United came to Upton Park with a point to prove after last season’s title failure. Cantona was absent as he was serving his suspension. His return galvanised United and Eric took it upon himself to prove a point. His early 8th minute goal turns out to be the crucial winner and 3 important points for United. But the image of him turning into a peacemaker when he restrained Andy Cole after the latter reacted angrily to a horrible Julian Dicks lunge in the whole melee which led to Nicky Butt’s sending off.

outrageous how the Man Utd players protested the sending off for what was a clear dangerous tackle. No wonder they were so hated throughout the 90s

They protested about the atrocious Julian Dicks leg breaking tackle on Andy Cole just prior to it - look at the facts before spewing your anti united bile

Butt took one for the team.
      Everyone hates winners.

Butt was rightly penalised but United were protesting against a dangerous tackle by Julian Dicks on Andy Cole before Butt’s challenge on Dicks which resulted in the United player’s sending off. United felt aggrieved that Dicks wasn’t given the same punishment.

Anyone know why Man United wore red for this game?

Well that was the season of the grey away kit that people didn't like, especially Ferguson lol
The 3rd kit was blue & white which would've probably clashed more than this kit did.
Having said all that, they hadn't stopped wearing the grey kit that season yet until the Southampton game in latter part of the season (this was mid-season).
