  • After selling my M100 kit that included the EF-M 55-200mm and wanting more range, I first tried an EF 75-300mm kit zoom lens. That was alright, but I didn't like how the focus ring moved when the camera is doing autofocus. With my budget of near zero I looked at old cheap options and found the Canon EF 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM lens. It's actually older than the 75-300, but has a better build quality plus design because when focusing there is no unwanted movement of the focus ring. In this video I took the lens out 4 times in challenging winter conditions of rain, cold, and the quickly dark afternoon light. While a lot of the challenges were on the camera's sensor due to high ISO, I did manage some lower ISO photos, video footage, and other interesting content from the lens so far. The camera used with the lens was the Canon EOS M5.

Thanks for this video. I picked one up a few months ago, and find that for capturing anything with motion, the image quality is just lousy. I agree that you have to have a lot of light to get a decent image and stationary landscapes or capturing slow movement is where this lens has its strengths. For an f 4.5-5.6 at any focal length…you get what you pay for, and you end up with the conclusion that you want to pay 10x for a lens that captures what you want it to.

I'm not good at English so I'm sorry if you said following content in the video.
I would like to ask you a question.
I am considering using this lens with EOS M50.
I would like to shoot birds or planes, is it comfortable to shoot with the EF-EOS M adapter on the EOS M5? (AF speed, etc.)
On the contrary, I am considering using a 2x or 1.4x teleconverter.
Please let me know if you know for the detail.

Teleconverters reduce the f-stop of the lens (1.4x is 1-stop and 2x is 2-stops). That will mean the focusing system will have less light. I have not used a teleconverter so I can't say how it will work. This lens is already f/4.5 to f/5.6 so it will be f/6.3 to f/8. I don't like the output of this lens as it is, so a teleconverter would make it worse.

hello, i just found a basic eos M in my house, with a 18-55 mm, i want to use for makeup pictures and some kind of videos. Do YOU recommend it? Or my iphone xr camera is simply better? If you could help me, i would really appreciate it. Cheers from Brazil!

You could always just try it out once and see if you like the results. That said, the older EOS M cameras didn't have great autofocus. The only ones I'd recommend are ones with a microphone port because they give the creator more flexibility as they learn how to make good videos. Specifically the Canon M6, M50, M6 mark II. The M5 has a mic port but the back screen flips down which makes it very inconvenient for video. The iPhone might be easier to start with.

The official adapter will be the most consistent option with autofocus.

If I could know more, how the AF work on 100-300 with Viltrox .71x adpter?

I haven't watched this video in a long time, but that's the combination used in this video. Maybe I didn't talk about AF? I can't recall... The AF definitely works and the speed booster gets more light onto the sensor. You will never get native lens performance adapting. The EF-M cameras that I have are not especially good at action photos. The only good EF-M camera for action is the M6 Mark II (Or so I've heard, haven't used it)
Here is another video with that lens: th-cam.com/video/xpKVnGpw8FU/w-d-xo.html

Will a teleconverter work with it?

Assuming there is one that safely fits, you'd be cancelling out the benefit of the speed booster. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecompressor

Las fotos las tomaste con el F al mínimo que es su peor rendimiento con cualquier luz, podrías cerrar el lente entre el F8 y F18 y tener mejores resultados
