  • Located within Greater London, on its western edge in the borough of Hillingdon, is the town of Uxbridge.
The name 'Uxbridge' is derived from 'Wixan's Bridge'. The Wixan were a 7th century Saxon tribe from Lincolnshire who settled in what became Middlesex. The bridge in the title was situated near the bottom of Oxford Road. In 1107 it was recorded as 'Woxbrigge'.
At the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, Uxbridge was garrisoned for the Parliamentary army. Charles I met with Parliamentary representatives in 1645 at The Crown Inn for negotiations for the end of hostilities. These proved unsuccessful, possibly due to the king's stubborn attitude as has been speculated. The choice of holding the talks at Uxbridge was deliberate due to its geographic location roughly between the Royal headquarters at Oxford and the Parliamentary stronghold in London.
In the 1790s, the Grand Junction Canal opened. Once it was finished it provided a direct link between London and Birmingham. This provided a boost to the town of Uxbridge as goods could now be transported more efficently via these waterways. Around this time it was also enjoying a thriving trade as a coaching stop for stagecoaches travelling between London and Oxford. This however declined with the opening of the Great Western Railway in 1838.
Uxbridge's growth was rekindled in 1904 with the opening of its own station on the London Underground (although the station is above ground). Today it one of the western termini on both the Piccadilly Line and Metropolitan Line, whose tracks diverge at Rayners Lane. This has made it a popular commuter town for those working in and around central London.
Between 1917 and 2010 the Royal Air Force station RAF Uxbridge was situated in the town. It was known for being the headquarters of No. 11 Group RAF who successfully defended London and the southeast from the German Luftwaffe in 1940 during the Battle of Britain, as well as playing a role in the D-Day landings. The Battle of Britain Bunker is a heritage attraction with attached museum just southeast of Uxbridge town centre.
Historically, Uxbridge was a part of Middlesex up until 1965 at which point the county was swallowed up by, mostly, Greater London - to which it belongs today.

Very long time ago there used to be 3 Uxbridge train stations then all of the sudden 2 had been disused and abandoned so there’s only 1 now

Uxbridge Middlesex County I think they have taken away the great Middlesex County name away-it no longer represents the area/ people and the Royal Air Force’s Uxbridge has now a massive housing complex Estate with gated communities bad news .
