What purpose do you have for using AI-generated images in your video? Generating these images is a drain on resources, it avoids paying actual artists, and is lazy. Aren't your words enough to tell your story?

Hi, thanks for writing with your thought-provoking questions.
      1. Aren't my words enough? Popular TH-camrs universally say that "B-roll" makes videos that people will watch. B-roll = added videos and stills that spare you from looking at me talking (the "A-roll") 100% of the time.
Many serious mental health professionals think their words are enough. They don't bother with video editing, lighting, sound quality, "B-roll," or anything else. They simply talk into a camera and post it on TH-cam. And no one knows they exist, because they have about 10 views per video. I'm still an amateur, and perhaps the two AI-generated stills in this video were unnecessary. But I see no point in spending (very roughly) 10 hours a week making TH-cam videos that no one will see. So I do pay attention to these things.
      2. Using AI-generated images drains resources, avoids paying actual artists, and is lazy. My occasional use of AI images to enhance enduring educational material pales in comparison to completely synthetic videos of cats cooking breakfast. In any case, the drain on resources mostly occurs in the creation of the model, not its use. The energy consumption for generating one AI image is comparable to charging about half a smartphone battery, approximately 0.011 kWh. With an estimated 34 million such images created daily, that's a lot in the aggregate. But for me personally, very little.
It's true that using AI images avoids paying actual artists. But paying an artist to illustrate my videos was never on the table. The alternative is pre-made clip art and stock footage, which I use a lot. I plan to continue using AI-generated images as part of the mix. E.g., you may not like the thumbnail image of the video I released today (1/4/25).
I'm not sure what you mean by lazy. Please share the weekly videos you make for free while running a psychiatric practice.
