Main problem with Mac is the restrictive apple ecosystem. A lot of softwares don't work on Mac. You will be using a variety of software in your engineering journey. So a windows laptop will be the best. Just do a bit of research to find the best combination of performance, battery and screen size. I suggest don't go for fancy features like touch screen, foldable laptops etc as you won't be using it much

i5 6th gen definitely. But I would still recommend an i5 9th gen or newer. i3, i5, i7, i9...etc refer to the core count. The number following tells the generation. i5 6th gen has 4 cores, and i7 2nd gen has 4 as well, but i5 is newer so better. With newer cpus, like 9th gen 10th gen...etc i3 - 4 cores i5 - 6 cores i7 - 8 cores I recommend getting a hexa core processor like i5 or ryzen 5. Also, if you are looking at laptops, you might see a letter after the number, here is what they mean: U - Ultra low power - for things like browsing the internet, excel spreadsheet etc. H - High Performance - The one you would want, for programming, video editing, light gaming etc. HS - High Performance Slim - Between U and H, you can go for it too. HX - Overclockable - If you want to overclock your processor. Hope this helps
