The Sony a7c was my entry into the Sony ecosystem. Especially having access to a wide range of affordable third party lenses. The cost of Canon glass when I had the Canon RP was too prohibitive and adapting the EF glass made it too clunky to use on the daily. My a7c now comes with me everywhere, and because of that, I'm shooting much more often, which is the point of having the camera in the first place.

I use an A7C for all of my stills and video work and have been satisfied with it. Sure I want an FX3 but as a wise man once said, the A7C does 99% of what I need it to do 99% of the time. 😏

Have watched you on/off for about 2 years. You are the sage of the camera YT world, and the large subscriber YT camera folks should heed your words. They don't, and won't. Too busy 'specubating'. For those of us who grew up on film, shot full manual b/c that was the only thing, and worked our way up to today, we know that we can get good results without having the absolute top end in specs or device automation. I came to this video 2 years late, b/c I am trading in another system to focus on Sony. I like small gear, and a year using a RX100m7 and a ZV1m1 on the side of my other gear has lured me in. A7c may be the thing that I shoot next. Thanks, and I'm pretty sure you earned a new patron on Patreon today.

I went for a hike this weekend with my A7c and the new 24mm and 40mm lenses and really enjoyed it. It wasn't just that the combination was light, but also the new lenses have an on-lens aperture dial, which makes the UI much more effective - I didn't miss the front dial. That combination of minimal body and on-lens aperture dial seems to be part of Sony's new industrial design. I used to travel on business (remember that?) with it was easy to take along an APSC NEX6 (then A6000, A6300, A6500) and the 16mm/35mm lenses. This felt similarly portable but, thanks to the aperture dial, better UI and full frame etc.

Going on a hike, I take a 7C and a Tamron 17-28 f2. 8 And 24 mm and 40 mm sony are unnecessary. The difference in weight is 85 g. and the length is 5 cm. But ! This lens is much cheaper than two Sony lenses, more versatile in focal length and it does not need to be changed to another one. In 35 mm mode, it gives a focal length of 42 mm. Thereby replacing the lens with 40 mm. So you can think about whether it is worth paying very much for 85 g. and 5 cm.) And changing lenses back and forth is not the most convenient activity in nature, and even dust gets on the matrix. Good shots! )

Great perspective! I had and loved an A7iii for years. The form factor prevented me from bringing it out much for everyday capture opportunities. After trading it in and getting an A7c with a few different lenses I am creating all the time. I can take it with a small lens (kit lens or my new favorite the 20mm 1.8) everywhere. Each time I shoot I am improving my compositions and love the ability to be light and in the moment. I appreciate your perspective and insight on the benefits of this camera.

You know, there's something about New Yorkers that drive me crazy but endear me to them at the same time. This is a well thought out piece, and I hope people understand that practice is time so well spent. I look at the old photos that people put down because they don't have the contrast or oversharpening we see in current photos and marvel at the craft and artistry of the photographer. Those pictures speak louder and better (to me) than many an Instagram post. You're right. This is an underrated camera. And frankly, so is the A6600. Well done!

I took the dive and sold all my aps-c gear including my a6600 for a new a7C. Could not be happier. This camera is amazing. I pair it with 35mm f2.8 Zeiss, the 55mm f1.8 Zeiss or the new 35mm GM. All have fantastic results. This camera is much easier to use with these primes in REAL LIFE on the street or at a celebration. While I also have a Sony A7r3 to use for higher resolution, I find myself grabbing this camera first. I shoot jpeg in creative BW and Raw in the background fir color originals. It handles it all with amazing focusing speed. Happy owner here.

It's so easy to carry and the results are great. Once my 40mm 2.5 gets here with it's aperture ring, AF switch, and eye AF button this camera is going to be even more of a joy to carry. My photography journey started with RX1 and after so many years of indulgence, I still find it very hard to replace that camera in my bag. Having used a7c for a while, even if some of the modern glasses are statistically superior, I still look back to the mythical rendering of that old Zeiss.
Sony actually started the mirrorless trend in the exact right direction - extremely compact, superior lens, amazing sensor. Over the years they have to develop those less-extreme products to keep it profitable. But I’ll always miss the days when Sony deliver such a revolutionary product that is “at least five years ahead” of their competitors.

As someone who started cutting his photographic teeth on all-manual Canon AT-1 35mm SLR in the late summer of 1979, I too believe less is more. For the vast majority of pictures, I shoot using aperture-priority, so I do not need program-this and program-that buttons. Simplicity and ease of use always win over complexity. What I like in a camera is an effective focus-peaking system, excellent AF, excellent stabilization, plus sharp glass, and ease of use. Nothing else really matters much.

I love the discussion on design and simplicity. It is exactly why I love the RX1 series so much. I own a RX1R2 currently, but my favorite really was the original RX1. I didn't need that much resolution, and probably didn't even need that EVF. Just a nice sensor in a body built around a fantastic lens, with intuitive manual controls.
For me it's sad to see the RX1 series seemingly discontinued, but I think the A7C is Sony's answer to a modern RX1. I'll be getting one soon for the nice build and battery. I'd love to see a new RX1 with a newer design language and simplified, modernized UI though :3

The A6400 and A6600 also have unlimited recording by the way, I have a 6400 and have recorded for more than an hour. However it’s overheated in 10 minutes in my office before when I didn’t realize my computer was blowing it’s exhaust air directly at it lol
Anyways it also has a flip up screen, which does block the microphone, but $20 for a small rig relocator fixed that for me.

I laugh when I read comments from people who have never owned a camera debating whether they should get the A7riv or the A7 iv or just save up for the A1. It turned out that the A7C was my 'upgrade' from my A7iii and I came to that decision after the A7iv was released and could compare. I am delighted with the ease of use that comes with the smaller form factor and have quickly found workarounds for its shortcomings ( except maybe that EVF -usable but could be so much better!) I just enjoy picking it up and taking it with me and carrying it in a much smaller bag to boot; not something to be overlooked. I have rediscovered the simple joy of my smaller primes on it but also have been thrilled to discover that heavier glass somehow also feels fine. My 70-200 f.4 is at home on it and looks and handles "right." Take my order right now for the next iteration if Sony does listen and addresses the first gen shortcomings like that EVF and maybe throws in a double card slot and one more custom button and perhaps give us a few more megapixels for cropping. I don't find that I miss the front dial all that much.....

Good points. Canon is pushing RP and a newer version coming out for ~$800 for the same reasons. They are ditching APS-C as well. Not worth the extra investment for R&D and the glass lineup. M system was their top seller, and they have given up on that from the looks of it.

I enjoy your channel. A few months ago I picked up an A7C. It strikes a nice balance between the Z7II and Z50 I had been using prior to switching. A joystick and front dial would be really nice. The menu button is in a very odd location. Fewer buttons, but still more customizable than a Nikon Z body. Subject tracking is fantastic. I don't mind the EVF compared to the other compacts that don't even have one. I had tried the A7RII, A7RIII, and A7IV as well. Nikon still has the nicest JPG's of all the brands, IMO.
The A7C is especially nice with the Tamron 20-40 and 70-180 f2.8 zooms. This kit's price, weight, size, and performance is still ideal. It could use a firmware update. ;) I'm looking forward to the A7CII, and hopefully with a few more mp's. Cheers!

I have a GH5 and a Canon M6 Mark II that I use for video. Looking to add this camera to my collection because of the famous Sony autofocus and low light performance. I like the smaller form factors because they fit my Ronin-SC, one of the smaller gimbals for mirrorless. When using it for travel and spontaneity, you don't want to deal with too much complexity, otherwise it ruins the mood/moment. I'd rather focus on camera movements, narrative, etc. Simplicity is why some pro camera operators like the Black Magic 6K. You're correct in saying log, raw, etc. is too a big hassle for a one-person operation intended for social media. If you're making a movie, not likely you'll use anything under 20k, unless it's pre-prod proof of concept.

The initial unfair reviews were great for my budget as I bought the A7C brand new for $350 cheaper than the A7III. It's a great little camera for everyday shooting which is what I wanted it for. It's perhaps the Sony camera that I'm enjoying the most (I had A6000, A7, A7RII and A7III /sold them all) and sure its color science is better than previous models. First time I like Sony jpgs (never used them before) but now it's a whole different story. Now I shoot raw and and jpgs and many a time I just keep the jpg files (unthinkable with previous models).

With my 55mm f1.8 its a brilliant street setup, even after very cropping I can still get 2K resolution stills which is overkill for social media but oh so sweet for printing. 61mp turns primes into “after the fact zooms”

As a new model, the A7C is only on its first version. The few negatives are enough for me to not buy this first A7C, but I like the basic philosophy so much that I assume the A7C MK II or III will reduce those flaws enough to become my next main camera, especially for travel. Like the first M1 Macs, the first version of the A7C indicates that future versions have significant upside potential.

Hi! I moved from Panasonic G9/GX85 to the A7c with native lenses. My main reason for moving was when I shoot energetic shots of people, I simply don't have to worry about focus pulling. It is extremely reliable to AF (especially eye track!) in 4k. It is also still in the GX85 category in size for me. Unfortunately it lacks as good IBIS (let's be fricking honest, G9/GH5 are so far beyond the A7c IBIS it's not even funny), as well as 4k60 or 4k24 10bit. I've gotten around this limitation by leveraging the HLG3 profile and cranking the in-camera saturation to minimize corrupting during grading.
But you know what I really regret? The menus. Sony is incompetent in menu creation. They are bad, confusing, and illogical. They need to take a lesson from Panasonic.
Anyways. Overall, I really do love the A7c. The image quality is great. It's compact. It's beautiful. It has good battery life. It has low light. It was a good purchase, but we will regret the gold features of Panasonic cameras...

I am one of those who use little of the endless plethora of features and functions on any of our cameras. I want to use my digital cameras in much the same way as I used - and still (occasionally) use my trusty Olympus 35mm OM10. After all that little beauty served me well for more than three decades before I bought my first digital camera at Christmas 2012. My simple delight is in looking through the viewfinder (especially the optical version on my X100V) and seeing the entire world laid out before me for me to capture as I choose. Freezing each millisecond of time never ceases to astound me. I look forward to achieving this with the A7C...one day...

I have to say as Nikon shooter, I like what Sony has done here... put a 24MP FF sensor into a camera the size of the a6000. I wish Nikon had something like that (and that this point, doesn't even have to be a FF sensor). I think the a7c would make the perfect travel camera....All of the other full frame cameras (including Sony's own a7 series) take on more of an SLR appearance, but this one is different, and I think Sony has done something great here. That's a camera that if you added a small pancake lens, like a 28mm or something, I would take it everywhere with me (not so much with my other ML bodies or most ML bodies these days as they are too large to fit into a coat pocket).
