  • Wondering how to reach Tungnath-Chandrashila from Delhi?
Hey guys, I am happy to share my journey from Delhi to Tungnath (Tritiya Kedar) via Devprayag and Dhari Devi Mandir in Sri Nagar, Uttarakhand.
Tungnath trek starts from Chopta, a small village in Uttarakhand.
To reach Chopta from Delhi you can opt for one of the options mentioned below:
    1) Cab: Delhi - Chopta - Delhi (Via Devprayag, Dhari Devi & Ukhimath)
Cost: INR 15800/- to 2000/- approximately
    2) Delhi - Haridwar Train Cost: INR 400/- to 700/- approximately
    OR
Delhi - Haridwar/Rishikesh Bus Cost: INR 400/- to 700/- approximately
From Haridwar/Rishikesh ISBT get on a roadways bus to Rudraprayag.
Cost: INR 250/- to 300/- approximately
From Rudraprayag get on a bus/sharing taxi to Ukhimath.
Cost: INR 300/- to 500/- approximately
From Ukhimath get a sharing taxi to Chopta.
Cost: INR 300/- to 400/- approximately
    (For return, follow this vice-versa)
    3) Drive through your personal vehicle (Bike/Car).
Cost: INR 4500/- to 6000/- (Fuel + Maintenance)
You can either book your hotel online or reach there and find a suitable place for you. You can either stay in Sari village, Chopta village, or a little more quiet hamlet like Bhulkan (1 km from Chopta). If you want to stay at the top you can try your luck at the hotels near Tungnath temple.
Till Sari village, you will get the mobile tower, but if you plan your stay in Chopta/Bhulkan/Tungnath the chances of getting a mobile network get bleak. Untouched by pollution, Chopta/Bhulkan/Tungnath is still running on solar power.
The hotel/tent will cost you around Rs.1000/- to 4000/- (depending on the facilities provided)
Pro tip: Start your trek as early as possible.
Chopta to Tungnath Trek - 4 Km aprox.
Tungnath to Chandrashila Trek - 1.5 Km aprox.
Ascend & Descend Time: 5-7 Hrs
Will you get access to water during the trek?
No natural resource of water, but there are a few shops that are open during the months of (May-October). But carry 1 water bottle with you before starting the trek.
Will you get access to food during the trek?
Yes, during the summer months the shops offer Maggi, Parathas, Daal-Chawal, and Chai. You may find a shop after every 2 km. But still carry, chocolates and dry fruits with you for instant energy.
What should you pack for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek during the summer months?
Always pack light. You will get bamboo sticks from Chopta for the trek.
If you have a trekking stick, try carrying that.
Pack cotton t-shirts, comfy lowers, and a warm waterproof jacket.
The temperatures can reach 3-4 degrees, even in summer.
Make sure, you have good quality trekking shoes.
Can I do the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek in the winter months?
Yes, it's a bit riskier. But, I personally have done that. It's very important to start the trek early, you might get a lot of snow there, so the trekking shoes must be of great quality. You might require spikes/chains for shoes to complete the snow trek. Try starting early, so that you get minimum black ice. If there's snow, try walking through fresh snow as much as possible.
Note: During winter months, Tungnath Kapat is closed, and so are the shops.
You will need to plan and carry your water/food for instant energy during the trek. If you're trying to reach Chopta in car/bike and there's snow --- I would suggest you to stay prepared with required gears like wheel chains.
What's the view from Chandrashila Top?
You get the magnificent views of some of the highest peaks of India.
Nanda Devi peak (2nd Highest in India)
    Kedar Peak
    Trishul Peak
Is there any permit required to do the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek?
As of June 2024, there's no permit required. If you're going via cab/personal vehicle they may ask you for the Char Dham yatra registration certificate at the check-post. As to reach Chopta you cross a similar path. But on showing your hotel booking, there shall be no further hassles.
How many days are required to cover Delhi-Tungnath round trip?
You will be able to cover this over a long weekend. Start on Friday Night and be back by Monday Night.
