  • Hey guys! Today we settle the debate, does playing Virtual Reality table tennis improve your real life table tennis? In this video we take an absolute beginner at table tennis, and coached her every day for 30 days in VR. We did this 30 day challenge using the table tennis Simulator called ELEVEN Table Tennis on the Quest 2 🏓
    This is a sponsored video with Eleven
    A big thanks to everyone below for helping with this video:

    • @GEKKO_Archery
      @GEKKO_Archery 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@modattersalem5761 First of all you need one of these "paddle adapters" for the controller. This gives you a far better sense of blade alignment because you have something to put your index finger on like in real live. The weight increases to realistic levels (for me 5 grams heavier than my normal paddle, which is more on the light side) and the center of gravity also is shifted to the right place (deep in the handle with controller only).
      Inside the game you can exactly tune each rubber to match your needs, but I have not tinkered with that so far just playing the standard "pro" paddle at the moment.

    This is an awesome idee. I was already wondering if and how much you can improve real life table tennis skills or can even mess them up.
    So would be fun to see the mess up part where someone who can already play relatively decent. Like basic serve and attack stuff. Put him into VR and see if he got better or worse.
    Because in VR you are not depending on your training facilities opening hours and can train whenever you want.
    I really love the idea right now.
    Edit: aaaaannnnnd having a virtual coaching software would be so easy to implement because you already have everything right there. Acceleration data, bat movement and so on. I hope VR tech improves fast. Already waiting to buy one but i am not satisfied with the current models.

    Good job! Just wondering if there was some solo training involved with the Eleven Ball machine or if you kept it to 30-60 minutes a day of one on one training? If the machine wasn't used yet I'd expect results even more crazy than this. For sure once the stroke mechanics are more ingrained and your pupil can start working on footwork. Basically just want to confirm you can improve using VR also at higher levels. Either way very impressive improvement, hope she keeps playing table tennis in any or all dimensions. I keep getting stunned with people's progress training in VR.

    • @TableTennisDaily
      @TableTennisDaily  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah agreed I have been thinking about this a lot. In real life learning a forehand topspin can be challenging. Chloe has somehow learnt the forehand topspin and also most importantly the understanding of brushing the ball to get the shape/arc in the shot all in VR. I think in ELEVEN VR you need to play a topspin ball to keep the ball in play so you naturally have to play that action. So when you come to real life you already have the muscle memory for that moment.
      Question. If I only coached Chloe in real life for 30 days would her forehand topspin be better than what it is now after the 30 VR days? 🤔

    Great video! While I definitely wasn't as green as Chloe when I started ETT, I wasn't very experienced. I would very rarely play with my friends and could sometimes go years without playing and when I did I would just focus on only getting heavy spin on the ball because it was fun. I've had ETT for a bit but didn't really start getting heavily into it until about October of 2022 and I have certainly grown leaps in game and real life and am learning new techniques from experiments as well as the great community in the game. I have not signed up for club play yet but am certainly interested. I have access to a table at work that I play with a co-worker and I definitely see a carry over. I saw someone mention the weight of the ball in another comment and that was probably the same for me as well. I do feel I can swing a little harder in VR and get more out of my paddle than RL, though my paddle is about 13 years old at this point so that doesn't help. I use the SolidSlime adapter and it has worked great for me. Before getting it, my FH worked very well but I had issues adjusting to the angle of my backhand for some reason and was inconsistent. I really enjoy your ETT videos and hope to see many more!

    Dan, you should invest in a new adapter for improved tracking! SolidSlime or Wasyl (if you have money to spend).
    Beginners will undoubtedly improve with ETT, you’ve just proven it!
    Advanced players like yourself - and I’m sure you’ve experienced it - will struggle to translate real-life techniques to ETT like-for-like, and you have to be willing to make some compromises. ETT physics are not 100% accurate (yet), so you need to adjust. What it does help good irl players with is physique and footwork! Some of my matches against other top-20 players are brutal!
    Especially for people with a less-than-optimal technique, ETT can be a confidence booster. In England, I was hardly good enough for British League, while in ETT I’m a regular top 50 player (out of +1 million users)

    Up to wich player level would you say that virtual training can actually help you improve?
    For beginners it obviously helps a lot.
    But how about a player on your level? Would you see a benefit for your own training overall or at least in certain areas?

      Hey Felix great question! Maybe it's something I can try next 👀
      I play both VR and RL, I can adjust between the two easily now. One thing I find VR really helps is decision making. When you play the top guys on ELEVEN you have to be so quick at reading between backhand and forehand. Agreed though would be cool to do it with a advanced player. The only issue is, it will be hard to measure ones improvement if they already have a stable, solid game?

    • @w1nn4h
      @w1nn4h ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your response! :)
      Would love to see a video of you trying out some stuff.
      If I had to come up with something right now (I’ve never tried VR), I’d try to learn a new serve. That could be something you could compare with a before/after sequence. Maybe you can think of a serve you can’t really do consistently now or compare the precision of a serve you can already play to 30 days later after practising it to be more precise in VR.
      Maybe there’s an exercise that you struggle with that you could try out in VR for a while and then try again in real life.
      Cool thing about the decision making aspect, though. Could be an interesting aspect considering reaction times and overall game reading abilities.

    This is absolutely astonishing ....
    I did play Elven Table Tennis for a while when we were not allowed to play Table Tennis indoor but even though I won most matches I got kinda pissed of the headset randomly loosing track of my racket and stuff like that as well as some people doing weird high speed serves I have never seen even half as fast in reality plus not having enough space in my flat to properly move.
    Still the game wasn't to bad and seeing how she improved in that one month is crazy.
    How long did the "train" each day ?
    The Technique isn't really that good especially as you can't correct it in VR not seeing her movements except for the racket but still very good.

      The tracking has improved a lot now, and 120hz has made it feel much more realistic. Have to play with the settings to get it most realistic. Still get some crazy servers, but a lot of good players too, so I usually enjoy playing.

    If a table tennis robot actually had rails to move..... and the table can detect where to ball hits, so a screen connected to the robot on the other side can project another player doing a move that correlates with the spin and speed the robot is launching the ball from your POV do the moves according to where the ball hit, and your racket also detects how hard and what spin you put onto the ball.
    That will definitely improve table tennis.

      @Andrew Grant
      I don't think so. IRL ball hitting the bat is really delicate. Quest controllers vibrate when you hit the ball and it really feels like you hit a ball.
      Main difference for me is that in the game it doesn't matter if you hit ball with center spot of the bat or no. Still simulation is mind blowing and affects real play.

    In my opinion: the game is good for learning the basics, but there are some differences. Like they say here: yes it learns you to play pingpong, but not tabletennis.
    To clarify: Yes you will be able to play a bit of tabletennis, but it is not enough to start playing competition.
    with the play ingame, if you do the same moves IRL, you will or play the ball in the net, or to return it, but return it that high, that your adversary can easily attack on it.
    Also Spin is treated in another way ingame than IRL, not to forget the wide variety of rubbers
