A Stoats Tail for AUTUMN SALMON - Fly Tying Tutorial

  • A variant of one of the deadliest low water flies ever devised, the stoats tail. This fly dressing has proven itself to be effective during low water periods of autumn for salmon and seatrout. I have no doubt the fly will also work well for dollaghan trout.
Most salmon and seatrout rivers across the country are seeing their lowest level in almost two months so maybe it's time to tie one of these up and give it a cast.
I hope you enjoy watching 👍

Waow, awesome fly. I would tie a few of them and try them out in the weekend.

Ah the pattern that I first used ..and tied on Welsh Dee ,Lune and Annan to take salmon... oh and Stinchar!
A straightforward and economic pattern to learn to tie with materials that are easy to find.
Could well be giving a size 10 a swim in the next few days.
Happy tying and safe wading ...(and unhook those salmo salar carefully that you catch on the Stinchar stoat)

i am new to salmon fishing and just caught my first brace of fish this season on a self tied and designed fly from my local small spate burn . i am very confused though. what makes a salmon fly a "low water" fly and why ? what is low water ? on my water it rises fast and runs off fast, very peaty . the guys i know all wait for the river to rise after rain and then to begin to fall before fishing a short window before it is too low . i suppose my question is , if "low water" on my tiny river is never fished should i disregard "low water " flies ? in this case what is a "high water" fly ? should i start with a "high water" fly and as my river lowers towards the end of the session switch to a "low water" pattern like this one ? our river is a back end water fishing best for salmon from aug-oct . sorry for the new guy questions i am just a little confused by all this low water fly chat

Hi Flint, it would be considered a low water fly due to its size, lightly dressed and a mobile wing material. Stoats tail and their variants are very popular low water flies.
As a broad rule of thumb the higher the water and fresher the fish the bigger the fly. As the water drops or fish become resident you may want to fish smaller.
Some folks will fish the conditions given so low water flies can be very useful

@@SeánWoodsFishing thanks so much , that makes it a little clearer . i will fish even on low water when nobody else does so i might keep some of these small low water patterns handy . does this general way of thinking run into the end of the season ? during autumn ie now , low water on a small peaty spate burn , should i be fishing a small size 12 red francis or a small low water pattern like the one you tie in the video using the same methods for summer low water or should i be fishing a big heavy size 4 or 6 and fishing the deeper holes as possible in the low conditions ? new sub , thanks for taking the time to answer my questions

@@captainflint89 as the water temperature begins to drop into autumn I would increase the fly size. I can't fish past September on the rivers I fish so the water usually isn't too cold. Wee hairwings and Francis and both good low water options. Irish shrimp flies are another if you are actively fishing then while twitching the line. In very low very warm water I even go down to size 18s 👍Thanks for the sub 👌

@@SeánWoodsFishing perfect advice , exactly what i was wanting , very clear . i actually tied up a few irish style shrimp flies after watching your videos , funnily enough , this season i got my first ever fly caught salmon on a "sea trout fly" i had made up for my local beach , it had the irish style golden pheasant rump wound like a hackle but tied in at the head infront of a bronze mallard flank tied in as a sparse "underhackle" if thats what you call it , kind of like a big oversize spider style fly , then a long slender pearl tinsel body medcine fly style with a red floss short tag . A claret thread forms the head . i used an ahrex stinger size 8 , no idea what made me put it on that day to fish a pool through but i am very glad i did , i landed two fish , (one a relatively fresh hen still silvery) in 2 days and lost 2 others on the same fly at end september . just thought i would share the dressing with you as i have now copied lots of yours ! hope you tie it and give it a shot if your feeling lucky , all the best

@@captainflint89 thanks for sharing that flint and congratulations on your first and second ever fly caught salmon. To get them on your own fly makes it an even bigger accomplishment. That's you hooked now though....be warned...it's an illness 😂
