Thanks to your extensive Rebecca Video that showed up on my recommended Page not to long ago, I also went to Vienna to see Rebecca! The video was so intruiging, and then in the comments the people wrote "This musical is still popular in Europe" so I went to google to find out it will be premiering in Vienna soon, and Vienna is only 4 hours from where I live. Having watched some slime tutorials I kinda knew that I liked musicals, but I never saw one in person. I told my husband (who never had anything to do with musicals) that we have to go and watch rebecca. And we did. It was such a beautiful experience. He was blown away, because he didn't even know what he had to expect (he told me he wants to see other musicals, because he enjoyed it so much). I loved it so much, seeing the actors, the musicians, the stage design, and experiencing the joy all the other visitors felt. A magical experience. And since I have seen your video, I couldn't wait for the part with the stairs at the end. Somehow just knowing the backstory of the musical and not the story or music made it so much more special. I rambled... Anyway thank you for inspriring us to see a musical and probably many more in the future.
As a New Yorker living in exile on the US west coast, there is nothing I love more than introducing people to musical theater. Congratulations on seeing your first production and hooray to your husband for being so open minded and willing to try something new! How exciting for both of you - there are so many shows I wish I could forget that I’ve seen just so I could see them as though they were new all over again, and you get to start that journey with your husband. I’m half a world away, but sending you both big theater hugs and best wishes. You’re going to have the most fantastic of adventures!
That sounds absolutely wonderful. I'm thinking of going in March. I've read somewhere that there are English translations above the stage, was this true when you were there?
@@BillAngell Yes there are english translations. There are multiple screens, so it should not matter where your seat is. :) For someone non native the english translations read well. There was just one time where I was "hold up, that translation can't be right" (but maybe it is?)
I really appreciate how you're hightlighting a musical from another country. So many people only think of Broadway or the West End as the origin for musicals but there are so many fantastic, incredible musicals being written in other countries. Would love to see you expand this to other foreign musicals if possible.
It makes me so sad that Broadway doesn't seem able to do any of the German transfers right. Tanz der vampire is an amazing show, it's not the joke dance of the vampires had ended up becoming. Rebecca is amazing too, as you know. I shudder to think of what's going to happen once they decide to transfer Elisabeth.
Can you do a video about Kunze’s other popular hit Elisabeth? I gave up hope this will ever be staged in North America. But it seems to be very popular still after 30 yrs in Europe, Japan, and Korea, with productions still regularly revived. I am currently in Tokyo now. Before my visit I tried to get a ticket to Elisabeth, which has debuted here 25 years ago and has been brought back every couple of years or so since then. The entire limited run of this show was sold out in 5 minutes. Much of it during priority presale to Takarazuka fan clubs. I didn’t even stand a chance. It is also now playing in Korea at the same time. Will I ever even get to see this show…? Would love one of your videos about why it is still so craze inducing among Europe and Asia but virtually unknown in North America.
As a Viennese person this is so fun to see. I don't go to the Raimund Theater nearly as often as I'd like to lol must have been so special to meet Michel Kunze!
Oh man I wish I was old enough to go to Vienna to see this AMAZING musical. I'm such a big fan of Kunze's musicals. I've watched all of them on youtube and I saw Elisabeth live!! It's my all time favourite musical. I really hope they bring Rebecca to Belgium one day since they've already done all Kunze's other musicals here.
A surprise and treat video -- and fascinating (just after I became familiar with some of the historical drama behind the musical Funny Girl). Maybe I'll see Rebecca The Musical someday when it's on tour! BTW Brendon, you look handsome/cute in a suit, and congratulations on your successful launch (making your drama school crucible ancient history).
Vienna! Schonbrunn! I miss it so much! We went after seeing many, many productions of Elisabeth (in Japanese, since the Takarazuka Revue put their shows on DVDs), and became a little obsessed with the musical. Kunze's works are all amazing. I loved the soundtrack for Tanz der Vampire (I don't know if you've done an episode on Dance of the Vampires, but oh, was that a not-good adaptation of Tanz) and Elisabeth and Rebeca all in German, and I'd been so excited about the English adaptation! How was the show? Who was in the cast? Curious if I've heard them on soundtracks or not. Isn't the view from the Gloriette amazing?!
The cast of the new production has Mark Seibert as Maxim de Winter, Willemijn Verkaik as Mrs. Danvers, Nienke Latten as "Ich", Ana Milva Gomes as Mrs. Van Hopper, Annemieke van Dam as Beatrice (she's also the alternate Mrs. Danvers), Ari Sas (OG Alfred in Tanz der Vampire) as Ben and Boris Pfeifer (the Prince in the Vienna production of Romeo et Juliette) as Jack Favell.
OMG, this is so weird!I live like three streets over from Raimund Theater and we go over there all the time with my cousin's two year old because he's in the love with the fountain in front of it that gets lit up in different colors!
I was in Vienna like a month ago, and I saw ads for the Rebecca musical around the city (which reminded me of your video). Congrats on getting to attend such a show and for the whole experience in general.
What does Mrs. Danvers sound like? What kind of songs does she have? I loved the book and was slightly apprehensive about the movie, but I was floored by Judith Anderson. She was EXACTLY how Daphnee Du Maurier wrote her. How is she on stage? Is she belting big sons like "No Good Deed" or did they make her whispery and creepy as if Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestlet were singing? Did you notice changes in the material between the German and English versions? In which was Mrs. Danvers at her best?
Vienna is beautiful. I was there this past week and I bought tickets to Rebecca and then found out I had the chance to see a preview of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and I could only one show. I went with Hunchback and it was amazing.
I am so immensely happy that you got this incredible experience!!! I’m hoping to one day go see it myself. I truly wish it would come to Broadway for real some day.
Oh my god 100k subs my guy I'm so proud I've been here since about 20k if I remember correctly and you've been one of my favorites here on TH-cam for over a year now
My only memory of Vienna was being frisked at gunpoint in the airport. It wasn't long after Carlos the Jackal tried to blow the place up, and I had put my travel alarm in my shirt pocket that morning. Can't blame them, I guess, but it was certainly memorable.
If an English language Rebecca could get wealthy backers with deep pockets I think Ramin Karimloo as Maxim De Winter and Lady Gaga as Mrs. Danvers would bring the crowds. It seems that Star Power tends to be a necessary marketing ploy in American Theater to get butts in seats. I think lady Gaga would excel in the role of Mrs. Danvers based on her turn in American Horror Story Hotel and the fact she ca really belt out a tune. Just listen to her singing The Sound of Music at the 2015 Oscars.
That is so cool! I absolutely looovveeeee Rebecca! It has become my favourite musical (for now), since I first saw it on Okt 1st. As an Austrian I luckily have the opportunity to watch it more than once, and I definitely do that :-)
Rebecca will get a 2nd chance at Broadway, I know it, I feel it in my bones, it's going to happen and I will be there opening night 🥲. Fingers crossed for a Rebecca review too!!
Thank you for clarifying the crowdfunding situation, though I personally never doubted your sincerity. You’re the complete antithesis of the e-begging scammers behind Titanic: Honor & Glory.

Look at Brendon so grown up, being invited places and meeting people! I feel like a proud absent father
OMG I would kill to meet Kunze cause I LOVE Elisabeth and I did “I belong to me” for my first cabaret show at my day program.
I pray they bring Rebecca back to Broadway and that it’s successful. I desperately need a cast recording
Oh my gosh they’re redoing Rebecca thank gosh
There have actually been two productions this year! One in Vienna and one in the outdoor theater of Magdaburg
Fingers crossed it gets a chance to come to America properly this time. After watching his video on it I’ve been very curious about Rebecca
@@elizabethlevesque6978 I think there were some talks with the creator and he does not want to bring it back to Broadway 😅☺️
@@merlesstorys 😅 ah, fair enough tho
God i hope this show can somehow find its way to the states
In the written article Michael Kunze was asked if he thought they should try again. He couldn't even get through the question before it was shot down.
You deserve this for all your hard work dude! Congrats!
This makes me so happy!! Michael Kunze seems like such a cool dude. Thrilled for your success, Brendon!

Good news Rebecca is coming to London next year in September 4 2023. There will be a English language

the pure joy i got from watching this !!! brilliant
You are the historian on Rebecca. Can’t wait for your take on the London off West End production.
