by non verbal. So part of the diagnostic criteria is non verbal communication which is body language, nothing to do with voice. It's all about gestures.. like waving, eye contact etc. If they have enough of it or not etc.
Has Abbie ever requested a specific item or thing to do she really only did at JSA?
The word you were looking for Asa is proprioception, im hyper mobile especially in my shoulders and so if my arms are raised above my head i have a lack of proprioception because they can go way back behind my head way further than they’re used to.
So there is a disconnect between her brain and mouth?
It must be so because she can make all sounds but still she can't speak.

I've been watching them for a long time and I've seen a big development in her communication skills.
The use of her iPad develops year on year as they add new buttons. She also learns new modified signs. Recently "wrestle" and "magazine".
@@escott696 I meant the tangible goals with the speech pathologist. She does the oral exercises with Abbie, that works towards oral awareness. I wonder if they have a goal they are working towards. It is a rather technical question.

No, abbys brain is so busy it doesn't have time to concentrate on talking. Besides thankful in this era, she has other means to communicate with us.
I’m trying to learn more about autism. Is that what happens in all Autistic individuals? Both verbal and nonverbal? Is there a limit to how much they learn because their brain is processing everything that most of us tune out? I have so many questions.
Propio reception 🤗 that's the body movement. I can be so unaware of my body that pain is delayed after cutting or hurting my toe from kicking. Includes intro reception. I'm unaware of my body movements. Neurons in the brain problem. I'm a psychology nerd. I'm clumsy even after dancing for no early two decades. It's so frustrating for us Autistics. 🤗

I don't think she conceptually understands what the camera is for, but I have seen her express annoyance in general meaning her parents would know if she is bothered or not.
She doesn't understand the reason for the camera, but I've seen where she doesn't want be seen on camera and pushes it away or go hang out some place else.
She often watches the vlogs but not sure if she associates the camera with them

My son is considered non verbal but yet he does speak. He has certain words and has echolalia. When you ask him a question, he will just repeat you. He is hard to understand but as his mom, I know what he is saying. (for the most part lol)

Have you ever tried or thought of where they type to communicate. I know that would be a tremendous undertaking. Just wondered it that had ever crossed you path.
There is a documentary on TH-cam called Spellers that demonstrates using letterboards or typing to communicate....takes lots if training and practice but it is amazing to see.

Having watched for a few years and seen how far she’s come with communication gives me more hope that she’ll progress way more with it. Even if she doesn’t verbally speak words, to see her string together longer sentences on the iPad would be huge. Communication is so versatile and so is Ab 🥰 also Nala’s cattitude over her dad leaving was perfection lol

I did her say momma and okay plain as day but Asa said it was just a sound not a word. That doesn’t make sense.
A word is a deliberate sound made in context. Abbie occasionally makes sounds that we hear as words but she probably can't make them again and definitely not on demand in context.
🤦♀️. They don’t get it. Our kids don’t speak because many of them struggle with imitation and modeling. Charlotte can’t imitate actions, let alone words. For example: In feeding therapy, if we stick out our tongues (me, SLP, OT), Char struggles to understand what we want in order to reproduce it. But she will be in the supermarket sticking her tiny tongue out and clapping about it.
The hotest part of the day is between 10a.m.- 2p.m.. Also Wrestling is now a sport in the Olympics this year.

It really depends on the topic. In many ways she is very much a 19 year old but in other ways she’s infantile. Theres no set mental age number because it really depends on the topic.
Somebody I know is a highly functional autist and sometimes she is like an adult and sometimes like a child. Other people could think she wasn't intelligent, but she has an IQ of 122 @@fatheringautism
So if someone was trying to have a conversation with me I would think it was totally rude to not give them my attention or start trying to wrestle or just walk away in the middle of a conversation. Do they work on what is acceptable during a conversation because that's also learned?
Abby is not neurotypical, she clearly has special needs, so her actions are different to the average person. She doesn’t understand social edict, please do some research on how people on the Autism Spectrum are, before making uninformed comments
