    looks great. I need to look for a macro lens for my A7S.
    I've had reasonable results on canon with a 70-300 but it was a bit limiting.

    • @papilioT
      @papilioT  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nitsan Simantov
      Thank you Nitsan!
      The quick solution for macro would be a Raynox DCR-250, it would clip on to the front of the Canon lens with its universal adapter. The magnification varies proportionately with focal length, so at 300mm it would be more power than you'd likely want. These lenses are optically superb for the money ($56 USD on Amazon).
      If you'd like the improved performance of a dedicated macro lens the no-brainer suggestion would be a Canon-mount Tokina AT-X 100mm f/2.8 PRO D Macro (assuming you're using a Metabones or equivalent on your Sony?). At well under $400 on Amazon it's the lens bargain of the decade, still one of the sharpest macros around.

      @LolMouse 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +papilioT thanks but i don't like adapting lenses anymore if i can avoid it.

    • @papilioT
      @papilioT  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LolMouse
      Understood -- it was just that you'd mentioned the a7S as well as the 70-300mm so I made an improper assumption. I read quite a bit of Roger Cicala's blogs, his evidence for the degradation brought about by introducing *any* unnecessary interfaces into the optical train is quite convincing.
      That said, my most-used piece of glass is the one-of-a-kind MP-E and being able to adapt that to the a7II was one factor which helped push me in that direction. My only other lens is a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar 2/100 and happily I notice no drop in its performance when using it through the Metabones.
      In any case I brought it up only when suggesting the Tokina, as they have that in both Nikon and Canon mounts but not Sony.
      In time I hope to build a collection of native glass, Sony's bringing out some top-shelf stuff for us! :)

    • @LolMouse
      @LolMouse 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +papilioT cool. Sony have a 90mm macro but the price is ridiculous.

    • @papilioT
      @papilioT  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LolMouse
      Right, though to be fair it is one of the sharpest lenses ever tested by DxOMark (for whatever that's worth). And the ~$1000 USD neighborhood is quite typical of modern macro lenses whether Canon, Nikkor, whomever, so it remains a strong contender. Do these relative figures hold true in the UK as well or is the Sony priced out of the market there?
      That's why I consider the Tokina to be such a steal. By no means is it second rate ... sharper/higher microcontrast than either the best of Nikkor or Canon in my experience, though it does (in rigorous tests at least) have a bit more of a color problem than is typical of most. Perhaps they'll put it out in E-mount one of these days. Tokina has already done so with their $2500 100mm Cine Macro, which is *exactly* the same lens in a hi-tech cine body.

      +precarious333
      That's a big concern of mine, how thin she is. I keep 3 BBs in her enclosure at all times but her interest in them isn't great. When she catches one she just sucks some of the juice from it and leaves most of the meal hanging in the webbing. Same happens in fact when I give her mealworms, nearly all of the nutrition goes uneaten.
      I've asked on fb about this, the authorities are saying that as long as the environment is correct (as it is) the rest is up to her.
      I tried pairing them yesterday (is to be done early afternoon), the male went right at it but she wasn't having anything to do with him! I'm told by those who know that these should be *very* easy to breed, so I'll keep trying each day.

    • @precarious333
      @precarious333 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +papilioT
      She will probably resist mating until she fattens up. She needs more body mass first. That's my guess but as you know I'm no spider expert. She may be afraid of BBs. Try different feeders. Get some small roaches. Jumpers are very different from Ts so you need to find a food she likes.

    • @papilioT
      @papilioT  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +precarious333
      That was precisely my thinking as well ... while males are typically pretty thin, female salticids I see photos of seem always to be nice and plump. I assume she'll also need to be fatter if she is to produce a sac of any reasonable size. Most of the breeders on fb had been saying that a typical Hyllus sac is only 20 eggs, but Paul Flaharty (a major dealer/breeder from the UK) claims that this is due to most others not having high enough temps ... by keeping his female Hylluses at 100+F he's able to get sacs of about 60.
      He also confirmed that BBs are usually their preferred diet but it was he who suggested mealworms as the best chance to fatten her up which is why I'm trying them as well. I've got a small village of breeders helping me out with this one!
      This girl was pretty uncontrollable when she first arrived, but having by now spent a good deal of time with her during photo shoots she's now as docile as can be! :)

      Good to know they calm with handling. My girl is in a cocoon for weeks now. I don't know if she's molting or what. Maybe she wasn't adult.

      @precarious333 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, be careful with the temp thing. Remember they are in the shade in the wild and the high temps there are partly due to the high humidity. So a heat lamp would not be suitable. It would dry her out.
