Great list, John. I usually bring a 40-inch octabox on a stick and a big 5-in-1 reflector to use either as a scrim for harsh sunlight, reflector or a plain background if needed. LED light is a great tip, been thinking of buying one lately.
Love your channel, it's pure gold on the internet. Thanks for all your energy and time you are putting in. ♥

Love your videos John. Always concise and to the point.
I do most of the things you listed already, I tend to over prepare, but one thing I’ve done since watching your videos is purchase some Flatlay backgrounds. It’s not really a thing here at weddings, but I usually try to find a nice background when doing detail shots at the Bridal Prep, which happens to be one of my favourite parts of the wedding day.
So I bought some nice strong printed paper Flatlay backgrounds from Pixapro in the Uk, Im in Ireland, as the shipping on the company you mentioned would be crazy for me.
So I’m planning on doing a couple of Flatlay at my next wedding, which is a small Registry wedding where I’ll be doing Bridal prep. Hopefully I’ll get some cool Flatlay shots.
Thanks for what you do John 👍

On the subject of bringing water, if you hydrate well for the few days beforehand, it’ll help! Thanks for the great suggestions!

OOOOOOOOO. That’s a good point. I actually need to try that myself. I do tend to drink a fair bit of water on the norm but maybe focusing on it before a wedding will really help me get over the post wedding hangover.

This is an amazing check list. I really like the idea of using LED lights, I haven't used them so far but it's just a great tip and I will need to try them. Great stuff as always 👏🏻

They really come in handy when you don’t want to have to pull out a whole flash and take test shots and things. Really I mainly bring them for sparkler exits.

Definitely get a dual card slot camera, obviously. With that said, If you are shooting on a single-card slot then swap cards regularly. You want to spread the photos on multiple cards because the likelihood of a single card slot failing is higher than numerous card failures (basically zero % chance that ALL cards fail). When doing long shoots like weddings on my X-T20, I swapped my card every 1-1.5 hours. If one would ever fail, it wouldn't be a huge deal because I would have 6 other cards with photos throughout the day. It's not perfect and not a replacement for a proper camera with dual card slots, but it works. It has saved me before during a long corporate shoot I was on and while I lost some photos, I didn't lose all of them and I was able to deliver an acceptable gallery to the client.

I shoot on 2 single card slot cameras. And I feel like a gunslinger when I'm on a shoot to make sure something is caught in any given moment (at different focal lengths of course). But I change cards A LOT! Only upside is I can use smaller cards. 32 or 64gb cards are much cheaper than 256gb cards!

i selled my 28-75 2.8 and 75-180 2.8 for a 35-150 2-2.8 so now no change needed, most time i have a godox v1 with magsphere on it - for off camera flash a godox ad 200 pro. I need no straps and so on i have a belt with a Pgytech beetle camera clip - it holds the complete camera with lens and flash on camera. As Backup in my car a camera with a 50mm 1.4 and a 85mm 1.8. Buisness cards always with me :) and bottle of water in the car (most of the time its warm after get into the car again :)

Hi John, thank you for your great videos. A quick question do you find the faces a bit skinny and distorted by using a 35mm lens. Many thanks

I always have two bodies and use zooms/primes interchangeably depending on the situation.
Primes for portrait and low light. Zooms for less predictable moments and ceremonies.

What do you think about bringing a book? Maybe it's a French thing, but a wedding meal can last a long time, and there are only a few photo opportunities during that time, as no one looks good when eating. And doomscrolling on your phone gets tiring after a while.

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Very true. I normally don’t get that long of a break during meal time between eating myself, but I could totally see it. Generally I’m getting 30-40 minutes at most so generally I’m eating real quick and taking a break before putting the cameras back on.
