  • Greetings! This week I want to share with you how to balance a wobbly ceiling fan. We have all experienced this at one time or another. You may have thought that there was no way to fix it and that you just had to learn to live with it. You don't! This is an easy, albeit, time consuming fix. A few inexpensive supplies are needed but in the end you will have a smooth working, non irritating ceiling fan to enjoy year round!
    I hope you learned something and I hope this was helpful!

    I had balanced my SMC Laguna ceiling fan, that is made in 1979. It used to wobble more than it does. It had 4 blades I found it easier to remove 2 blades to balance other 2 blades, then swap these 2 blades with other 2, then balanced these blades, then put other 2 blades back on. Wobbles less!

    I thought mine needed to be balanced, but it turned out to be some loose screws that attached motor to downrod. Thanks for help anyway! We have some spare balancing kits now I guess.

    I balanced my fan this week! The fan blades wobble a little, but the lights, aka the "base" remains completely still I used one of those metal clips for a stack of papers. Then once I figured it out, I used a quarter and taped it. Once I confirmed the wobble went away, I used Gorilla glue to permanently glue the quarter. Problem solved!

    Wow, I got almost the same model as yours. Mine is OL52066-R. I notice your wobble a lot more then mine even fine tuning it. Mine hardly wobble, it shakes a tiny bit. But before it wobbles a lot, so I go to Walmart and buy 2 silver bracket and secure the top more and use Adhesive and Silicone Sealer and seal the whole base to the ceiling and now it wobble only a tiny bit.
    I may need to fine tune the blade and it will be perfect, but from the look of it, it is way too time-consuming.

      Yes, the first thing anyone should do is make sure all your connections, especially to the ceiling, are good and tight! :)

    Hi Rick I have a Hampton bay my fan is wobble a lot I bought a balance kit try everyone still wobbles. Could be the black hanging ball or could it be by blades they du

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      arron pina 1) Make sure all the fan blades are tight. 2) make sure where the fan mounts to the ceiling is tight and if an extension pipe was used make sure it's tightly connected at both ends of the pipe. 3) If none of these help you can try swapping opposite blades across from each other two at a time. If none of that helps then, unfortunately, I'm afraid some fans just can't be balanced.

    Very helpful. Getting a house that I know has a very wobbly fan. Will follow your instructions (except for the beverage), but have a question: how do I tighten the blades if I find they are loose? I assume there are screws, but I am not at the house yet and can't study the fan. The particular fan looks a lot like the one you demoed, but may be different. Thanks!

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most times you can see and access the blade screws while looking up at the fan. You may have to use the screw driver at awkward angle but can still get plenty of torque on the screws.

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On some fans you may have to move the light assembly out of the way to get to the screws.

    It’s easier to replace the blade Brackets which there sold at Lowe’s for not much because the blades are bent since there 6 blades is better if you get a 2 packs which it should be 10 and it should match the fan and hopefully the trick works

  • @danw6411
    @danw6411 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    or pull it apart check the screws in the mounts could be loose and fan blade screws tighten any and all screws no reason go spend money on weights

    my flusmount scrapes when runs what could it be?

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sherri B First and foremost, make sure there is nothing rubbing on the motor cover (the decorative cover between the blades and ceiling. On some fans the manufacturers put stickers on the outside of the motor that can can come loose and cause a scraping noise. Or sometimes the bearings get a little dry and can become noisy but a little petroleum jelly (which will be less messy than a spray lube) put on the shaft above the bearing should eventually quiet it down once the jelly begins to melt into the bearing. Hope that helps!

    I used a black spring clip I had for holding sheets of paper together. They come in different sizes. You could put a dime under one for more weight if needed. When it is balanced you can stick the balance weight to the top. :) I later found that I had some screws that came loose and tightened them up and good to go.

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Barry Wind Yes, loose screws was the 2nd thing I said to check for before trying to balance the fan.

    To save the 3 dollar kit (yes, I am cheap) glue a half dollar coin instead. The coin weighs 12.5 grams and seems to work better.

    • @noreenskitchenchannel
      @noreenskitchenchannel 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jennifer Ray I suppose you could do that, but really? The kit is $3. Pony up the cash and do it right and proper. Incidentally, it is against the law to deface coinage or money.

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Noreen's Kitchen And you would still need the weighted plastic piece that comes in the kit to know exactly where you would need to glue the 50 cent piece, anyway.

    • @AZDesertPhil
      @AZDesertPhil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Noreen's Kitchen That's not quite accurate. :) For coinage it's only illegal if you fraudulently represent it as currency after you've altered it. E.g. You can't drill a hole in a quarter, and the try and pass it off as quarter to pay for something.

    • @noreenskitchenchannel
      @noreenskitchenchannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AZDesertPhil I would never drill a hole in a quarter. Just spend the money on the kit. Geez!

      @maryford535 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I meant to say with that long pipe but not stick

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most ceiling fans (unless they are specifically hugger style) give you the option when installing whether you want to mount it "hugger" style or hanging and come with the parts to do so. Assuming you no longer have those parts (I have several because I never throw those things away :D) you will need to go to your hardware store and buy a downrod in the length of your choosing, a downrod ball, and a downrod mounting bracket. If your existing wires are not long enough to go through the tube they will need to be extended with extra pieces of wire.

    • @ceilingfanantlionguykiller2937
      @ceilingfanantlionguykiller2937 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A hugger ceiling fan is a flush mount design that “hugs” the ceiling. A down roded fan is a fan that hangs down off of a down rod (You can also flush mount a down roded ceiling fan.)
