What mission types are you going out to with Ivara? Are you going solo or public? Here are some of my general thoughts (but I don't know if it will answer what you're looking for, without specifics)
Sorry, long answer: For me personally, the general defensive framework on Ivara will be invisibility (Prowl - the main form of defense), 1 defensive type mod (shield-gating) and other supports, parkour, situational awareness/positioning and kill speed.
Prowl/Invisibility - you'll largely not have to worry about getting hit in general. Which means, you can focus on other things while fighting.
But, I generally prefer having at least 1 defensive type mod on Ivara (a lot of builds run none on her and I can understand why too, just preference for me). Currently, I really like running Rolling Guard or something like Boreal's Hatred (Quick Thinking was my old one I frequently liked, but is a bit more niche nowadays). Nowadays, I feel that building for shields (on a frame where they have more shields rather than health and armour) is more viable. Shields have gotten better since they've been changed, they can take more hits and probably the more important thing about them is their shield gate invulnerability time (doesn't protect from Toxin procs tho). Shield-gate prevents you from getting 1-shotted because they provide invincibility for a short duration, scaling off of the capacity of your shields (caps out at 2.5 seconds at 1,150 shields. Hildryn and Protea are the only exceptions that can get past that cap). So building for shields are a lot more nicer nowadays. With something like Boreal's Hatred, it's around 2.3 seconds of shield gate invulnerability time (I forgot the shield recharge time tho). (Although, something like Fast Deflection should also be quite good now too, I just haven't had time to try it). Another great support precept mod that I like using is Guardian on sentinels, since they can instantly get your shields back up in a tight bind (mod has a 30 second cooldown timer). Do note about mod order on sentinels/pets, goes from left to right, top to bottom in which they prioritize using their precept mods.
When you notice your shield gate has worn off, that will be when you probably want to go prowl. Most of the time you'll be relying on prowl to never get hit in the first place (but having shields to take hits is nice, I feel). (This video is a different story though, since I brought out my "light tank-vara" build but only for this specific solo EDA situation. Although debatable if she was needed, but there are other factors at play during this run too).
Parkour is also the major big thing that can keep a frame alive. Just rolling through the air might save you, as enemies have a harder time hitting you when you're parkouring all over the place and you get 75% damage reduction when you're dodge rolling. In general, being able to move faster and taking advantage of parkour momentum will greatly help on any frame. Also, dipping in and out of operator/drifter can also be used for when you're in a bad situation to help support your frame or just void slinging to a better position (I do that frequently for Ivara and also to help move her when I don't want to drop prowl sometimes, or just move in general).
For situational awareness/position, try to avoid being in a bad spot where you might get cross-fired upon (e.g. could use Ivara's dashwire to avoid getting hit) or being aware/getting ready to dodge when an enemy might be doing an AoE attack/wide attack near you. You get more time to analyze your situation when you're invisible. Again, void slinging can be a great way to get out of a bind.
The last thing is killing speed. The faster you eliminate enemies around you, the less dangers and threats you have to worry about. Also, gives you a bit more time to deal with higher priority threats, if you can eliminate lower priority threats faster.
