I remember standing beside and looking up at my mama while she sang this song in a little Methodist church that is no longer there in Longview, Texas. Each time I hear this and any of the old hymns, I hear her angelic voice and I feel her nearness. She's been in heaven for a long time now and I know she's there singing to the glory of the Lord.
I'm so sorry for your loss, Richard. In fact, the Bible speaks about death as a sleep, and that those who die in Christ will rise with Him on the day of His coming! For example, Daniel 12:2 says, "And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." Jesus Himself said in John 5:28-29 that "all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." So, if our loved ones are already in heaven, along with all others who have died in Christ, why would Christ come again to resurrect those who are already in heaven? Those whom we love are waiting for Jesus to return, not looking down upon our sorrow and pain. "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have them any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten" (Ecclesiastes 9:5). Blessed assurance is the truth of our Christian journey on planet earth.
