  • How do researchers from across the country use NCSA's supercomputers for astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and a host of other challenges?

    In the beginning, it is a steep learning curve. You don't need to remember all the commands and the options to each commands, but it is required that you first learn the overall system structure, the concepts (e.g. resources of different types can be accessed as a file), and become comfortable with reading the manpages. When the language used in a manpage assumes prior knowledge and you are thrown off by it, google the terminologies.

    When I first heard about supercomputers I thought they were just normal computers that load you google searches in 0.5 Mille seconds and can run GTA 5 on the highest settings in more than 60 FPS. :(

      @MrJackZhan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually a supercomputer probably can's run games much better than a regular gaming PC. Without special optimization you can only utilize at most one node of the supercomputer, which is essentially a high-end PC.

      Ik I'm extremely extremely extremely late but a supercomputer can probably run GTA on like 50,000 fps

    • @ahmetmutlu348
      @ahmetmutlu348 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can, but graphics cards wont sell that way. And it requires lots of rewring lots of code from the beginning, and people are lazy ;P

    • @ahmetmutlu348
      @ahmetmutlu348 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smoke-gl6qk for getting benefits of supercomputers, they have to rewrite gta from beginnin, also parts of gta code is related to graphics cards, that requires rewriting all the gpu based code from beginnin too ;P
      thats why their drivers is closed source ;P
      so there is lots of reasons that is not possible for today.
      Or simply writing a emulator that acts as x86-64 cpu but runs on a supercomputer may work ;P so no rewriting of code is needed ie qemu...
      But it too doesnt hawe a supercomputer based edition i guess, and still a gpu emulator that runs on supercomputer will be needed without modifying original game source ;P

    Actually... It's called IT/Network programming, it might contain a bunch of different languages, it takes a whole team to make one:
    Java
    JavaScript
    Python
    Ruby
    HTML
    PHP
    SQL
    VBS
    C
    C#
    C++
    and more languages.
    I can create a simple server with an old Pentium 4 computer. It could stream some movies, pictures, or just documents that are shared with my family. I also could make a program so that they have separate folders. They just type in a username and password and they're in their own folder.

    I would like to clarify what a supercomputer is from the grad student perspective:
    Let's use the example of the airplne in the video....The grad student talks about the advantage of modeling physical dynamics (e.g. the ability to model the flight of the airplane) using the finite element method. This method requires to solve differential equations at every point that connects and makes up the surface of the plane. Thus, a model like the airplane showed, might have billions of nodes. This requires to solve many many calculations.
    Personal computer processors (e.g. 1.5 GHz) can make 1,500,000,000 calculations per second.
    This includes running all your Windows/Mac operating system. A supercomputer will allow to take the time and additional processors to solve one of these models and one specific calculation (if you parallelized your jobs in the supercomputer). Alternatively if you use your own computer, you'll used up your computer power and it will slow down until the process finishes.

      @livesimplyandhumbly 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eskild Nilsen Røst Surprise ! Your smartphone is already a 1990 supercomputer.
      About 150 GFLOPS in a smartphone. With Samsung starting production on 14nm GPUs 2nd Q of this year Apple, nVidia and Android devices should be able to double that.
      By about 2018, one should be able to play Crysis on a phone .

      Supercomputer is powerful because of parallel computing. The cpu's and other parts are about as powerful as on any computer, but when you put a lot of them together in a cluster, you get a supercomputer.
      Crysis is designed to run on a single computer. To make Crysis run and benefit from a supercomputer architecture, it should be remade, or then it should be emulated. Many games don't even use all the computing power of a modern multicore cpu, because they aren't threaded well enough.

It seems that there are other supercomputers a part from Microsoft Google IBM....that i see on TV every day. i am not sure if these computers are useless or not.. Or just some people find excuses to spend millions (or more) to build something that is actually useless..... i have never heard of something that they do and it is really valuable... In fact we live in ages that computing power is more that programing abillities.. So we can do calculations but we can't create something to calculate the right thing... just useless calculations just to demonstrate the calculation ability of calculators.....

    • @MrJackZhan
      @MrJackZhan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The supercomputers are used to compute complex simulations like chemical reactions at molecular/atomic level, nuclear reactions, and astrophysics. These computations would require years to complete even with the best personal computer on the market. Supercomputers make it possible to test complex theoretical models and analyze huge amounts of data, which helps scientists and the industry learn about newly discovered things. Yes now countries build large supercomputers to show off industrial capability, much like the battleship race during the last century, but supercomputers have much more values other than as showpieces.

    • @MrJackZhan
      @MrJackZhan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Benny Hill There are two kinds of supercomputers. Some supercomputers, like the Blue Waters, are available to public research use, and usually only requires an free application to explain what your research project does. Usually, this application will only get you a fraction of the total computing power, and you may need some extra work to explain why you need more computing power. These are most of the supercomputers you have seen on the news. The other supercomputers are owned by government agencies and private companies for their own purposes. Due to the cost of build and operation, these are usually less powerful than large public ones; however, their owner can use all of its computing power, because they don't share power among hundreds of different research projects like the public ones do. These ones are usually not known to the public. So if you think the government might use supercomputers for some shadowy things, these are the ones they would probably use.
