How to Mail Merge Excel to Word | Mail Merge Formatting Issues - Currency, Date & Percentages

    In this video I look at performing a mail merge where my contact list is in Excel and my mail merge document is in Microsoft Word. The mail merge wizard leads me through the steps to complete the merge for letters, emails, envelopes and labels.
    Formatting in merge fields can be an issue as the formatting applied in Excel doesn't carry over to Word. This video explains how to use mail merges switches to format date, time, percentage, currency and text merge fields.

    I am in the same boat with the comment below, I send several letters each Spring to my prepay lawncare customers. It was very frustrating I was changing multiple settings in excel and had no idea that word did not bring over the currency format. I cound not imagine editing each individual letter. I'm all thumbs when it comes to office work so for you to share this with guys like me lol! and many others is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi Chester, thanks for the formatting info. I have used mailing for ever and never had the issue of USA dates and currency until I up graded to office 365. Thanks again I was pulling my hair out trying to get the document right.

    Thanks, Chester. Great training video as always. However I have tried to do this multiple times in the past and I'm successful as you shown the 1st time but if I ever go back and want to use the template that I've saved it never seems to work again. Any suggestions?

    Hello,
    I have two different accounts in MS Outlook 365 I want to mail merge from a word file to one of the accounts.
    However, I made that account a default still sending from the other account which I don’t want. Can someone please help me with this?

    Thanks very much for this informative video. However, I have a problem here and that is the date that appears in my MS Word is not expressed in the Date format but is expressed as a whole number. I tried formating using the date format but not getting the desired result. Any idea to fix this would be very much appreciated. Cheers! Koni

    Great video. CTRL F9 doesn't produce the second brackets for me. Is there are alternative method?

    Hello, do you know if you enter the date in Excel as a full typed date example: March 25, 2023 is there a way to have that as your date in the word document? It seems I can't figure it out.

      I was wondering the same thing. In order to display a full date highlight the merge field for your date select Ctrl+F9 type \@ "MMMM dd yyyy" after your merge field name. If you would to include the day name type \@ "dddd, MMMM dd yyyy" after the merge field name. Hope this helps. Thanks.

    What if I want to round up numbers? For example in my excel spreadsheet, the number is expressed as $35,000 (millions rounded to thousands) and I need the message to say $35 million…?

    I have some problem in merging mails to create certificate, I have two date data 1. current date and 2. date of birth.
    in column excel apps, i set date format in Germany...
    but after i open ms word and start letter merge date my set date change to random number in ex 45009, 32512 even I change date language in word still same result.
    Previously I also followed your tips to add \@ "d MMMM yyyy"}
    But if I close the excel program the numbers become normal.
    Please help mee :(

    If you have the same person on multiple courses how do you make it so you only generate 1 letter and not 2

    How to fix the format of emails. When all the data and the e-mails are merged, the emails are no longer clickable on the Directory document. All the data is about Counties, Cities and contacts and emails. Then this document is used where they need to click the email to open the email message. On the spread sheet the links work, but on the merged document when you click, it does not work.

      Another Q- how do you know when to use the @ versus the # versus the F9 for the brace brackets? (Sorry for so many Q’s your video was amazing, I’m now trying to work out how to remember it 😂)

    That’s a pretty big deficiency that you’re not able to send the attachments as PDFs. I found a way to create individual PDFs, but then I have to mail them separately.
