There is nothing worse that going off road with a Mike. We all know a Mike, he's the one who shows up at your door and says: "dude! Let's go four wheelin, and don't worry, we won't be going anywhere where my rig can get stuck like the last dozen times....trust me." After 10-30 minutes on the trail and one wheel is in the air, one is buried in ________ and the remaining 2 wheels are grabbing turf like a kid grabbing a greased pig at a county fair. Shovel? No. High lift jack? Back at home. Winch? He took it off for "weight reduction" purposes. Snatch block? "What's a snatch block?" Cellphone? Good luck getting a signal out here. Flare gun? "Yes!"...flares? "Uh, fired them all because (and this is a direct quote) I needed to scare the deer away from my wife's garden." Follow up question is: "did it work?" To which he says: "permanently...by burning the garden down." Yep, we all know a Mike, who is a good guy, just don't leave the pavement with him driving.
I'm putting a Truetrac in the rear on my 2018 JLU Sport S. I bought it used in 2019 and the original owner purchased the upgraded dana 44 rear. I've heard great things about TrueTrac and will probably end up putting it in the front 30 as well. Cool video!
This was very impressive for a relatively inexpensive modification. The consistency of the snow where Scooter got stuck is probably a worst case kind of snow.
I like skinny tires, but depending on the size/weight of your vehicle, not always practical or possible.... We've been bugging companies to come out with a 35" x 10/R17 (18) and maybe they're starting to listen! Props to you for using the skinnies!!!
Just got my Truetrac in for my 03 tacoma, it has the factory e locker in the rear. Sometimes you just need a little bit more traction. Didnt wanna drop the $$$ on the eaton e locker or arb/yukon air locker
People don't believe that pizza cutter tyres are best, but in deep snow and mud you have less resistance pushing through yhe stuff. I used to run 8.25"×16, or 9.00x16, even narrower than 255 section. 9.00s were 36/37" diam and the Michelin XZL can be aired down to 6psi for a long footprint.
@@4x2WagonFamily I can see on rock, sand, low pressures and wide tyres are the thing. They look cool. But in mud, snow, they aren't, plus more likely to over stress drivetrain. Maybe 10.50/35 x 15s? I know there are companies in CA that import ex military Michelin XZL, and a company in Holland with huge stocks of the same. Vrakking Tyres.
@@4x2WagonFamily - I have multiple sets of tires for my '16 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd Ecodiesel. The Cooper ST Maxx 255/80r17 tires on my stock rims. Have amazing traction in many situations. But they dig up the soil. Sand is weird, they sink in, but keep going. My highway tires are General APT 275/60r20 3PMSF rated tires. Off road they seem to work in all conditions. My truck has open differentials front and rear. I am thinking of regearing from 3.92 to 4.56 or 4.88. And then going 35/12.50-17 tires. Will most likely switch to RCV axles in the front. And Truetracs front and rear. My wife has an '18 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins powered beast. With 275/70-18 General APT tires. That beast needs bigger tires and a change from the 3.42 ratio to 3.73 or 4.10. There is a Trutrac in the rear. My go anywhere vehicle is a '96 Jeep ZJ. It had a cracked axle and diff housing when I got it. I put in a reman Dana 44 with the Tru Trac. The rims are stock, no lift yet. But the tires are General AT2 255/70-15. Goes anywhere it is pointed in all conditions. Being lighter than the other vehicles listed, may help.
All my land cruiser had open Diffs including my fj40 and Just to be fair, if my Jeep was stock with open Diffs I would not have gone as far, but yeah I love my Jeep and having lockers is the only way to go in the snow.
I’ve seen videos of vehicles running Eaton TrueTracs and they will brake to send traction to the opposite wheel. I’ve watched a few of your videos and I don’t notice you doing that. Can a you expound a bit on your driving technique while using the TrueTracs? I had convinced myself that I was going to install Lokka lockers but after stumbling across your videos I am researching TrueTracs. 😂
Just drive normal. Just so you know the Truetrac does have some downsides. Such as if one wheel is off the ground it will most likely behave like an open Diff. But I’m still learning and testing this scenario and I’ll be publishing another video soon on this topic.
Do u guys have any comments on how more or less capable my 14 two dr JK would be with a locker in the rear vs truetrac? I already have truetrac in front. I mostly prefer climbing aspect of Offroading. I know obviously lockers would be better but just wondering how much better they would be in the rear
3.3 “ lift. Cheap Amazon stuff. The spring and brake line extension cost 125 for everything. I’m not big on brands, I buy cheap especially the springs. Spend your money on a good winch and tires. I’m running 37” Bfg with 1/2” wheel spacers otherwise it rubs on the lower control arm when you turn sharp.
Take a look at YT channel "Gelik Off Road". Young Russian guy with unstoppable GWagon. His main advantage is Narrow tyres, admittedly agri- pattern (which aren't always brilliant in snow, depending on the type of snow). It would interesting to see how he got on against the Turkish guys with their huge wide mud tyres and Landrover Discovery 2s. I think their channel is Turkish Off Road a guy called Selim Ustoaglou..I think
I'm running Eaton TruTrac front and rear on my Land Rover Discovery 1. Ran chains while up in Big Bear snow. Very happy with TruTrac.

Jeep Wranglers will benefit there is no doubt. On pavement it is much more refined as well.
I'm in UK. I use narrow tyres and don't struggle. Either 255/85 or 255/100×16

I’m also a Narrow tire believer does better in most cases off road, but it’s hard to find narrow tires in usa. Everyone wants a big wide tires:(

Your fj60 would have gotten stuck so many times. Props to Jeep and especially the FJ40

It feels no difference in snow, rain or mud. It’s smooth.

Chains would help for sure, but it’s also fun to see how far you can go without chains.
