I know im going to sound like a broken record when i say this, but everybody stop comparing this to Wicked!!!! I'm probably one of the biggest Wicked fans out there, but that doesn't mean I can't watch this the same way. I cheer when the Witch melts, and at the same time I cheer during Defying Gravity. There is room for more than one musical in OZ people.
Saw the show today, and once again Hannah Waddingham produces a first class performance!!! I really recommend people go and see this production, it's visually AMAZING, and has great performances from all of the cast!!!
I love Wicked and I adore Idina Menzel, but people need to quit comparing this to Wicked. Hannah's portrayal captures the classic evil vibe that Margaret Hamilton perfected. The bony, angular face, and her expressions are perfect. She plays a great Wicked Witch of the West. Idina is a perfect Elphaba. Leave it at that.
ok I am more of an Elphaba fan but I love the way they did this for Wizard of Oz she sounds like Margaret Hamilton. It is perfect...I will admit that if it wasnt for wicked the wizard of oz would be completely off my radar but I still really like this. Perfect fit for THIS story.
"Wizard of Oz" is one of the best Musicals I have ever seen and Hannah did an awesome job! :o) It brought me back to my childhood - it's one of my favourite movies!
Its also only in the musical of Wicked, while the book is about how she BECOMES evil. So that makes the fact that people cannot separate these wholly different works even more ridiculous.
This is why things shouldn't be open domain. All I see is fans arguing over whether Wicked is a relevant story or that Wicked makes Elphaba look like a saint. I'm here to tell you guys, Wicked is relevant and so is the character. I love the Wizard of Oz and always will. But things and people are not always what they seem. Elphaba is not a perfect character just like Glinda isn't perfect either. The whole point of Wicked was how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West.
Hannah is such a great wicked witch of the west, i really want to see her and Michael Crawford and Daniel, the dress on Hannah is so grand and her wig well it may be different to other productions of the wizard of oz who have stuck to the original costume designs, but these work, its nice to see a little creativity in this production rather than sticking completely to the original story, i know they have to keep enough to live up to the original but there has to be some change. great video :)
..... 2:21 .....XD DONE SO DONE! I CANT BREATH! CONGRATS HANNAH! YOUVE OFFICIALLY MADE THE WICKED WITCH MY FAV CHARACTER!!! although i always had a soft spot for elphaba
I agree I enjoy Wicked very much so and love it to pieces, but I still also love the Wizard of Oz movie, have not seen anything except of this from the movie, I enjoy both versions, either way there is something to enjoy, so can we all just be happy before the house drops on us?!
I am SO EXCITED! I am going to see it with friend on Tuesday (30th) for the first time - wanted to see the uber talented H.W before she finishes on 4th Sept!! Seriously can not wait, if this is anything to go by :D
it was a bit weird because i was watching a behind the scenes of wicked and they were saying how they made sure that they never went against the wizard of oz movie but then in the movie there was the wicked witch throwing fire at the scarecrow (fiyero!) haha
Oh. My. Gosh. Andrew Lloyd Webber. Wizard of Oz. I have not heard about this til tonight. This is amazing. Words cannot describe how amazed I am at this. I did a version of Wizard of Oz for Community Theater....and I thought this was that...but no. This is above and beyond that. I am impressed and amazed.
Idk why people are comparing and contrasting Wicked and this. For a start, they are different shows. Secondly, the whole point of Wicked is to show how the witch came to be so angry and ruthless. Wicked (as far as I can see) never claims that she is innocent and lovely ... she actually does lose her head at the end, and that's where this part would come in (if it was all fitted together). But all that's irrelevant. They are two shows guys! Get over it! I love Wicked but I can't wait to see this!
@Liveactingforever From what I know, they do not have that song in the show...which makes no sense because Hannah's song includes "We all like to dance...you'll dance till your very last gasp..." people unaware of the cut number would be completely in the dark about what the hell she's saying.
@pjtheatreproductions to be honest, I think it goes rather well with the story line. She's singing about wanting the ruby slippers which is why the witch is after Dorothy lol
I'm doing this musical for this local theater at my town, and I really want this part. Although I'm only in middle school and high schooler's are what i'm up against, but I'm really good. Im ALL nervous after watching this, seeing that it's a bigger part than what the movie (which is all I've ever seen of this) portrays her.
I Love the Wizard of Oz that is so much that i want to build an Oz in Kansas & Orlando theme park called the Wonderful World of Oz theme park resorts which was 1st abandoned in late 1998 but i found a way to make it work
Okay this comment makes me so upset. You are obviously not in musical theatre. NOTHING makes me angrier than people who try to make their Wicked Witch "Elphabay". I absolutely ADORE Wicked and Elphaba is, in fact, one of my dream roles. However, Wizard Of Oz and Wicked are COMPLETELY different musicals and it seems that people are truly forgetting the Wicked Witch's true character due to Wicked. While Elphaba is misunderstood, the Wicked Witch is a truly evil woman. Keep in mind the differences.
I doubt that your school will have this song in their play, I don't think this version is being performed anywhere other than London's West End right now...In traditional stagings of the play the Witch doesn't get any songs (as the only song not in the movie used is the jitterbug).
i cant believe how good this new song sounds, it should have been in the movie. Really think this will be good now!!! when tells the doll to dance was great!!!
Someone pointed it out but this son in additon to setting up the Jitterbug references the Hans Christian Anderson story "the Red Shoes". I'm pretty sure Baum would have hated that.
@pjtheatreproductions I agree. If this were an original production of 'The Wizard of Oz' I wouldn't mind something so out of character, but it's supposed to be the MGM Oz, going so far as to use the same music, so there should be more respect to the original.
@omnigeek13 In this version of Oz, the shoes may have more than just the power to take people places quickly. They may grant almost any wish, and they did shock the Witch when she tried to take them. The Witch may not even really be sure of their power, as well. But the witch in the original book wanted them, maybe the Witch would be able to travel into the Emerald City in three steps and take over?
@pgoodwin230282 I don't know I try to ignore Wicked when looking at something based on the movie or based on the books... There are so many great oz projects that have nothing to do with Wicked and looking at one interpretation of the characters is pretty limiting. I myself am working on an Oz novel more in line with Baum, though a bit darker... and sometimes it feels like it's impossible to find a niche between MGM and Maguire.
question: in the original novel, wasnt the slippers primary powers the power to take anyone who wore them anywhere they wanted in three steps? I could have sworn i heard that somewhere....if thats so, im not sure why she really needs them
I know im going to sound like a broken record when i say this, but everybody stop comparing this to Wicked!!!! I'm probably one of the biggest Wicked fans out there, but that doesn't mean I can't watch this the same way. I cheer when the Witch melts, and at the same time I cheer during Defying Gravity. You seem to forget Glinda's remark that only bad witches are ugly. Glinda is a witch, and she's beautiful.
Love it! She has such a strong voice, and she fits the role so well!
Amazing. I've never heard of Hannah Waddingham before seeing this video, but now, I am a HUGE fan. She's phenomenal. This is done so well.
"Enjoy your dance my pretty" That bit made me laugh, she sounded so demented! lol
what has happened to elphaba's beautiful hair!? XD lol
"and red always suited me best"
"but most of all... I WANT MY SLIPPERS!!"
love Hannah!:D
When I went to see this she was amaaaazing!! So talented, my favourite character in the musical :) absolutely loved it!
Saw the show today, and once again Hannah Waddingham produces a first class performance!!! I really recommend people go and see this production, it's visually AMAZING, and has great performances from all of the cast!!!

"Wizard of Oz" is one of the best Musicals I have ever seen and Hannah did an awesome job! :o) It brought me back to my childhood - it's one of my favourite movies!
She does an amazing job of showing the insanity of evil XD
It's so stupidly hysterical! LOVE IT!!
Amazing... Wonderful lyrics, Wonderful Acting , Wonderful singing and wondeful music ....urgh just breathtaking
is this the only song the witch sings in the musical?
Its also only in the musical of Wicked, while the book is about how she BECOMES evil. So that makes the fact that people cannot separate these wholly different works even more ridiculous.
Hannah Waddingham is amazing - one of my role models x
Red has always suited you best?...Umm,no. Pink goes good with green.
sadly yes :(... but at least Webber wrote a song in for her. the witch really diserves to have one
she sang this at the Whats On Stage Awards...BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE AS ALWAYS!
In a theatre though you would not be able to notice, its just the video uses closups which reveal these small details.
This is why things shouldn't be open domain. All I see is fans arguing over whether Wicked is a relevant story or that Wicked makes Elphaba look like a saint. Elphaba is not a perfect character just like Glinda isn't perfect either. The whole point of Wicked was how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West.
exactly! wicked does show her descent into evilness very well and people need to remember that!
She's good she reminds me of Margret Hamilton the original Wicked Witch of the West!! :D
She looks so different!!!
all calms and collected then I WANT MY SLIPPERS! hahaha
I sung this song when I was audtioning for a part in a pantomime
Looooool funny how she saids "I want her sleppers!!!!"
I'm travelling down to London to see this on Wednesday, can't wait :D
That was AMAZING!!!
Hannah is such a great wicked witch of the west, i really want to see her and Michael Crawford and Daniel, the dress on Hannah is so grand and her wig well it may be different to other productions of the wizard of oz who have stuck to the original costume designs, but these work, its nice to see a little creativity in this production rather than sticking completely to the original story, i know they have to keep enough to live up to the original but there has to be some change.
great video :)
it was awesome to see in london palladium *_*
Hannah is proper amazing!!xx
I want to see this show!
..... 2:21 .....XD DONE SO DONE! I CANT BREATH! CONGRATS HANNAH! YOUVE OFFICIALLY MADE THE WICKED WITCH MY FAV CHARACTER!!! although i always had a soft spot for elphaba
I LOVE IT TOO!!
fab fab fab! i love the witch!

I agree I enjoy Wicked very much so and love it to pieces, but I still also love the Wizard of Oz movie, have not seen anything except of this from the movie, I enjoy both versions, either way there is something to enjoy, so can we all just be happy before the house drops on us?!

@HowBrightWeShineDude I like when Hanna sings and when the orchestra plays. :)
it was a bit weird because i was watching a behind the scenes of wicked and they were saying how they made sure that they never went against the wizard of oz movie but then in the movie there was the wicked witch throwing fire at the scarecrow (fiyero!) haha

My school is singing this song in the Wiz of Oz play tomorrow
Idk why people are comparing and contrasting Wicked and this. For a start, they are different shows. Secondly, the whole point of Wicked is to show how the witch came to be so angry and ruthless. They used a rubber cap instead of a lace. And they have the microphone go under the wig which shows a little bit of the line.
I saw this last night, I thought it was fantastic! Hannah Waddingham was so funny as thw Wicked Witch! =P I met her afterwards, she's so lovely!
cannot wait to see this!
this song is awesomeee!
@Liveactingforever From what I know, they do not have that song in the show...which makes no sense because Hannah's song includes "We all like to dance...you'll dance till your very last gasp..." people unaware of the cut number would be completely in the dark about what the hell she's saying.
i actually love this song!!!
wow she is fantastic!
@pjtheatreproductions to be honest, I think it goes rather well with the story line. She's singing about wanting the ruby slippers which is why the witch is after Dorothy lol
I WANT MY SLIPPERS!!!!!

Thank you for posting this... If there's just the slightest possibility, please, do post more :)))
WOW amazing!!!
i totally love the wizard of oz

I Love the Wizard of Oz that is so much that i want to build an Oz in Kansas & Orlando theme park called the Wonderful World of Oz theme park resorts which was 1st abandoned in late 1998 but i found a way to make it work
she did a great version of the wicked witch!!!!
2:18 I WANT MY SLPPERS!!!
AMAZING! I really want to play this part!
Bravo! I'm auditioning for this part tonight. So this helped. Thanks and have a good day.
Haha.....Love that part
@theatrefreak3 Yes. This was in rehearsals time anyways. The wig has been tightened and cut so it looks ifne now anyways. THE WIG IS AMAZING!
your voie is great
it just frustrates me when i can see the wig line on the actress' face
Brilliant in every way!! This show looks and sounds fantastic!! Please post more!!
amazing! ADORE IT!!!!!!!
The makeup is fantastic! :D
In the original book, the witch wasn't even green, and had one eye. That should be proof enough that Wicked isn't canonical.
Such a flipping good voice. She was so good. 3rd august :) x
@greeeeeg2 i agree..they cut king of the forrest from the show and that is a song that audience were gonna idendify with
UUUM...........WOW!
@fairgrounddiva Shes an English Actress, putting the American accent on :-)
I get what you're saying. I think it's just a matter of perspective. (Dorothy's perception v. the Witch's)
i have to sing this song because im the witch in a play
Okay this comment makes me so upset. You are obviously not in musical theatre. NOTHING makes me angrier than people who try to make their Wicked Witch "Elphabay". @FrankNFurter1000 i know what you mean .but iam happy that wicked was written since it is an amazing piece of music .
could you post just the bad guy parts please
if you look on utube some people have managed to slip the song into there school musicals :)
@EntertainmentAddams Not sure, but you can download the soundtrack on itunes :)
i cant believe how good this new song sounds, it should have been in the movie. Really think this will be good now!!! when tells the doll to dance was great!!!

Amazing!!!! This Musical has to come to Germany ♥
@sophiels2 I saw it is was great she is a really good singer!!
Wow.....Hannah Waddingham looks a lot like Margaret Hamilton here!!!!

@dramakinghull Right! Both Glinda and the Witch of the West should have their hats from the movie and the books!
Nice :D
i love Wicked and i'm trying to picture her as Elphaba, pairing it with Wicked and it's soooo peculiar, isn't it?
@omnigeek13 In this version of Oz, the shoes may have more than just the power to take people places quickly. They may grant almost any wish, and they did shock the Witch when she tried to take them. The Witch may not even really be sure of their power, as well. @EntertainmentAddams its being released 4th of may :)
I'm waching this coz wizard of oz is our school play and I'm the which
A Proper Wicked Witch!!!!
@MisterCrolla And plus, the slippers wouldn't come off, and she was going to give them back if the witch hurt Toto.
@pgoodwin230282 I don't know I try to ignore Wicked when looking at something based on the movie or based on the books...
