I agree with you about the CF/G10 Ply being nice. I really like my Sage 5 too!
It took me awhile to buy one but after I found out how much I like the para 3 I knew I’d like the sage 5 because of the wire clip.
Have you ever noticed the spyder logo on the Taichung knives, if you look at it with a magnifying glass the spyder is filled with a spyder web-like design. At least it is on the Kapara. I will have to check my Sage 5 when it arrives in a couple of days. Cool little detail.
Another great review; if you can ever get your hands on a Caly 3 you may want to check it out. For me, the sage was the mid point between the Para 3 and Caly 3. The Para 3 for harder use when restrictions and perception matter, and the Caly 3 for the office carry that still gets things done...also the action on the Caly 3 is smooth as silk, it has a hydraulic feeling.
Bought the LW version and couldn’t be happier.
Been waiting on this review!
Cheers Mate!
I've been thinking of getting one for awhile now..the size is perfect for my edc needs, and God knows I love the compression lock.
I just got the Frodon Lock exclusive Manix2 in marbled CF and a 4v hollow ground blade. I would prefer the FF grind, but it is still a great slicer..they are still available if anyone wants one, and I would be willing to let ya borrow it if you would like to review it. The Marbled CF looks awesome, and I absolutely love it!
I typically prefer larger blades, but the more I handle the sage 5, the more I like it. Love the texture of the cf over g10. Feels very comfortable in hand. I haven't disassembled it yet so I'm hoping once I service it, it will drop free like your example. Right now I have to give it just a touch of wrist and it drops. I have zero interest in the para 3. But since the sage 5 has basically the same size blade, it's filling the niche for me for a smaller edc knife in a design that I really like. And the wire clip adds another item to check off in the pro column.
The Sage is a solid platform....very utilitarian and very EDC friendly
Thanks for this review. I have two PM2's (don't ask), the only Spyderco's that I own...I was considering a slightly smaller model...and was overwhelmed at how many knives they make....There are way too many choices! LOL! I sort of slowly sorted through all the options that the Sage 5 might be the one and I think that your review backed up my own conclusions, perfectly! 😬
Absolutely one of my favorite Spyderco’s. I had the 1,3 and 5 and loved them all until I got the Domino and never carried the Sages again. It was a bit bigger than the Sage’s and I happen to like larger knives. It was difficult to sell them but I did. Aside from the size I liked the Sage’s a lot. I would highly recommend them.
To all the CF-G10 haters I guess you don’t care that it would have raised the price by $50-75. I much rather have it in peel ply than pay that much more. By the way my Domino is peel ply and it’s a perfect knife.
It's my favorite Spyderco by far.
This is my next knife oh yeah CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP
I want one !!!
My favorite EDC!!! I've been annoying you about this one for a while now!!!
By the way I was waiting for you to have a dedicated video on the Sage 5 and wish I could add 1000000 likes!!!
Thanks Bryan.
I'm not much of a small knife guy, but I like these Sage knives. Much better than any of the PM3's. I have the bolt action Sage 3, and really like this little thing. I also really like it's G10 CF overlay. The best in the business.
👍🔪🍺😎
I can’t get a grip behind the choil. I have to use the choil to get a good grip. But I feel like the handle is too long in that way, make sense? Like I love the chaparral it’s 4 fingers very efficient. The sage knives look great but kind of fall into a group with the native I just don’t like much.
The one question I have is that the wire clip is shorter than any other clip I've seen on any other Sage5. What up? Another great review on a great EDC. Keep them coming.
So its basically a Para3 without the horendously placed lanyard hole. IMO, beats out the PM2 as an EDC. If you haven't handled one, try a Sage2. Smoother than my Sebenza. I bought 2 because if I ever loose one I wouldn't want to be without. NOW you've given me a dilemma, Compression lock or titanium. Now, if they would put the compression lock in the titanium....
The sage looks like the manix 2
Hi Slicey ur awesome
Did yours come drop shut smooth? I just got one and played with the pivot and improved it, but nowhere near drop shutty.
Which Spyderco has the best eros; the Sage 5 or the Native 5? I have been on the fence about the Sage 5 but I am going to wait for the reviews on the Mantra 3 which Knifeworks has in stock. Excellent review.
barry levitt mantra is a cool knife but it doesn’t have the finger choil and isn’t as comfortable in the hand. Regarding the Native, I also wondered before but I like the ramp on the sage vs the flat top of the native... both great knives depends on your personal preference
I have the original native 5 with the pinned constriction and spear point blade but I wanterd to update the knife so I can disassemble it for cleaning. Thank You for the feed back.
I don't understand why Sage 5 the most popular model did not get an upgrade in steel but the sage 1got an upgrade
One of my most carried knives.....
Slicey Dicey I thought the new Mantra was going to be awesome, basically same construction as rage Sage 5, but the blade near the pivot
One point about the Sage series..this is the first model WITH a lanyard hole, none of the other Sages have em..
Just a side note, I now own a Sage 5 which fulfills all the Sages...the LW version is me last Sage acquisition if they ever bring it out..
Chaparral over native 5
Wosemerry& tyme.
How did I miss this gem? I hate the Spyderco hump that most have. This blade shape is sweet. Headed to Amazon now. Thanks SD!
You can get 10% off at white mountain knives!
Thanks. Picked up the Titanium version.
